    INTRODUCTION

This book is the result of the desire to compile all the information I have gathered over the past years while raising three kids. The purpose is to provide a reference guide for my children and others. The information presented comes from many sources such as books, retreats, and radio broadcasts. I want to thank God for always being there and helping me to live and not just survive and, for modeling what it is to be the ultimate Father.

    CHAPTER 1

    Be a Man

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8 NASB)

I can remember when I was a boy the popular phrase of Be a man. What does that mean? What being a man is according to cultural standards has changed throughout time. Men were originally defined by the set skills they possessed. Early man had to be a hunter in order to survive. This trait of being the provider has continued until recently. The other early idea was man as the protector. Other aspects of these two things eventually expanded into the manhood being about power, dominance, and stoicism. In my day to be a man meant being athletic, wealthy, or popular with the ladies. Once again, the perception of manhood has changed. The early traits associated with manhood are now considered negative by today’s cultural standards.
