About this ebook

Now that the children were out of school, a different era was beginning. The young adults were getting married and having their own families. Problems in the church escalated, but people trusted God to take care of their problems. Good came from a split church. God was glorified because of all the good things that had happened.

The week after Christmas, Aunt Jame and Uncle Eli came back home to the Circle Cross Ranch from their New York visit to their son, Nehemiah, and his family. Rae Jefferson picked them up at the train station and brought them back home. After they unpacked and settled down to relax, Lizzy went over to visit them. Welcome back, Aunt Jame and Uncle Eli. We have missed you two tremendously. Tell me all about your trip to New York. How is your family? Lizzy asked after hugging them.

Mrs. Lizzy, we had the most marvelous time, said Aunt Jame. It was so good to see my family. It was a little cold in New York, but Nehemiah’s home has a good electrical heater. So we stayed warm.

Our family is just awesome, commented Uncle Eli. We hardly noticed the cold weather because of all the family love that was spread around. We did not know that we had so many great-grandchildren—three grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. We are truly blessed.

Aunt Jame was looking a little sad.

Aunt Jame, I know that you miss your family. I can guess what is on your mind. Would you like to talk about it? asked Lizzy.

Mrs. Lizzy, you know that we love you as our own family. Nehemiah has asked Eli and me to live with him and Lucinda. They have lots of room in their home. We will be close to our immediate family.

Aunt Jame, we love you as our own family too. But you know that Rae and I are big on families being together. Do not feel bad about going home to be with Nehemiah. Of all people, you know that Rae will understand. You are welcome to stay here forever, and I wish it could be that way. You know how much we love you and your cooking. Now that y’all have found Nehemiah, I suspected that you all would want to be together. I surely don’t blame anyone for that. Let us know when you two will be leaving. We would like to get the family together to say goodbye. We can write often and keep in touch with one another.

Nehemiah will write a letter and let us know when he is coming to take us to New York with him. When he writes, I will let you know.

Thank you, Aunt Jame. I will go talk with Rae. You both have a good night and don’t worry about us. God works out his good will, said Lizzy.

Lizzy hugged them and left to find Rae to talk with him about the news.

Eli looked at Jame and started reminiscing about the past.

My love, said Eli. We all have made this choice. We are not getting any younger. Look at us—we are frail in our old age. We both have lived a good life, especially the past twenty years here. I promised not to mention this, but I was in love with you when we got married and jumped over that broom. That broom was made of cattail leaves wrapped around a wooden stick. You were pregnant with the master’s baby. We knew that it was wrong of him. It did not matter to me since I was two years older and you had a name with me. It may not have mattered to anyone, being the situation that we were in, but it did matter to us. I loved you then, and I still love you. I promise not to ever mention this again. The reason that I have mentioned it now is because when I took Nehemiah in as my very own, I adopted him as my son. To me, he is mine. It is up to you if you ever think that you have to tell him. I love Nehemiah as my own child and have never looked back and never will. Eli took Jame’s hand in his and kissed her on the cheek.

Eli, the past is the past. Let’s leave it that way. We will live for the future and take what God is giving us. Thank you for all that you have given me. We will live the rest of our years together with family.

    ***

Lizzy found Rae getting ready to retire for the night. Rae, you know what all this means. I do not blame Aunt Jame and Uncle Eli for wanting to live with their family. They have been so good to us. I will hate to see them leave. They need to spend their last days on this earth with family. They deserve to be together. I would feel the same way. Nehemiah looks a lot lighter than Aunt Jame and Uncle Eli. He is a very nice-looking man.

"I figured the very first time that I met Nehemiah that he would take his parents home with him. I surely will miss their cooking. Nehemiah’s complexion is very light, but we will not go into that. JoAnn is doing a fine job cooking, and I am thankful that she is here. But I am not sure how long D’Anna will let us borrow her. I will talk with John and D’Anna about the situation and
