About this ebook

Mental health in the African American community has never been fully studiedhistorically considering the impact of slavery. When we consider the relationship between mental health and slavery, questions begin to arise. How is slavery characterized? Was slavery a disease? Or was it simply a means for economic gain that incidentally resulted in the desecration of a culture due to greed manifested among slave traders and profiteers?

There is no doubt that it is important to understand the impact that slavery had on the mental health of those who were affected by this institution.

Join me as we explore how slavery created the most hideous mental health problems that African-Americans have experienced and continue to experience in American society today.

    SILENT ANGER

A History of Mental Health Care in Black America.

There was little advancement in mental health care, and what little was known was surely not available to slaves. Slaves were not placed in clinical therapy or psychiatric attention. Nor were they given adequate medical support.

Slaves were never given treatment for psychosis, neurosis, depression, stress, anxiety, or any mental health related issues. The only treatment given for such conditions were beatings, lashes, or inhumane tactics to solicit obedience from the disabled slave.
