WHAT IS THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD?

The New King James Version (NKJV) of Acts 3:19 tells us this about the presence of the Lord:

Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.

Before we discuss what it is, let’s talk about what it isn’t. The presence of the Lord is not some scary, spooky feeling. It is not some dark cloud that comes out of the sky. It is not human reasoning, thoughts, ideas, or traditions. No human can duplicate it. It cannot be forced on people; it can only be obtained from God almighty. He is the original architect.

It is an original and authentic presence. The presence of God is not a human thing; rather, it is a God thing. It is God’s super on our natural. It is fresh, revitalizing, renewing, and joyful. The above scripture truly describes it as refreshing. The first part of the scripture says to repent, to turn around and return to God.

His presence is about to invade your life. That means you must change your way of doing things.

Let’s take a closer look at Acts 3:19. The Amplified Bible (AB) really clarifies the meaning of this verse:

So repent (change your mind and purpose); turn around and return (to God), that your sins may be erased (blotted out, wiped clean), that time of refreshing (of recovering from the effects of heat, of reviving with fresh air) may come from the presence of the Lord.

The presence of God is supernatural. This is a truly amazing concept, to say the least. It is God’s supernatural power pouring upon human flesh. It is God’s power working on humans, enabling us to achieve greater results than we would be able to do on our own—that is, with our natural abilities and without his supernatural power.

The God of the universe—that awesome being who spoke the world into existence and can destroy mankind if He chooses to do so—makes His power accessible to each of us. Really? Divine power is obtainable and achievable? How?

Through Him. He has given you and me the opportunity to walk into His throne room, into fellowship with Him. Fellowship with God is truly a great experience. Any of His children can experience His throne room through fellowship with Him.

Yes, you can experience that thrilling and overwhelming joy simply by being in fellowship with Him. And, yes, you receive this great outpouring of joy just by spending time with God and fellowshipping with Him. Just as Adam and Eve did in the beginning, before sin occurred.

However, once they fell into sin, they no longer enjoyed close intimacy with Him. In fact, they were cast out of Eden, out of the presence of God. Sin causes everything to change. It was not that He did not know where Adam was; it was simply that the sin Adam and Eve committed changed the whole dynamic of their relationship with God.

Stay away from sin, and then you will experience the glory of God in a greater way. Keep sin out, and keep the presence in.

As we read in Genesis 3:8–10 out of the Amplified Bible (AB):

And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the
