Fred’s Gift - Damian Barrett
ONE
8/9/2006
Sandy Baine is a bit of a surfy girl, she even looks like a surfy girl. She has long sun bleached blonde hair, tanned skin, and an easy going nature. Sandy lives on the far north coast of New South Wales, in a small town called Byron Bay. She is 34 years old and lives with a girlfriend named Vicky who is a waitress in one of the more up market hotels in Byron Bay.
Sandy works in a small pizza shop starting at 4pm each evening seven days a week, this means she has most of the day free to do as she pleases. She also sees herself as a bit of a song writer, nothing pleases her more than to play her guitar and sing and write songs sitting on her verandah looking out over the headland of Australia’s most easterly point. Actually she has even written a song about Byron Bay being the first part of Australia to see the sun each morning.
Sandy is about to have the most amazing day of her young life, she doesn’t know this yet of cause, but what is about to happen to her will not only change her life forever, but will also change the entire world forever.
This very special day doesn’t start out so special for Sandy, to her it just seems like any other morning. She rose early from bed as usual, brushed her teeth, made a cuppa and went outside onto the front balcony to have a look at the surf, which is just across the road from where she lives. She has always loved the early mornings, the freshness, the stillness of the water, but it’s the peace it gives her in the mornings that really appeals to her.
She decided on some cereal for breakfast and sat down at the kitchen table, just as she took her first mouthful, a very beautiful women suddenly appeared as if by magic right in front of her. To say she got the fright of her life was an understatement, not only because of the women’s sudden appearance, but because Sandy had never quite seen a women like this before. She was not only the most beautiful women Sandy had ever seen, but because she was probably the most beautiful women anyone has ever seen.
Anyone from this planet!
Sandy knew straight away that this woman wasn’t from Earth, but she wasn’t scared, the women had gentle features, and such a beautiful warm smile. Sandy was shocked and amazed, but who wouldn’t be? Just one look at this beautiful woman and you knew that she was not only from another world, but she was friendly. She had the most amazingly beautiful light coloured blue skin, but it was her smile that made you feel you had nothing to fear.
Hello Sandy.
says the woman in a lovely voice. I know you’re wondering this can’t be happening, but everything is ok, I just want to be your friend. My name is Cree and I just want to talk to you.
Where do you come from?
Sandy’s trying not to panic, she kind of knows this -––women means her no harm, but come on, she looks like an Alien.
"I am an Alien. I come from a planet called Orin."
Where’s that?
It’s a very long way from here Sandy, but I can travel there very quickly.
says Cree trying to reassure her. Please, all I want to be is your friend
Cree is smiling. I have been with you for quite a while now, actually I know everything about you.
But how?
Sandy’s still having trouble with all of this. Is she going mad, or is this really happening?
Well, as I know you very well now, and I can be sure that you won’t be too upset if I tell you that I’ve been traveling inside your mind with you for quite a while.
What?
Don’t worry Sandy, this is a good thing.
says Cree smiling.
She has such a nice way about her thinks Sandy, I feel I can trust her, if she wanted to hurt me she would have done it by now.
That’s right.
says Cree.
Ok, this is a little weird someone who can read my mind, hang on, can you read my mind?
Yes, but I love your mind, you think such lovely thoughts.
I do?
Yes, you are a beautiful person Sandy.
Thank you. But I’m still very confused, I mean, what do you want with me?
I would like you to help me and also my people. I have come to meet with you because with you and others of your kind, you can help us to evolve to become what we are now.
What do you mean?
With your help my people can become more aware.
Aware of what?
Over the next thousands of years, my people, and also people of other worlds will evolve to a stage where we will open our minds completely. At this stage in human evolution you use 10% of your mind, at this stage in my world’s evolution we use 100% of our mind.
"And how am I supposed to help you achieve something as enormous as all that? I am totally primitive compared to you." Sandy is nervous, who wouldn’t be?
There is a gene in your brain that can be transferred to a child, however it can’t be just any child, the child must be Fathered by a man named Chris Barrington.
explains Cree.
