PREMISE
You seriously should write a sit-com!
If I had a dime for every time I heard that, I wouldn’t need to write anything… I’d be sitting on a remote beach with a witness-protected alias and 50 million in an off-shore account. Let’s just say my family is f@#ked up… in a good way, of course.
We’re Greek* so we’re loud and we’ll tell you exactly what we think (whether you ask or not). In other words, we don’t hide behind the truth; we sock you in the nuts with it. But we are right. Just ask us.
* I’m technically not Greek, but my husband is 100%, and once you’ve lived with that for 25+ years you’ve earned the right. Plus, my mother-in-law always reminds me that I’m Greek by injection.
(Oy!)
Here’s a little sitcom scenario to prove my point. My husband, a medical sales rep at the time, loaded our grill and all the supplies for Greek Chicken in the back of his pickup, to provide an authentic lunch for a bunch of physicians. His parents were visiting, so he grabbed his dad (a fantastic cook) and headed off to one of his best accounts, a large hospital. While my husband was inside setting up, my father-in-law grilled amazing Greek chicken in the hospital parking lot. They didn’t pre-think the notion that there might be a couple stray dogs in the area, so when they showed up begging, he had to keep pushing them away. Easy enough. But then he didn’t have anyone to guard the grill when he got the urge! So, logic said pee in the grass just around the corner with the grill sizzling in the background… duh. (Logic was invented by Greeks, so this makes it okay.) Fortunately, my husband showed up to man the grill and fend off dogs in time for him to run inside and wash his hands before he touched anything.
(This was back in the 90’s, people… back when there was no social media to share
an opinion on this being gross, so just laugh.)
What’s your secret?
That’s the comment that quickly follows the ‘sit-com’ comment… and it’s the real reason I’m writing this book. I didn’t start out with the habits for great health, finances and happiness. I had to figure them out.
My Secrets
are simple:
1. You must challenge yourself.
My grandfather, Les Chaffin (who fell to Alzheimer’s), always challenged me to grow financially. He bought a fledgling business and built it up, hated paying taxes, and took advantage of every write-off within the law. He would say "It’s
