    ––––––––

IN WRITING OUT THESE DRUMSTICK SPINS, I found it necessary to invent a system of descriptions using letters, numbers, words, directions, pictures, and diagrams to help express exactly what the various maneuvers called for. The technical information of my system is explained in the beginning of the book (Part I), preparing you to fully understand the actual spins (Part II). I have written, rewritten, and re-rewritten them all several times in an attempt to present this material clearly so that you will be able to understand it easily.

I SUGGEST THAT YOU APPROACH each spin as would a Kung-Fu Master... slowly, patiently, methodically, until the overall picture is seen. Only then can repetition become possible, and the more repetition, the more speed and capability is gained.

    ––––––––

I hope my efforts will serve you well. Steve Stockmal

Spinning drumsticks and playing drums are two different worlds bound by only one thing...the sticks!

The ultimate goal of this book is to teach the student of Spinology how to spin drumsticks, and how to incorporate this knowledge into his/her playing.

    ––––––––

To spin or not to spin... that

    is the question.

ONCE WHILE PLAYING DRUMS in a touring band I was involved in a small accident and cut my left hand. For two or three weeks I was forced to play the entire show utilizing my other three limbs, allowing the injured hand to recover. From that experience I was freed from playing glued to the drum set and found myself more willing to take chances with my stick spinning, singing, choreography, etc. because I knew I could always cover the sound with my available hands or

    feet.

SPINNING THE STICKS enhances what people see in a performance by creating an added dimension, the visual aspect of playing music. The best thing for me to see is a great drummer who occasionally throws in a killer stick-spin, enhancing climactic moments, and filling in the empty spaces, thus adding to the show.

BY CONSTANTLY WORKING with the drumsticks, you’ll see that your playing actually improves and benefits in several ways. While familiarizing your hands and mind with the size, weight, and feel
