About this ebook

GUITAROLOGY
Guitar playing can be fun and easy…if you have the right technique. The very first thing we talk about is how LITTLE effort it actually takes to get a good tone. From there you'll learn all about all of the different parts of the guitar, your basic notes (and how to use those to play almost every song you'll ever want to play), and of course chords & scales. The 2nd half of the book covers how to read music, starting from the easiest single notes, and progressing to a decent intermediate level.

Steve Stockmal

Steve Stockmal, professional drummer and music instructor, began performing music at the age of 5. He is an honor graduate of the Percussion Institute of Technology (PIT), an author and publisher (president of SMG Inc), and maintains a full schedule of performing and teaching music. He has appeared as drummer, singer, and guitarist with groups like Mercenary, Crystal-Reign, & Pelikanesis (featuring Paull Rubin). Fronting his own band he plays concerts showcasing original compositions and appears as a solo act singing and playing blues, ballads, rock, and jazz standards. Throughout his career Steve has played a diverse variety of musical styles and venues ranging from intimate Jazz clubs and society gigs, television and radio spots, international tours, and theater performances, to 10,000 seat rock concerts. He performed as percussionist with SIERRA WINDS (a 35 piece classical woodwind orchestra), and played the role of drummer Jerry Allison in the Garvin Theatre’s production of The Buddy Holly Story. Combining his extensive training with years of touring & teaching, Mr. Stockmal has synthesized his knowledge into a series of educational music books and videos.

    Preface

Learning to play the guitar involves three things...tuning, technique, and sound.

Tuning: Much of your life as a guitarist will be spent changing strings and tuning...so get used to it and get good at it. See page 8 where I will show you several ways to tune. Don’t always rely on your electronic tuner...use your ears, use your knowledge.

Technique: Keep your hands and fingers relaxed, that is the first goal of technique. Practice slowly and correctly, paying close attention to your finger placement. Notice how hard (or soft) you push the strings to play chords and melody lines. Play slowly so that soon you will be able to play as fast as you want to, and still be relaxed.

Sound: Get a good sound with each note that you play, striving for long smooth tones. Also, for you electric guitar players, experiment and ask questions about how to get different sounds from your amplifier, fingers, and pick.

ABOUT THE CD: The first 9 tracks on your CD are the jams from pages 51 & 52. Use these to practice playing
