The Sapphire Academy ( Sydney Marin, Book 1) - Katherine Petrova

In New Orleans, there are no mythical creatures existed. There are no paranormal things at all. Can you believe it? What if the paranormal creatures are living in another realm that is totally invisible to humans? That’s possible, right?

There’s a street in New Orleans that absolutely looks like an entrance to a large forest. That’s where a realm is hidden. Only paranormal creatures can enter it with a secret portal. Humans will just pass the road and reach their homes without even knowing about a place like that.

We should Break-up. You are driving me crazy. I hate you, a teenage girl scolded in her phone passing the road. She hangs up on her boyfriend before he had time to explain anything to her. She glanced at her watch. The whole place feels weird to her. She couldn’t spot any person. She kept on walking as fast as she can. She’s hoping to reach her home. But it seems like she’s walking for hours. The darkness, wind, silence gave her goosebumps. She’s the one person who’s standing on a road alone.

When she finally spotted the street board, the name feels different. It says Slateville. A street like that doesn’t even exist. She looks around everywhere to find nothing. She regretted dumping her boyfriend. Now, who will take her home? She fumbled to take her phone and call her brother. When she concentrated on searching his number, there’s a silent whisper ringing in her ear.

Who’s that? she bravely asked, with lots of fear inside her and trembling legs. She looked again at the board. Some words appeared right before her eyes below the word Slateville

Beware of this town, written in blood.

‘Is it really blood?’ she gasped and dropped her phone? ‘Oh god, I want to go home’ she thought to herself

Well, there’s no possibility for that, says someone behind her. She turned with her mouth opened wide to see a boy standing five feet away from her. How come she didn’t see him before while she’s standing there for more than an hour.

     Who are you?

That’s not important. You saw too much. He smirked. She can’t even able to see his face clearly in the dark. When he moved closer to her, she can see something she never imagined.

    Fangs.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh, her scream echoed all over the place but no one can hear her. Well, no humans can hear her. She fell into darkness and everything went blank. She’s in Stateville where everything excited.

Vampires, werewolves, witches, warlocks, demons, banshee, etc.... no human is supposed to see that.

    CHAPTER-01

    Sydney Marin

"Hear these words, hear my cry,

    spirit from the other side,

come to me I summon thee"

I chanted these lines at full concentration. I already placed Five candles in the middle of the forest. It’s going to be midnight and I can’t able to figure out how to use this spell perfectly to bring back my dead parent’s spirit. I even placed both of their photos in the middle of the candles.

Why can’t I do this spell? I’m good at everything than this, I shouted in irritation. I’m a very good witch in my sixteen years. I will turn sixteen in one week and all of my life I never left my house. I don’t have any memories of my parents. They died when I’m three. Now I’m with my Aunt Lydia. She always tells one thing Never leave our house and you shouldn’t talk with others. I’m telling you this to protect you. That’s your parent’s wish, Bla Bla blah... I mimicked her in my mind.

I’m not a kid. I don’t need protection. I want to explore my realm in Slateville city. I want to take with other witches my age. I even want to know about vampires, werewolves, and make some friends, which I’m not allowed to do. In my whole life, it’s only me and my aunt.

I walked over to a tree and sat down, turning off my torch. The candle lights in enough for me, I’m not afraid of the dark. The silence never haunted me. I kept my hands on my head, which is hurting like hell whenever I tried this spell.

It hurts me I never got to see my parents. My aunt loves me and cares for me even though she acted harshly sometimes. But I want my parents. I think I will stay here near the tree than going back to my home. She will be angry because I left the house. She doesn’t know I stole her powerful spell book to summon my parent’s spells. I crawled a little to get the Spell book. It’s big and has more black magic inside it. I’m so eager to try it all. What am I going to do by being alone every day than trying some spells?

Suddenly the wind is getting stronger, the fire in the candle is all blown away. I heard some silent whispering.

Is anybody here? I shouted, turning on the torch and looking around everywhere. But the whisper got louder. When I concentrated on it harder, I can hear my name over and over.