What?
Sandy is totally amazed by all of this. It’s the most incredible story she’s ever heard and it sounds like she has the starring role.
He is a nice man who has the opposite gene in his brain to yours. However, when the two genes are passed onto your child together, a new gene mutates to form a very unique one.
So you want me to have child with a man I don’t even know?
Yes.
How can you ask me to do that?
Because Sandy, this is to help to create a whole new species for my people. With yours and others help, my people evolve to a point where they can time travel by just using their mind, to travel to different worlds all over the galaxy to help other worlds. Help to create new populations on other planets, to help create a better and more advanced universe. There are other things we can do also, not just mind travel, you would be helping millions of people in the future on different worlds just by this one gift by you and others of your kind.
explains Cree.
You already know my answer don’t you?
Yes.
If I said no, you wouldn’t be here.
There are 30 human people involved to help create.
And if one of us says no?
None of you do, I’m from the future remember?
says Cree giggling. I already know what’s going to happen.
Sandy thinks to herself When I see her standing there with her lovely bluish skin, how can I not believe her? Normally I would want some proof but the way she just appeared right in front of my eyes like that? -—-Wow.
Any questions?
So I have to have a baby with this man?
Yes.
Does he know about all of this?
Not yet, he will find out soon, and he does agree.
So, I’m going to be a Mother?
Yes.
Wow.
There is one problem though Sandy.
This sounds serious.
Yes, I am afraid we will have to take the baby to live on another world.
Cree can sense her distress, the maternal instinct of human Mothers is wonderful, thinks Cree. Sandy hasn’t even had the baby and already she is concerned about its welfare. Cree can also sense she is trying not to show just how distressed she really is.
So will I have any contact with my baby in the future?
That is up to you, we can arrange it if you wish.
How? You mean I would travel to another world? Or would you bring the baby here?
Whichever you prefer.
says Cree.
You could take me to another world if I wished? How?
There two ways for you to travel, the first way is only your mind will travel, the second way is mind and body.
I am going to have to think about all of this. I know you know the answer already, but I need to make up my own mind. I’ve already agreed to the baby, but going to different worlds? I’m a small town girl.
This is your decision Sandy.
All this has happened so fast, I’m a Mother and going to other worlds? Not your most average of mornings.
says the totally exasperated Sandy.
Cree put her head on Sandy’s, a gentle touch and she gave her a sweet little smile. How could she say no to Cree’s request? To be able to help so many people on so many worlds? Wow! But was she sure she could trust Cree? I mean I’ve only just met her, how can I be sure she’s not lying? These thoughts are ascending through her mind when Cree asks,
Is there anything I can do for you Sandy?
Just then Sandy remembers she can read her mind.
"It is true, I can read your mind, but I’m not here to trick you. On my world our species has evolved far past the point where we lie and deceive, we all love one another. There are no jealousies or conflict or even bad thoughts about anyone, if you love someone, how can you hurt them?"
But how can you love everyone? Even people you’ve only just met?
Because they love me!
Sandy thought about this for a moment and thought about how wonderful it would be if everybody was like that on Earth. Imagine just walking down the street and everybody loves you? There would be so much more happiness in the world, if I can help to create this on another world, then I’d have fifty babies. What a wonderful gift to be able to give. If Cree has traveled back in time, then that means people are already living a peaceful happy life which I has helped to create, thinks Sandy.
"Sandy, there is something I would like to do for you. As I’ve already told you I know everything about you, so I know about your Father. I know about how sick he was and how he died and I also know about how much you loved him and how you still think of him everyday. Also about how you and your Mother nursed him until the end, I can’t change the past like I can alter the future, but I can take you back to your past, back to see your Father and to maybe hold his hand and tell him how much you love him."
Really? You know that is my life’s wish. Yes, I’d love to see him again, he was such a wonderful man and he really loved us, all of us.
