I n the Middle Ages, the sparsely populated lands east of the Polish kingdom were a constant bone of contention for the governments of Poland, Russia, and Turkey and, therefore, the cause of numerous wars. The lands u kraju, at the eastern edge of Poland, could be compared with the Wild West of the American colonies. Mostly out of reach of the institutions of law and order, this was a place of refuge for those in trouble with the powers that be and their laws. From u kraju the name of these lands became known as Ukraine.
