A New Amish Wedding - Global Grafx Press

    Prologue

J ust focus on the gut news. You two are dating and getting to know each other better. And you don’t have to worry as much about Leona’s refusal to admit that life does change. I just have this to say about her stubbornness: If she gets married, and then loses her husband, she’s going to experience what you went through for so long. Then, Liz? Then, she’ll understand.

After Ruth left, Liz began working on supper, thinking about everything her friend had said. She’s right. I just pray to Gott that Leona will never, ever experience the kind of loneliness that I went through.

Several weeks later, Liz got a letter from Leona. Ripping it open, she sat, stunned. Leona was coming back for a short visit. And she says I’d better not bring that man into our house? No. Fueled with the new courage she’d developed over the months she and Adam had been seeing each other, Liz pulled a pen and paper out of the sideboard. Leona, I just got your letter. I would love to see you. But if you’re going to bring that attitude of divisiveness with you, then I would prefer not to see you. I’ll tell Elizabeth and the boys that you are coming here for a visit and let them make arrangements to spend time with you.

Life changes, daughter. Even after an event that makes everyone in a family hurt and grieve. Life can become better again. Living without your daed’s love had condemned me to being buried on earth, even though I’m still breathing. Gott has given me a second chance at love. If you can’t accept this, then, I am sorry, Leona. Love, Mamm

Before sending it, Liz decided to wait for one night, and then read it in the morning. If my feelings are the same tomorrow morning, then I’ll mail it. She hid the letter securely in her armoire.

That night, while she and the kinder were eating their supper, she set her fork down. I have some news. I got a letter from Leona. It’s on the sideboard, if you want to read it. She’s coming here at the end of next month, when things start to cool off here. I told her that the three of you could see her if you wish to do so.

Elizabeth shook her head. Nee, not me, Mamm. Both Sam and Hank made the same decision.

Liz was sad at this. Sighing, she shook her head. Elizabeth, please start the dishes for me. I’m going to call your auntie and tell her of your decision. I also told her that if she was going to maintain her negative attitude, I couldn’t spend time with her. I’ll let your Auntie Millie and Leona decide what to do. Rising, she walked quietly outside to the phone house. Placing the call, she waited.

John heard the phone’s ring inside the house. Running outside, he grabbed it. Hallo?

John? It’s Liz. How are you?

We’re fine. Are you calling about Leona’s plans?

Ya. She told me that she would be happy to see me if I wasn’t seeing Mister Yoder. I can’t allow her to push me back into that lonely place. So I decided that if the kinder here wanted to see her and spend time with her, they could do so. John, they all decided they didn’t want to. And, I—

You didn’t let them know about your decision beforehand, did you?

Nee. I wanted their decision to be prompted by their own feelings. I can’t talk to Leona right now. I’m too upset. Would you please let her know that we all arrived at the same decision?

Ya, I will. Liz, don’t feel guilty. She arrived at her positions on her own. And, because of her fears, she’s not able to budge from them.

Denki, John. Liz hung the phone up quietly, wondering how the beliefs of one family member could split a family more effectively than even death

    Chapter 1

Liz regretfully sent the letter to Leona. She knew she and all of her kinder would hurt as a result of what Leona had decided to do, and because of the decision that Liz, herself, had to make. Leona is a smart girl, but she’s not wise about how life really unfolds. She believes she has all the answers. I pray she does! And I pray that her life with her boyfriend and, hopefully, husband, will be full of love and happiness. Wiping a stray tear from her face, she reflected on the grandchildren she had little chance to get to love, if Leona stuck to her decision. Well, there’s not much I can do. It’s in Gott’s hands now. He will be the one to work this out in His own way. After making that decision, Liz felt a tiny bit better. Looking at her current quilting order, she counted up the number of items she had already finished and put into the large cabinet. Oh! I only have to finish the two quilts, and then I’m done! Mentally, she sighed with relief. The second half of the payment from her Englisch client would come in handy, as she still needed to pay the property taxes for the year.

That night, Liz noticed that Elizabeth’s cheeks were pinker than usual. Are you feeling okay, daughter?

What? Oh, ya! She stifled a giggle.

Well, are you going to tell me the big mystery here? Or do I have to pull every word out of you? Liz relaxed, knowing her daughter was healthy—and happy.

Well, I’m not yet ready for rumspringa. But there’s a boy who’s interested in me—

Liz raised one hand to slow Elizabeth’s rush of words. Wait. Hold on right there. You know you’re not allowed to see anyone until you’re sixteen.

Elizabeth’s expression changed from happy to crestfallen in an eye blink. But…Mamm. He’s—

Tell me who he is. But no dating. You’re not even fifteen!

The Schrock’s son. Mark. He just turned fifteen, himself.

Okay. I know the family is a gut one. But no. No dating until you start attending sings.

Elizabeth, looking at Liz, realized she wasn’t going to budge an inch. She sighed, feeling disappointed. Can we—?

You can hang around him with other kids your age. In a group, only. If he thinks highly enough of you and if Gott wills it, then his interest in you will still be there by your sixteenth birthday. And yours in him. After all, look at— Liz had been about to mention Leona, but she wasn’t sure if that would make Elizabeth feel any better.

    Look at what?

Liz decided the moment was too important. I was going to say ‘never mind.’ But this is too important. You’re young and learning about your life. Do you remember how interested your sister was in Joel? And how, just a few weeks before she moved to Indiana, she decided she was no longer interested in him?

Ya, but she had a gut reason.

"Ya, she did. And I’m glad she realized his preoccupation with the, er, physical side of relationships wasn’t a gut thing. And I hope mentioning her won’t be too hurtful."

Mamm, don’t worry about that. It hurts. Ya. But it’s also important that I learn these things.

Liz decided she had to ask the next question. I don’t want to stick my nose where it’s not welcome. But your future relies on honesty. Is Mark respectful of your feelings and, uh, your innocence?

Elizabeth flushed deeply. This was totally new to her and she nearly choked in pushing her answer out. "Y-ya, he is. You taught me very well. I am not going to allow anyone to push me into a decision that
