About this ebook

Three Plays includes the play Rose, which is set in Canada and is about an actress who never marries. Three Husbands is about an actress who is self-obsessed and married three times. Taj Mahal is a love affair between a Hindu woman and a Muslim man. In all three plays, the writer has tried to show the different faces of women and how women act depending on their circumstances.

    About the Author

    Author’s Note

It has taken considerable time, patience and hard work to print my first collection of plays. Taj Mahal is a play set during the time of partition between India and Pakistan, a love story which takes place during that time. Rose is a play set in Canada about a beautiful actress. Three Husbands is a play about an actress who is married three times and is self obsessed. I hope you enjoy reading the plays.

    Act I Scene I

Noor is in the hospital. 1947 riots in Agra. Civil war in India and Pakistan.

NOOR: How long will I have to be in the hospital doctor?

DOCTOR: For at least two months. The wound on your leg is very bad. You’re lucky that you have not lost your leg. The bullet was quite deep.

NOOR: I know I am lucky to have found you. How is my friend Akbar doing?

    DOCTOR: He died last night.

NOOR: (Breaks down) May Allah bless his soul!

DOCTOR: I must go now. There are too many patients waiting for me. Take care!

NOOR: If only I was not a member of the political party, this would have never happened to me.

DOCTOR: Fate is in God’s hands.

    Scene II

After two months, Noor recovers and is well now.

NOOR: (Thinking) I am glad they are sending me to Lahore. At least there I would not be discriminated as a Muslim. But, I still think there is no need for partition. Too much bloodshed for nothing. India belongs to both Hindus and Muslims. Having a separate nation means more trouble. More riots. Civil war. Anyways, I better not think of such dreary thoughts. Since, I have nothing to do this afternoon, I should visit the Taj. It would take my mind off trouble. The Taj is so grand! A symbol of immortal love!

(Noor visits the Taj and his eyes fall on a beautiful woman.)

NOOR: (Thinking) Who is she? She is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. But, she is not alone. She is surrounded by her relatives. She is not a Muslim girl otherwise, she would have covered her face. I should not be thinking of her. Besides, I am leaving for Lahore in a few days.

(The beautiful woman passes him by. Her hair smell of white musk and she drops a book of poetry from her hand. Noor picks it up and reads the title The poetry of Mirza Ghalib. The title of the book is in Urdu. He returns the book and their eyes meet.)
