    ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Writing books and developing online curriculum on bullying has been a passion of mine in an effort to help schools and other organizations implement research-based strategies to stop dangerous acts of bullying in their environments. While attending the 2018 National Conference on Education in Nashville, Tennessee, I met SJ Hart who is the author of the book Lies In Silence, and executive director of SJ Hart & Associates International Mental Health and Suicide Management Education.

After having a dialogue with Hart on bipolar disorder, I was curious about how some of the research on best practices to address bullying might relate to bipolar disorder. I became even interested in the subject matter with the possibility of writing a book. I became more interested in the topic when I read Hart’s book on Lies in Silence. The book is based on her family’s story about three generations suffering from bipolar disorder, other mental illnesses and one completed suicide.

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks (National Institute of Mental Health). While there is a necessity for improved diagnosis and treatment for bipolar disorder, individuals and organizations need more relevant and update information about the brain disorder.

Considering the time, energy, and commitment it takes to write a book, I wholeheartedly thank my wife, Constance C. Holmes for being the editor for the book. Her continued dedication and unwavering support to my work is greatly appreciated. I would like to thank SJ Hart for being supportive of my interest and writing the foreword for the book. I would also like to thank the participants who shared their stories about bipolar disorder.

    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to all individuals who are living with the disease of bipolar disorder. It is my hope that this book will serve as a vehicle to inform individuals and organizations of what to know to assist those living with bipolar disorder.

    FOREWORD

I attended the National AASA Conference in March 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee. As a presenter, I am accustomed to meeting many different types of people—some due to the area of the country, some due to their number of years as a professional, and most due to personality and interest. I am profoundly relieved when I meet others who have some level of interest in discussing mental illnesses and suicide management. Dr. Ronald W. Holmes, PhD is a good example. He is well versed in many theories regarding human development and systemic theories including microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem and chronosystem. Dr. Holmes quickly understood the need for broad systems to aggressively impact treatment with mood spectrum disorders and to decrease the rate of suicides worldwide.

While standing in the vendors’ hall during the conference I felt gravely concerned, as many administrators and other professionals did not wish to discuss mood disorders, the bipolar spectrum disorder, nor suicidal ideation now being researched as a severe chronic illness therefore needing management. Dr. Holmes approached me with sincere interest, the desire to learn, and to understand what these diseases were doing to our youth, how they were putting them at risk, and how to make an impact within the world of education. Most importantly he asked what he could do and how he could help.

Dr. Holmes’ book is essential for individuals and families living with
