    Chapter 1

    An Unexpected Treasure

    Anybody who wants pancakes before I have to go to work had better get out to the barn and find some eggs Mom called from the kitchen.

    I’ll get ’em! answered Jordan, jumping up from his desk chair. Just a minute. He only needed 100 more points to beat his own personal best on his new computer game.

    No, let me! Let me! squealed little sister Riley, as she raced past Jordan’s room, down the stairs and into the yard.

    I did it! said Jordan as his score flashed onto the screen. I am the greatest gamer ever! he boasted, as he stormed down the stairs to catch up with Riley. No worries! He would catch her. After all, she was only 6 years old, and a girl.

    They both loved collecting eggs from their free range chickens in their big old barn. They would see who could find the first egg, and who could find the most eggs. It was like a treasure hunt every day. Dad said they would get more animals someday. They might even get a horse. But while he was away serving his country they would just have to enjoy the chickens. Mom liked having the chickens, too. They ate the bugs in her vegetable garden, and just about took care of themselves all summer. That was great because with Dad being away, her nursing job at the clinic, taking care of the house, along with Jordan and Riley, her time was pretty much used up.

    Jordan and Riley ran through the yard with the morning sun shining on their backs, and burst into the cool darkness of the barn. It took a minute for their eyes to adjust to the dim light, but then the search was on.

    Wauck! Wauck! A chicken protested as Jordan moved her over to collect the first egg. I got one! he said, lifting the egg high in the
