    About the Author

To my mother for being there when I needed her most, I will never be finished loving you.

And also to one of my best friends, NaKeysha Rose. I will always love you. You are still a huge inspiration in my life, you will always be in my mind and heart.

Special thanks to my biggest supporters: my brother, Karl Jr., and sister, Apral, family and friends who believed in me and helped me get my feet planted firmly on the ground!

    PREFACE

As seventeen-year-old high school valedictorian, Desiree, approached the podium to give her words of encouragement and goodbye speech to her fellow classmates and school faculty, a tear of joy fell down her cheek. She wiped it away before she turned into the spotlight and began her speech:

I would like to begin by saying thank you to our teachers, other faculty and staff members, and especially to the school principal for putting up with us. I know we were quite a handful at times. But today we say goodbye as students and hello as alumni of Coral Reef Sr. High School in Miami, Florida. Go Barracudas! To my classmates and future graduates, remember this is only the beginning of our lives as adults, and we have the support of our family, friends, and one another as this chapter in our lives comes to a close. It’s up to each and every one of you to write the next chapter of your life and make your story into whatever you want it to be. But remember one thing: Once a Barracuda, always a Barracuda! I loved every moment here and wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. To my parents, I love you for being supportive and always being there for me. And finally, to the senior class of Coral Reef Sr. High School, congratulations graduates!

Desiree left Miami the following fall to attend college at UCLA for her bachelor’s degree in psychology. She wanted to continue on to her PhD afterward and start her own practice. Her best friends, Ronald and Jamika, chose to stay in Miami but promised to visit her often. Her parents, Marie and Caleb, were sad to see her go so far away from home, but they believed she could do whatever she set her mind to and they were very proud of her.

Desiree began her freshman year and made quite a few new friends. One night they went to a jazz club to relieve the stress of their first few weeks at college. She was enjoying herself and completely oblivious to having an admirer until her friend pointed him out an hour later. She danced another half hour before going to get a bottle of water from the bar. Her admirer offered to pay for her drink. She smiled but politely turned him down. He touched her hand just as she turned to go back to her friends’ table and asked how her night was. She looked to her friends who encouraged her to stay and she sat at the bar next to him. He was very handsome and seemed like he was a lot older than her. He asked if they could continue their conversation somewhere more private. She was hesitant at first but agreed when he said he wanted to take her to get something to eat. She waved goodbye to her friends and they walked down to an all-night café.

My name is James, by the way, he said, extending his hand, smiling at her.

I’m Desiree, she said, shaking his hand and blushing at how handsome he was.

I’m glad we got away from the crowd so I won’t have to keep struggling to hear your beautiful voice.

Desiree blushed and didn’t know what else to say. She tried to hide her face with her hands.

Don’t hide your beauty from me, gorgeous. James said after grabbing one of her hands and moving them away from her face.

She giggled and tried to not feel as shy as he made her feel. After they received their drinks, she began to calm down and they talked for what seemed like hours.

So, James, what do you do?

I’m an entrepreneur. I have a barber shop on the strip next to the campus.

Oh, that sounds exciting. I hope I can own my own business one day. I’m taking psychology courses at UCLA.

Really? That’s very interesting. Are you going to try and shrink me? he laughed.

Only if you want me to. Desiree laughed back.

They continued through their late-night dinner until Desiree thought it was time for her to get back to her dorm since she had class in a few hours. James offered to walk her back to her dorm since it wasn’t too far from the café, and she accepted with a blushing face. She tried to continue their conversation as he escorted her back to her dorm.

What has you out this late? You don’t have a wife waiting up for you or nothing like that? I can’t imagine you’re single, she inquired.

Well… James laughed. Actually, I am single. Never been married, no kids. I guess, for now, I’m not really looking to settle down. I’m just trying to make sure my business takes off, you know?

Yeah, that’s understandable. Desiree said as she nodded in agreement. So what made you want to talk to me?

Hmm, I don’t know. I arrived at the club thirty minutes before you and your friends walked in and when I saw you, I just couldn’t bring myself to let you get away before I could at least get your name, he said smiling, and when they made it to her dorm, he asked, Can I at least have a good-night hug and/or kiss?

Desiree laughed and agreed to the hug. She found herself entranced with the cologne he was wearing and didn’t want to stop hugging him, her head on his shoulder. He was almost a foot taller than her. He had a perfect smile, a dark complexion and seemed to be one of the sweetest guys you would ever come across. As he loosened his embrace, they looked into each other’s eyes, and Desiree blushed before pulling away and heading for the door. He caught her hand and brought her back into his arms and he kissed her forehead, making her weak in the knees. She stumbled through the door giggling, and once she made it in, she waved at him, he waved back, and she watched him walk away before heading up to her room. She couldn’t believe how much she wanted him even though they had just met, and she stomped her foot when she realized she didn’t give him her number so he could call her.

Two days passed before she saw him again. She was studying at an off-campus coffee shop. When he walked in and saw her, he immediately went over to say hello.

Desiree, how have you been, gorgeous? I’ve been thinking about you, wondering if I would ever see you again, he said, giving her a tight hug.

James, how nice to see you again. She smiled. I was just getting some studying done. What are your plans for the day?

Well, now that I have you, my schedule is open to whatever you want to do.

Wow, I guess, when you’re the owner, you can set your own schedule, huh? She laughed.

She asked if he would give her a few moments to finish her studying and then they could go for a walk. They spent the rest of the day together and shared a dinner before exchanging numbers when they made it back to Desiree’s dorm room.

A month went by before he officially asked her to be his woman. Desiree was surprised, considering he was much older than her, but she accepted, and they made love for the first time. James became not only her first love but also her first lover. He was very gentle with her and helped her explore her body, teaching her how to also please him. She enjoyed every minute of it and she never wanted the night to end. The months flew by and the holidays approached. Desiree asked James about his plans.
