    ––––––––

I have to thank God first and foremost for the gift of my life and the life of my family. I also have to thank my family for putting up with my crazy hours and how stressed out I can get as I approach a deadline. In addition, I must thank the ladies at Global Grafx Press for working with me to help make my books the best they can be. And last, I thank you, for taking the time to read this book. God Bless!

    Chapter 1

The dark silence of the pre-morning hour was suddenly interrupted by a violent pounding, just outside Jacob’s window. He immediately pulled a pillow over his head, doing his best to negate the horrible sound, but moments later it began to shake the house. It wasn’t a violent shaking; it was more of a dull thud every few seconds. Though he buried his head deep within his mattress, it simply wasn’t something that he could ignore.

Shut up, he muttered as the noise increased. Just shut up!

His words obviously went unheard, and even if half of his face weren’t buried in the feather mattress, it certainly wouldn’t have carried outdoors. A few moments later the pounding increased, and he finally recognized it as the sound of a bass speaker, probably the type they installed in cars. He’d heard them in stereo shops and certainly on the streets back in the city. The question he had to ask himself, however, was why on earth anyone would be using one out here? It hadn’t happened before that he knew of, and now that it was happening, it was at the most inconvenient time.

Shut up, he moaned into the pillow again. I have to get up earlier than God; let me sleep!

It didn’t stop. It kept going, and going, and going, until he nearly leapt out of bed and screamed through the open window. Just as he was about to climb out of bed, the noise stopped, and he breathed a sigh of relief. He had no idea just how long he had left to sleep, but he knew he didn’t want to interrupt it by actually climbing out of bed. That would be problematic, and annoying. Instead, he rolled back over and faced the wall, his eyes barely open, and his consciousness finally drifting back to sleep. Then it happened again. That horrible thudding. It had returned.

Jacob, what is that? Sarah shouted from her room on the other side of the wall.

It’s someone’s stupid car! Jacob shouted back, his voice cracking.

We don’t call things stupid, stupid! Sarah shouted back.

I don’t care, Jacob said, as the noise became louder. It’s stupid!

Finally, and with great reluctance, Jacob jumped out of his bed and stomped over to the window. If everyone in the house had not been awake by now, his pounding footsteps had certainly done the job. He didn’t care. He thrust his head through the open window, and his eyes strained toward the road. He couldn’t see a thing. There was absolutely nothing on the road, though it certainly sounded as if there should be. He practically screamed in frustration and walked back to his bed, not sure exactly what time it was. There was no clock in the room whatsoever, but he was certain of one thing: if it was anywhere close to time to get up, he was going to kill someone, and not just figuratively. He groaned and flopped back onto the bed, covering his head until finally, at long last, the pounding stopped, and the world was silent once again, save for the sound of crickets here and there.

Oh well, Jacob heard Thomas say from the other room.  It was time to get up anyway.

Jacob immediately let out a scream, not unlike those heard in poorly written cartoons, or perhaps as had been heard from Darth Vader at the end of the third Star Wars movie. His scream lasted for what he’d guessed was hours, but in reality was only about a minute.

You done yet? Thomas asked through the wall.

Jacob crawled out of his bed and gritted his teeth, once again staring out the window to see what was making that horrible noise. He gripped both sides of the bedroom window and leaned out. In about five minutes the sky would erupt into a shade of blue, and the road out front would be illuminated perfectly. Unfortunately, by the time this happened, the source of the noise would be long gone, such as it had been for the last four days.

Jacob couldn’t even remember having a decent night’s sleep, at least not one that had not been interrupted at the last minute by that horrible pounding noise. This noise, though horribly common in the city, was one that he’d been happy to live without. It begged the question of who would want to drive a car, with a bass speaker blaring, at ten miles per hour down his road, at four o’clock in the morning.

He contemplated going back to bed. He could just explain to Thomas that there had been mitigating circumstances. Of course, he’d tried simply staying in bed once, and it had ended with Sarah dumping a bucket of water over his head. He wasn’t about to repeat that exercise, so he instead walked to his closet, found an appropriate outfit, and stomped to the door. This was set to be an amazing week.

    Chapter 2

Thomas had never been a fan of Englischer technology, but when it came to loading the barn with hay, he wasn’t about to do it by hand. Instead, he always made sure to call a local delivery company, which utilized a sort of conveyor belt to run the bales up to the loft. His logic was that he wasn’t using it himself, and he was never there when it happened, at least not anymore. For
