About this ebook

After 8 months, Jordan's wife Riley is ready to be done being pregnant. And with Christmas just around the corner, he only wishes he could give her a break. When those words come out of his mouth -- "I wish I could have the baby for you" -- he thinks he notices the fragile heirloom star flicker atop the tree. The next morning, his "wish" has come true -- he's now the pregnant wife, and Riley the doting, if somewhat frazzled, husband. Over the course of a month, Jordan realizes that he had no idea the true depth of what it takes to prepare to give birth.

A Holiday Wish - Liam Slade

    A Holiday Wish

    By Liam Slade

Babe, what’s going on? Jordan asked as his wife approached him, taking him by the arm. Why aren’t you-- where’s the baby?

Riley offered Jordan a bemused, knowing smirk that baffled him. Um, right where we left it, I assume. She tapped Jordan right on his midsection. As she gripped Jordan’s hand to help him sit up – a motion Jordan himself had done many a time over the past several months, his eyes were drawn down.

    What do you m—oh my…

Jordan could only see his midsection was swollen way out, dominating his field of vision, big as a beach ball and many, many times as heavy. Suddenly he was aware of his immense girth. And above that belly was a pair of hugely inflated breasts whose cleavage he could see via a low-cut woman’s tank he was unexpectedly wearing. He reached up to touch them and found them all too real – and achingly, tenderly sore.

    Oh God, I’m… he gasped.

You’re…? Riley smiled, almost oblivious as to the source of Jordan’s alarm.

His eyes went to the mirror across the room. There he did not see himself and his wife. Instead, he saw standing over the bed a slim, average-looking man who shared many of Riley’s features: pale skin and dark eyes but with fashionably clipped brown hair parted to the side of his scalp instead of Riley’s long locks, and a dusting of stubble on his chin. And next to him, barely sitting up in the bed, a pretty, if puffy-faced and unrested-looking woman with long, curly blonde hair who Jordan somewhat recognized as a female version of himself – eight months pregnant.

A little higher, over more… no, the other direction, down, okay perfect!

Riley directed from the couch as Jordan was perched precariously on the step-stool trying to find the perfect place on the tree for a gold Christmas ball, one of over a dozen in the pack. From the speaker, Paul McCartney was singing about having a wonderful Christmastime.

No, you know what, I don’t like it there, Riley finally decided, It’s covering the candy cane.

Jordan blew a ‘pfft’ of exasperation and removed the ball to await further instructions. Was it irritating that his wife was always so particular about the placement of Christmas ornaments on the tree? Of course, but Christmas was of the utmost importance to her, so he wanted to make it as festive as possible, even if that meant taking her drill sergeant-like directions.

There was something else making this Christmas more special than in the past: Riley was pregnant with their first child, due on December 23rd. It was now December 1st and the woman was as big as a house. It was only fair that Jordan take care to make her every whim and wish come true.

Help me up, help me up, Riley reached out for Jordan’s hand to pull her from her seat. I want a closer look. Although she was large with child, to Jordan’s eyes Riley glowed with a beautiful radiance that enhanced her looks – her white-pink face and long dark hair, her dimpled chin and perky nose, her round cheeks. No matter what they bickered about, one look at that face would always remind Jordan that he loved her, and would do anything for her.

With clunking, uneven, heavy-footed steps, Riley made her way across the room holding Jordan’s hand for steadiness. She examined the tree from bottom to top, then looked past the tree to the window behind it.

    Oh, what’s that?

Stuck to the glass pane was a pair of dollar store gel clings decals of Santa, elves, and snowmen.

Do you like ‘em? Jordan said, I picked them up today, I thought they were fun.

Yeah, they’re fun, but… tsss… Riley breathed through her teeth, You know those things leave such a residue that’s hard to wipe off, and after Christmas we’re gonna be so busy with the baby. I can see them getting left up for weeks and months… fading, catching flies… it’s kind of gross, can you take them off?

    Aw, but…

But there were no buts. With a pregnant wife, Jordan had learned to pick his battles, and this was definitely one he was going to have to pass up. He went and peeled the gel clings off the window.

So, what’s the plan for this weekend? Jordan asked. It was now Thursday evening.

Plan for what? Riley asked. I was kind of counting on taking it easy until, you know, it’s time to push this baby out of me.

Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten, Jordan said, Sunday is my extended family Christmas swap. We still haven’t gotten a gift for the Nasty Christmas.

Come on, Riley rolled her eyes, Are we really doing that? Don’t we have more important things?

Babe, Jordan needled his wife, We can’t just bail on my family.

It’s just uncles and aunts and cousins you’re not that close with, Riley sighed, "Exchanging small kitchen appliances and chocolates. I’m really not in the mood. We’ll see the really important ones – your parents and your brothers – after the baby’s born. On Christmas."

Everyone wants to see you! Jordan urged.

They just want to rub my belly and talk about how big I am, Riley sighed, I’m not in the mood. Plus, when are we gonna get a gift, Saturday? At the mall? Pass.

I kind of already said we’d be there, Jordan said, "And uh,
