CHAPTER 1
On one sunny afternoon in May, the Collins family was having a wonderful birthday party for 5-year-old Brian. The party was being held at their house outside in the backyard. Picnic tables, food, balloons, gifts, family, friends, and more were present at this glorious occasion. Brian was having a great time with his family and friends, and of course, all of the activities. But one thing was stuck in his mind every moment he played: a puppy. He had been dropping hints all year, and his parents had been asking questions like they were going to get a puppy, but they had never outright promised him one.
After he had opened all of his presents, he also realized that his mother did not say there was a gift from mommy and daddy.
He turned to look at his mom, who is guessing what he was about to say, Your daddy is bringing in your present now.
Before his dad could even make it around the corner of the living room wall, Brian heard a cute little puppy bark. Brian’s eyes popped wide open and a big smile came over his face, and he yelled, Yay!
He got up off the floor where he was sitting to open the gifts and ran over to where the sound came from right as his dad came around the corner holding the cutest little brown puppy.
It was a chocolate Labrador puppy. Brian immediately grabbed the puppy and held it close to him as the puppy began to smell and lick his face. It was a match made in heaven.
Brian then showed his puppy to his friends so they could join the fun. Brian’s parents stood there, hugging each other with joy, happy that Brian loved his new dog so much.
Thank goodness this was the end of the party: Brian was so distracted with the puppy that he did not do anything but play with it the rest of the time. The party ended and everyone went home, but the fun had just begun for Brian.
He knew that he would have to take care of the puppy and provide for him. He found two bowls for food and water and set them out in a place that is suitable for the puppy. He then found some old blankets that his mother approved of and made a bed for the dog right beside his bed.
Hmmm, let’s see, what else do you need?
said Brian to himself.
The little puppy just sat there and turned his head back and forth like he was listening to what Brian said.
Brian went over to his dad and asked him what else he needed for the puppy.
Brian’s dad said, Well son, he does need a name.
A name? I get to name him?
said Brian. He had thought the puppy had come with a name.
Yes you do.
Brian made a fist and leaned his chin on his hand to think; he had seen his dad do that when he was thinking about something extra serious. Hmmm, who should you be, cute little puppy?
said Brian. I got it! Rocky. I like the name Rocky.
Brian walked over to the puppy and picked him up, saying, Hey Rocky. That is your name from now on, little puppy.
As Rocky looked back at his new person, he had the feeling that life was about to get a whole lot more exciting.
CHAPTER 2
Over the next couple of weeks, Brian and Rocky became inseparable best friends. They played ball, hide-and-seek, and other fun games that they both loved. Brian also tried to teach Rocky, as he put it, tricks and manners, so he will grow up to be a great dog.
Rocky always slept right next to Brian’s bed to protect his new best friend. Rocky stayed awake until he saw that Brian was asleep, and then he would drift off to sleep.
Brian’s parents saw that Rocky was a great addition to their family. Besides little accidents
when he was excited, Rocky was a fine puppy. Rocky knew that his job was to play with and protect Brian, but he always had little urges to run toward water, any water.
Rocky did not understand why he always wanted to play in water and fetch things like balls, frisbees, and even newspapers, but he did know deep down that he was loved and that he loved his home.
On days when Rocky and Brian played in the front yard, Rocky could hear another dog’s voice on the other side of the fence. He figured that it was another happy dog and his family. He only wished that he could see who was over there because if the barking and laughter were any indication, he seemed to always have a great time.
While Rocky and Brian were playing catch in the front yard, the door of the house next door opened and out came a little brown-haired girl in a ponytail and a beautiful fluffy puppy.
Rocky immediately noticed the two. Wow, what a cute puppy,
Rocky said to himself. The little girl was calling the puppy Molly,
and Rocky heard the name. Molly, is that a girl name? Is she a girl puppy? I would sure like to meet her. She looks like she might be my age,
thought Rocky enthusiastically.
Within a minute, Molly bounded over toward Rocky, her eyes focused behind her, watching and waiting for a ball to be thrown at her. The girl threw the ball over Molly’s head, so when she turned around to chase the ball, she ran into Rocky, and they both fell to the ground.
Molly stood up quickly to see what—or rather whom—she pummeled.
In a shy yet excited way, Molly apologized to Rocky. I am so sorry. I was chasing a ball, and I did not see you. Are you okay?
Rocky just lay there looking up at her the whole time, his mouth gaping open. He had ‘puppy love’ eyes. Rocky began to stutter in an attempt to respond to Molly. Uh, uh, okay. I mean, yes, I am ok,
he said as he jumped up from the ground. I am fine. I was just was playing ball like you,
continued Rocky.
I like playing ball, too,
said Molly. My owner is Emma. She is my best friend and we live right over there.
She pointed with her paw to their house.
Emma stood on the porch steps waiting on Molly to come back with the ball. Molly, here girl. Come on. Bring the ball girl,
said Emma.
Molly heard Emma calling her and ran to grab the ball that had rolled away. She headed back to Rocky, dropped the ball from her mouth, and stated, I have to go. Maybe we could talk or play sometime.
Sure, I would like that, but I don’t even know your name
said Rocky. Like, he was pretty sure he knew her name, but he didn’t want to seem weird for knowing her name since she hadn’t properly introduced herself yet.
I am Molly, and I am a cocker spaniel. It is nice to meet you. What is your name?
said Molly.
I am a Labrador, and my name is Rocky,
he said.
Molly giggled and started to say something but was interrupted by Emma calling her again. She picked up the ball once more, gave Rocky a wink, and ran back to Emma. Rocky stood there just watching her play with Emma until he heard Brian call for him.
Brian was in the flower bed looking for worms, so Rocky joined in and began digging like crazy. Dirt was flying everywhere, but Rocky and Brian were having so much fun
