It was five past nine. The whole family was present at the dining table. Greta was lost in thoughts in such a manner that seemed she was tackling a grave problem. Her mother was extremely worried about her daughter. She sensed that her daughter had a serious problem. The other members were busy taking meals.

Greta, the mother broke her silence.

Greta realizing her situation spoke, Yes, mom. I beg your pardon.

Striking the spoon in the centre of the rice plate she uttered, Mom, I am O.K. The very next moment, coming face to face with reality she set about eating hurriedly. Seeing her behaviour her mother was in a fix.

I am fed up of this girl, the grandma cried out, All girls are impressive and clever. But Greta! Oh no! I see that wisdom is one factor but life is not a shop of wisdom only.

But I have the ability. Greta felt as if her inner voice was giving out a scream of pain and distress. It seemed to her as if inner conscience was exhorting her.

Greta was deeply immersed in her thoughts. All of a sudden her mother spoke out, Greta,if you have done taking your meals then go to bed.

The very next moment Greta was sobbing inside the room as if wailing. But her wailing was quiet so that none might overhear it. But why? Maybe silence was large writ on her face. It seemed as if it was a part and parcel of her nature. She herself did not know what pricked her a lot. She was unable to understand why she was in such dire straits.

Keeping quiet had become her second nature. Greta sitting on her bed was weeping when she realized someone was present in the room. She looked down under the bed, searched the almirah and looked behind in the table. She rummaged through the entire room.

    Then

Hiss! Hiss! There was a sound. Greta listened to it carefully. A snake was hissing. Greta woke up fearfully. She thought that the sound was coming from behind the curtain. But it was strange that she did not yell. Nor she called out to somebody else in the family for help. She promptly drew all the curtains of the windows and the doors to one side. But there was nothing. Greta wanted to feel sure there was no snake in the room. But one thing was sure. She heard the hissing of a snake. She looked at the broken glass of a window. She began to look out of the window. Maybe the creature slithered out of the window. As the garden was well lit, she could see it clearly. The garden started from the cemented belt in the backyard of the house. As it was the summer season the vegetables like squash, bottlegourd, ladies fingers were in bloom. The trees of mangoes and jamuns were laden with these fruits. There was a big hollow in the mango tree. In the twinkling of an eye she thought that the snake might slither inside the hollow. The next moment she felt a sound had come from the gutter in the garden. Next moment she thought that the snake might be in the gutter.

Greta returned to her room and took out a torch from the almirah. Thereafter, she moved towards the garden. With the help of the torch she searched for the snake at every possible place. She further thought, "Maybe it clings to a jasmine creeper as a snake feels attracted towards a jasmine creeper.’’

After a thorough search for a long time she returned to her room.

She bolted the door from inside. Greta’s room was at a different position in comparison to other rooms of the house. So, no member of the family could come to learn that she had gone out in the garden in the dead of the night. The very next moment, she was in bed and switched off the button near the bed. Now there was complete darkness in the whole room.

But before falling asleep she was overwhelmed with fear. She switched on the button and the whole room became well lit. She again searched the entire room. On finding nothing she muttered, "It is my doubt;it is my suspicion; I must now sleep. In a few moments she embraced sleep, without being aware of it. It was stark dark. The night was giving a feeling of awfulness. It was 12o’clock at night. All of a sudden, she grew terrified and opened her eyes. She felt a hiss. While lying on bed she kept on looking at the ceiling. Then the entire room was lit with red light.

Oh! This red light! She moved to the right of the bed. There was a big snake outstretched in the room. Seeing the snake she thought it wise to stay on the bed. She kept on looking at the snake fearfully without blinking her eyes. Soon she fell fast asleep as if under the influence of intoxication.

Next morning when she woke up,she heard the singing of hymns in the nearby temple. It was a pleasant feeling. All of a sudden, she moved to the right of the bed but there was no snake at all. She heaved a sigh of relief. Greta opened the door and came out tying her hair. Her younger brother was sitting on the floor. He yelled out saying,I have seen the snake in the garden,Greta. It crossed through the gutter in the backyard.

Greta felt alarmed. But tackling the situation she said, Nothing to worry. I have seen many such snakes. She was just asking the colour of the snake. She did not reveal her fear.

She had no faith in serpents. When she had no faith in serpents how could she worship them in the form of gods and goddesses?

It was beyond her faith that her mother would worship mother serpent. Greta had a firm view that it was the outcome of mother’s superstition. But Greta did not feel that it was the opportune time for her to talk to her mother about the mother serpent. Greta was a bit of a hesitant girl.

Greta was studying in the first year of M.A. She would go to college daily. Her friendship was limited to three girls only. Deepika was a Brahmin, Baby was a Sikh, Shina was a Muslim and the fourth was Greta herself. It was a unique example of unity in diversity. All the three girls had much closeness with Greta. Baby’s house was hardly at a stone’s throw from Greta’s. Deepika and Shina stayed in a house in Roorkee University. When Greta and Baby would go out on their bicycles, they had little conversation between them. It was Baby who would open up the conversation. One thing Baby would repeat time and again, I would like your company very much. Greta, I love to cycle with you. Even your silence is blissful. Your silence never irritated me, Greta. But Greta did not say anything. Today also both Baby and Greta were going on their bicycles. They had no conversation while cycling. Greta was lost in deep thoughts. Maybe she was worried about the last night’s incident. When they reached college, they saw Shina and Deepika coming. All of them shook hands with one another. Baby and Greta while talking to them reached the cycle- stand and parked their cycles there. The conversation among them opened up and all the four friends moved towards their classroom. While conversing the three friends felt that Greta was somewhat worried. But all the three did not ask anything in this regard.

Suddenly the bell rang. The first period was of English poetry. Now the four friends had taken their respective seats. Even in the classroom,Greta was silent and lost in deep thoughts. The professor walked into the room and began to deliver a lecture. Greta was not asking the question related to the professor’s lecture, which she would generally do. Avoiding the direct eye-contact with the professor Shina was looking at the face of Greta.

Maybe she was trying to read Greta’s face. Shina looked at the hands of Greta. Her hands were trembling There was no denying the fact that she was not listening to the professor’s lecture. Perhaps she was listening but not with single - pointed concentration. All of a sudden, the professor’s attention was drawn towards Greta. He felt that Greta was not listening to his lecture with rapt attention.

Pointing at Greta the professor with full confidence said to her, Greta, narrate the gist of the lecture which I have just delivered. Greta stood in strange manner and found herself non- plussed. Now she felt that she was not listening to the lecture with alacrity. She could not narrate anything to the professor who out of anger ordered Greta to get out of the classroom. Greta had no alternative but to leave the classroom. She came out of the classroom and sat on the grassy field in one corner of the college. She thought,’This has never happened before. I always remain closely attentiveTo date,I have always got my doubts cleared as regards the lecture delivered by the professor. But today, Iwas unable to narrate the gist even.’

She further pondered over it,’What is that has disturbed my concentration? Maybe it is because of last night’s incident. But that is the other side of the coin.’ Greta herself was unable to clear out doubts which had cropped up. Meanwhile the first hour had elapsed. There was no other period now. As soon as the bell rang, Shina, Deepika and Baby came out of the class. It seemed as if their eyes had been searching for Greta. They found Greta lost in deep thoughts on the grassy field. Shina showered a volley of questions on Greta after she had met Greta. Greta, what happened to you; what troubles you? Why did you not narrate the gist? Are you all right?

Greta spoke out thus, I do not know why I was not listening to the professor with alacrity. Baby was thinking the other way round. She muttered, Maybe it is due to the bad influence of evil spirits. Shut you mouth, Baby Shina said to