Sandy’s Father Fred died from emphysema, he was only 48 years old when he got sick, and he died when he was 56. Sandy has both a Brother and Sister but they were both married with children and living away while Fred was sick. So it was up to her and her Mother to look after Fred and tend to him while he was ill, right up until the end until Fred died.
It was tough!
Seeing someone you love so much suffering and not really be able to do anything to help ease their pain was terrible for Sandy and her Mother. No one should have to suffer the way her Father did, he was such a good man.
At the time, she couldn’t stand to see poor old Fred suffer any more, gasping for breath, living on oxygen bottles, totally bed ridden except for emergency ambulance trips to the hospital. But poor old Fred continued to suffer, he lasted another two years. The doctors said it was because he had such a strong heart, people have heart attacks everyday and die, isn’t it ironic? I bet he wished he didn’t have such a strong heart, and others would just love to have a heart as strong as Fred’s.
After her Father died, she had a long talk with her Mother and said she was moving away to Cresant Head. Her Mum understood, that house just had too much sickness. Her Mum ended up moving to the Entrance, and that’s where Sandy’s Mum’s new life really began. She was only 50 when her husband died, and she moved away when she was 51. Sandy helped her with the move, and they both shed a tear for the beautiful Fred.
It had always been Sandy’s dream to see her Father again, I suppose she’s not alone in this dream and we all want to see our loved ones again after they’ve gone. She was only 12 when he got sick, but after all these years, she still has such great memories of him, his corny jokes, and when you were sick he would devote all his attention to you.
Family!
That’s all Fred wanted, family. He was always well liked, people were always asking him to go out but he just wanted to stay at home with his family. People adored Fred, and he liked them too, but he just wanted to be with his beloved family.
So when Cree offered to take her back to see the beautiful Fred again, how could she say no? Just to hold his hand again?
Wonderful!
Cree, if we go back together, before my Father started smoking and we prove to him through your abilities that if he smokes he will die, we can prevent him from suffering such a long and painful illness, also the terrible years ahead for my Mother.
Sandy, as much as I would like to grant you this we can’t, if there was anyway to be able to help you we would, but we can’t prevent your Father from smoking.
Why not?
Because it is the main chemical in your Father’s body when you are conceived that helps you to achieve the gene which will later help so many others!
You mean nicotine?
Yes.
"Incredible. Nicotine kills millions of people on this world, but it will help through some special gene passed onto someone who smokes, to create millions of better people on other worlds? Wouldn’t the tobacco companies just love to get their greedy little hands on this little bit of information?"
Yes, I know it is ironic.
What a cruel joke, she thinks. For a minute there, she thought Cree might be able to help her Father, she was really starting to get her hopes up. Imagine being able to save your Father from dying? How many times she had wished her Father had never started smoking, how many times she had wished he were still here, healthy, with her Mum and Dad living happily ever after.
But still, this is a great gift. At least I can go and see him again. How many people get an opportunity like this? I am going to try and remember every second of it, really enjoy it, relish it, soak up being with my Father again.
So how do we do this Cree?
I think it is best if just your mind travels and enters your younger self.
And where will my younger mind go?
Asleep.
explains Cree.
OK.
Is there any special day you would prefer?
asks Cree.
No specific day, just any time in my 12th year.
Sandy can’t believe all this is happening, here she was just about to have breakfast, and a beautiful Alien appears and is going to take her back to see her long deceased Father. All of this in just a few short minutes, it’s just incredible. But it’s Cree herself who is the most incredible, a woman from another world, she can’t stop looking at her with total amazement, and this woman is standing in the kitchen talking to her? She can’t believe its happening.
It’s so incredible, and also just wonderful.
Imagine going back to see someone who you love dearly and miss every day? Back to a time when they are healthy and happy, back to a time when they are actually alive.
Amazing!
Would you like to travel now Sandy?
Yes please, I can’t wait to see him again. -—and Cree?
Yes?
Thank you.
"I wish I could do more to help your Father Sandy, I loved him also, I love your Mother as well and they are both very special people. You were
