Ooouch!
The pain shot through my back as I moved my hand. I struggled to open my eyes. My eyelids felt so very heavy.
The ceiling tilted into view. Merry! Merry, where is she? Where’s my little Merryl?
The monitor beeped loudly and quickly as I struggled to sit up.
The door opened and a nurse rushed in.
Mr. Sung, sir, please do not move. The doctor will be here shortly.
Her hands gently but firmly pushed me back onto the bed. Then she raised the bed so that I was in a reclining position. A doctor walked in briskly.
Good afternoon, Mr. Sung. It’s good to have you back. I’m Dr. Soo. How are you feeling?
The nurse turned me gently on my side and removed the dressing on my back.
"Good afternoon, Dr. Soo. What do you mean? It’s good to have me back? Did I go somewhere?
Ah..Mr. Sung. You were in a coma for two weeks. The wound in your back is healing nicely. We just have to do a few more tests to ensure that you’re fine. After that you can be discharged.
The nurse cleaned the wound and changed the dressing. Then she eased me onto my back.
And when will that be, Doc.?
A week’s time, Mr. Sung. If you need any help, the nurses are on hand. Good day, sir.
No sooner had the doctor left than two men walked in.
Good afternoon, sir. We’re police officers and we would like to ask you a few questions relating to the shooting at the Crystal Hotel.
The shooting!! Oh my God! Merry! Laura! Every detail of that dreadful day swept into my mind. I nodded.
Can you please tell us what happened that morning, sir?
I found out that an old friend had returned here and was staying at the Crystal. I went there to see her.
Your friend was Ms. Merry Lu?
Yes.
Why did Mrs. Sung go to the hotel?
I had no idea.
We know you assigned a private investigator to put a tail on Ms. Lu. Why did you do that?
I didn’t want her to leave before I had a chance to talk to her.
The tail reported that Mrs. Sung was following Ms. Lu and she was directed to follow and prevent Mrs. Sung from following Ms. Lu. Why did you give those instructions?
I didn’t want my wife to confront Ms. Lu. My wife has a very hot temper and I was afraid that something untoward could happen.
Did Mrs. Sung know Ms. Lu?
No, they never met and I never told her about Ms. Lu.
Why did she want to shoot Ms. Lu? Who is Ms. Lu, Mr. Sung?
She’s from my past and the mother of my daughter.
We found this in Mrs. Sung’s purse.
The police officer handed me an old photograph. It was a group photo that had Merry and I in it. A big, red cross had been scratched across Merry’s face.
Oh my God! So Laura had found out about Merry and had been tracking her as well! That’s why she went to the hotel! She had wanted to kill Merry!
"Yes, Ms. Lu and I were in love but I moved here and didn’t know that she had a baby. I only learned last year when we met by chance that her little girl was actually my daughter.
"I wanted shared custody of my daughter but before anything could be arranged, she left.
So I took steps to trace her whereabouts and when she returned here, I went to the hotel to try to talk to her about it. You know what happened next.
We’d still like to hear your version, sir.
"I was in the room with Ms. Lu when loud knocks on the door prevented us from discussing anything. I opened the door and my wife walked in.
"She was very angry. I tried to get her to leave but she refused. Then she said that the child in the photo which I carried in my wallet, was Ms. Lu’s bastard.
"I got angry and slapped her, saying that no one was calling my