I closed my ears as the whispers turned into a shrieking noise. I don’t know why am I hearing my name continuously. Something’s wrong. I got to reach my home. I left all the candles there, kept my parent’s photo in my jeans pocket. I’m wearing my blue T-shirt and jeans and with the large Spell book, a torch on the other hand. When I started running, the shrieking voice follows me behind. My black hair is blown and messed up in this strong wind. Some trees around me started falling. I make my way through this wind as fast as I can. Soon, on my way, a tree is about to fall. I dropped the torch and raised my hand right in the tree's direction. A bright blue light flashed right from my palm. The tree got broken in two parts, fallen on the other side. Finally, I can see my house at the end of the forest. I stopped breathlessly at the backside of my house. Even my two-floor home looks haunted right now.

The noise stopped once I’m near my house. Now you can’t reach me, I smirked, knowing my aunt used spells to block any spirits from coming here. I don’t know why she did it, but it’s really useful right now. I surely know the spirits who are calling me are not my parents. I can feel it by hearing the creepy voices. I tried to summon my parents, not in any evil spirits. I must have messed it up again.

I walked over to the entrance, slowly opening the knob of the door. The light is off. I think my aunt already slept. Puff. I escaped. I slowly tried to sneak into the stairs.

Well, let’s see who’s coming? my aunt’s voice ringed in my ears as the hall lights turned on in a second.

Hi, Aunt Lydia. Did you finish your work? How’s your day? I innocently asked her. She’s still in a heavy coat with many spell books on the chair. She’s always busy helping many non-witches in Slateville to do some powerful spells. You know what? that’s how my parents died. They did some dark spell which drained all their powers. They both died on the same day. That’s all I know.

I think your day will be far good than mine. Where did you go? I told you not to go anywhere, she shouted.

I can’t stay at home every day. I’m going to be sixteen soon. I can’t be alone like this forever. You are putting so much restriction. Do you know I never got a friend in my life? I don’t even know the outer surroundings in Slateville. I never got to see any witches like me. You travelled all over Slateville and even visited Earth and have seen humans. But for me, the entire world is my room. I hate this, I poured every feeling inside me. Maybe I feel better now. She stared at me with her fierce eyes. Then I can see she got hurt by my words. I never shouted like this. She gives me everything I ever wanted right in this house and kept being silent, and I can’t be like this anymore.

All I ever did is for you. Why can’t you understand? Now I’m not in a mood to give you lectures. Just go to your room, she talks with frustration. I don’t know what she’s dealing with. I never had time to know more about her job. But I’m having the worst problem with her.

Whatever. I walked to the stairs, hiding her spell book, and soon I got into my room slammed the door shut. Now it’s almost one o’clock and I’m not in a mood to follow her rules and sleep. I’m going to rebel. I’m going out again through the window.

    CHAPTER-02

Before I step outside, rain poured. Can’t it rain at any other time? Now I’m locked in the house again. But this is not something new to me. I spent all my time trying to do some spells and playing games on my laptop, phone. The technology in Slateville is the same as on Earth. That’s what I heard about it from my aunt. My aunt Lydia is so interested in talking about Earth and humans than talking about Slateville’s people. To be honest, I would better be an ordinary girl on the earth than being a witch in Slateville who is captured in the home for nearly 16 years.

Suddenly, something caught my attention on my desk. I walked over and saw a book. It has a heading ‘Slateville’ on it and a note beside it.

    Dear Sydney,

I know you always wanted to know more about Slateville. So, I bought this book. It has a lot of information about this place. Today, I will come late at midnight. Stay at home-like every day. Bye.

I finished reading it with regret. She wrote it today for me but I left home without even seeing it. She might have kept it in my room while I was watching some romance movies in the hall. I don’t know about other witches, but I have so much interest in romance. Unfortunately, I never ever saw or talked with a boy in real life. It’s all because of the stupid protection Lydia’s trying to do, which I don’t need at all. I love her caring for me and hate the way she’s trying to hide the entire world from me.

I slowly opened the book to view some images of it. I flipped the pages and ended up seeing a royal lady in a blue gown with a tiara and sceptre. She looked so stunning, beautiful. I don’t know what this lady meant to Slateville. Then I read the heading.

