    What is Thanksgiving?

    Thanksgiving is described in the dictionary as the giving of gratitude, especially towards God. Many Scriptures in the Bible command us to give thanks to God. Thanksgiving is appreciating the giver. Thanksgiving is honoring God. God said that those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me in Psalm 50:23. It’s a sign that you trust God. Thanksgiving is the recognition that God is in charge of your life. All nations of the world need to recognize the LORD; they need to recognize that the LORD is glorious and strong (see Psalm 96:7 NLT). It is total and complete dependency on God. David said that he wants to depend on God alone because his salvation and honor depend on God; he put his hope in him. Thanksgiving is recognizing that without God we can do nothing. Jesus said in John 15:5 that without Him we can do nothing. It is the acknowledgment that we are nothing without God. Apostle Paul said that he is what he is by the grace of God in 1 Corinthians 15:10. Thanksgiving is the doorway to your blessings. It is ascribing all the glory to God for where we are (Ascribe to the LORD the glory due to his name 1 Chronicles 16:29). It is the act of being grateful for what God has done. We know that the LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. It is being grateful for the benefits we have received, for the favors that He has bestowed upon us (Praise the LORD, and forget not all His benefits, Psalm 103:2). Thanksgiving is a force that attracts good to you. The Psalmist said that it is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD in Psalm 92 verse 1. Thanksgiving is capable of delivering miracles to thanks givers. It is acknowledging only God can do the miracles we experience in life […You are the God who performs miracles (Psalm 76:14)]. It is giving all the credit to God for all the happenings in our lives. It is giving Him all the credit for keeping us alive. Thanksgiving is a necessity as food is a necessity for your body. It is appreciating God for all His blessings. It is recounting the past acts of God (I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds. Psalm 77:11-12). It is an act of humility. Thanksgiving is God’s will for us according to 1 Thessalonians 5:18; Apostle Paul said to give thanks in all circumstances. Thanksgiving is a spiritual weapon (As they began to sing and praise, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated. 2 Chronicles 20:22). It is an invincible weapon against satan. It is one of the best ways to torment satan and his mother-in-law as Bishop Tudor Bismack usually says. Thanksgiving is a lifetime debt we owe to God. It reminds us of what we have and the blessings we have received from God. Thanksgiving is the protocol to enter God’s house. The Psalmist said to enter into His gates with thanksgiving in Psalm 100:1 and to come before him with thanksgiving and to worship him with music and song in Psalm 95:2.

    Thanksgiving is simply an expression of gratitude. It’s so simple that people don’t pay too much attention to it. Sometimes the little things we ignore the most would have affected our life tremendously in a positive way if we had put them into practice. I believe saying thank you is one of them. Being thankful draws blessings to the thanks giver. There is a revelation in being thankful. Anything you are doing for God requires a revelation. I believe thanksgiving is a revelation as well. Why something so simple is so neglected? Most people don’t know how much power that contains in these two little words ‘thank you.’ Jesus uses them in several occasions while He was on earth. And every time He used them something great happens. The greatest miracle that happens after Jesus gave thanks, in my opinion, happened at the tomb of Lazarus. After He gave thanks, He cries out with a loud voice Lazarus, come forth! We should follow that same pattern. When you’re facing a difficult situation, after giving thanks to God, cry out with a loud voice to the problem and tell it to go. You can say something like sickness, go! or pain, go! Just name the difficulty and tell it to go. That’s what Jesus did. He is our role model. We should do exactly what He did when He came down to earth over two thousand years ago. It might seem illogical but it won’t hurt if you try it. Everything God does looks illogical. God doesn’t use logic to perform His miracles because He’s not a natural man. God is a spirit being. Logic is of the flesh. For those of you who study the Bible, you would agree with that. Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 1:27 that God chose the foolish things of the world to shame those who think they are wise and he chose the weak things of the world to shame those who think they are strong. Therefore, don’t be surprised if I tell you to give thanks first and speak to your mountain of any kind. I like a statement that Dr. Mike Murdock made often. He said that all God does is speak. He added that God loves to speak so much that He calls Himself ‘The Word’ (see John 1:1). The proof is in Genesis chapters one and two. Go ahead and read them. All over the chapters it’s ‘and God said’…’and God said’. In addition, in Psalm 33 verse 6 the psalmist says that by the Word of the LORD the heavens were made; and in verse 9 he says He spoke and it was done, He commanded and it came into existence. I understand perfectly why Dr. Murdock made that statement.

    Examples of Thanksgiving Prayers in the Bible

    David’s Prayer of Thanksgiving

    David praised the LORD in the presence of the whole assembly, saying,

    "Praise be to You, LORD, the God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is Yours. Yours, LORD, is the kingdom; You are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honor come from you; You are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give You thanks, and praise Your glorious name.

    I Chronicles 29:10-13 NIV

    Daniel’s Prayer of Thanksgiving

    Daniel 2

    19. During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision.

    Then Daniel praised the God of heaven

    20. and said:

    "Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;

    wisdom and power are his.

    21. He changes times and seasons;

    He deposes kings and raises up others.

    He gives wisdom to the wise and

    knowledge to the discerning.

    22. He reveals deep and hidden things;

    He knows what lies in darkness,

    And light dwells with him.

    23. I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors;

    You have given me wisdom and power,

    You have made known to me

    What we asked of you,

    You have made known to us the dream of the king."

    Jesus’ Prayers of Thanksgiving

    1. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples and the
