PREFACE
25168.pngPastor, I know God is going to help me win the lottery…I’m going to give my tithe to the church and you will be able to build that new building with the money.
That is the attitude many people have about money and prosperity. That reflects their belief that prosperity is about how much money a person has. The most telling part of this statement is the concept that if we simply have faith in Christ, He will bless our lives with more money and material things.
Many people have a rabid appetite to live well. Prosperity is the American Dream.
Many preachers and pastors, especially those in mega churches and on television preach a Prosperity Theology.
Their premise is simple: have a relationship with God and everything will turn out right and He will work miracles and rain down blessings and you will live a rich man’s lifestyle and have the best of everything. God will give health and wealth like you have never had before. (The next thing out of their mouth is, Just send your seed offering to us and God will multiply it ten-fold.
) But they forget some of the principles of how to live well. One should live right in order to live well.
It would seem no one would prefer to live wrong. Nobody tries to deliberately live in such a way as to harm other people or cause their own lives to be ruined. There are some who make choices to live that way, and they pay the price and pay dearly.
Books by the thousands are sold each year dealing with how to succeed or how to accomplish great things. But not many books start with the premise of instructing people how to live right.
America and probably the whole world is obsessed with living well. Go to the local big box stores and you will have an idea how much the average person desires to live well and own the latest toys and gadgets.
A new ad campaign on television for investing in precious metals ends with the slogan, Live Well.
Just invest in these metals instead of other investments and you will be rolling in riches.
My conviction is that it is more important to live right than to live well. In fact, living right should result in living well. Read Psalm 1 and you will see God’s way of blessing those who live right. It is contrary to society’s formula of hard work, believing in one’s self and having a positive attitude. It is a statement of the life that God blesses so that one can live well.
Part of the problem is that even churches and preachers have fallen into the mistaken philosophy of prosperity theology.
That is, If God loves you, He must send His blessing in the form of monetary prosperity to show that love.
They are false teachers, leading many people astray with promises of financial prosperity without teaching them they must be saved by the blood of Christ through repentance and faith. After one comes to Christ, the believer’s life involves following the principles of obedience and living right and allowing God to bless them