    Victoria Hale

    The Witch Queen

I never knew there’s a witch queen in Slateville. But then I noticed the rain stopped. I need to know more about this place, but exploring it will be so good than just reading. I carried the book. I put on my black hoodie to hide my face in case of any problem and opened the window, stepping out of it. I don’t know whether or not Lydia will find out, but I just need to see my outer place at least one time. I promised myself I won’t go outside without her permission. Maybe this will be the first and the last time. I tried to balance on stepping on the edge of the window while having a grip on my book. I carefully jumped and grabbed the pipeline near the window.

Slowly, I make my way down to the ground. I know I’m so good at sneaking out like this. Wish I could have done it earlier. I looked once again at my house and make my way out of the front gate. Lydia probably won’t check on me after she knows I’m upset. I’m not doing anything wrong. If she opened herself more and reveals something about, why am I needed to be protected, I would not escape from my house.

I started walking on the road, glancing at every single thing. I am so grateful to see Slateville right before my eyes. Spending time in the middle of the forest will not be equal to this. There are some people walking on the road right now at midnight. Probably it will be some vampires. Who else will come out of the home? There are many houses in order, bats flying above in the sky. Slateville is just like a city on the earth which I saw in movies. I really wanted to approach someone and talk to them. But approaching a stranger will be crazy. I will be embarrassed if I did something crazy.

Watch your step, I heard a harsh voice. It’s the first voice I have ever heard in my life apart from Lydia. Because I don’t remember my parents. No memories of them at all.

Sorry, I turned to tell, but the person already walked away. Then I took a turn and ended up on an empty road without a single creature. It looked creepy, but I am not afraid of it. I love to see or experience something which gives me goosebumps. Nothing will be creepier than seeing some dead, wandering souls which I summoned today.

I took each step slowly. My footsteps are the only ones to be heard on the whole road. Everyone’s house is locked, with no sign of any people. I expect something more like seeing a demon. It will be interesting. But all I heard is my own breath and heartbeat. It feels like the whole place belongs to me and only to me. Soon I got no excitement in expecting something unusual. It’s just a normal road.

To my astonishment, I can finally make out some shapes over the edge of the road. I’m not a vampire to see it clearly, but I can see two people and a growling sound. As I kept on walking, my feet touched something liquid. That’s when I realized I didn’t wear my slippers. I think it will be water after rain. But I can smell something weird.

Who are you? I heard a firm voice. I looked up to see a person whose face wasn’t visible in the dark. I wish I had brought my torchlight. That person stays in the same place with something in his/her hand.

I’m Sydney. Who are you? I took further steps and faced him. It’s a boy with a brown hair, and he’s not holding any object in his hands. He’s feeding on a girl. The liquid is blood. I stupidly thought it’s water. He might be the first vampire I ever have seen.

Drop the girl, I shouted. I wasn’t planning on saying it, but I did without thinking. Vampires need to feed blood. Who am I to stop it?

Did I need to follow the order of some stranger? he laughed but dropped the girl and stood next to me. I jerked back by seeing a boy, a vampire in real.

     Hi, Iam Jacen.

    CHAPTER-03

He introduced himself while I’m staring blankly at him. He’s in a V-neck shirt and dark jeans with some bloodstains on his shirt and face. He looked so hot. I feel like seeing a handsome boy from a movie. He whipped the blood off from his mouth and stared back.

Did you kill that girl, Jacen? I asked, and felt his name on my lips.

No. She’s unconscious. She will be dead soon. She crossed the line of Slateville. So, I feed on her. Humans aren’t supposed to see this place, he replied and snapped his hand. Suddenly another person emerged from nowhere, taking the girl’s body and vanished. I looked at everything with a wide-opened mouth.

Don’t be shocked. He’s my bodyguard, I didn’t expect a vampire to have some bodyguards. I fixed my eyes on Jacen again, ready to ask another question. I got infinite questions to ask as I never left my house. I got to know more about the surroundings and humans on Earth.

The girl seems so innocent. That’s not fair. Why can’t you feed on animals or use blood bags? I suggested to that handsome stranger.

She’s not innocent. She dumped her boyfriend easily and acted meanly to him on the phone call. That made me freaking hungry and angry, he simply answered, walking straight to a bench on the side of the road. I followed his path. Why do you care about that? Who knows what he did to her? I raised another question, and Jacen’s face immediately became angry.

Because my girlfriend dumped me without a reason. Don’t make me mad or I will feed on you, he snapped and without hesitation, in temper, I raised my hand. A
