Marta Visola

Marta is a nana who learned that the very best way to teach life lessons is through a story. Her grandchildren wanted the same story over and over, so she started to write them down. It was a family joke that when the children got a bit loud and rolling around like a pile of puppies, she could whisper “Once upon a time in a far away land” and they would be instantly quiet and sitting at her feet ready for another story.

Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived the tiniest fairy moth of them all. Her name was Gingledorf.

One morning, Gingledorf was off doing her favorite morning thing, smelling the flowers. The roses were particularly fragrant and sweet smelling, so Gingledorf was taking special care to smell each and every one. It was a long and tiring job of sniffing, but she did not want any flower to have hurt feelings and think that she had ignored it.

It was all of the sniffing and special attention that caused Gingledorf to notice, with surprise, that the rose leaves were full of round holes.

As she thoughtfully scratched her head, wondering if Tiny Wee One had made the holes, she noticed something that made her stop in mid scratch.

On the nearest leaf and completely ignoring her, was a little bee. This bee was doing the strangest thing.

With her mouth, the bee was cutting a big circle in the rose leaf. When she was done, she twirled the leaf around, grabbed it over her head and then under her body and started to fly away with it.

    Curious, Gingledorf followed.

The bee flew to the side of the garage and started stuffing the leaf between the boards where there was a gap.

What in the world? Thought Gingledorf.

Gingledorf had never seen such a thing. Beatrice had never done that, and no other bee that she had ever met carried leaf pieces around or cut them with their mouths.

Back and forth the bee went, cutting, carrying and stuffing. Gingledorf sat on a rock and watched. After some time, Beatrice and Tiny Wee One joined her, and they watched together.

The little bee was getting tired. The flights to the garage were getting a bit wobbly, and Gingledorf decided that it was time to find out exactly what was going on.

    The friends politely said, AHEM.

The little bee, who had not even noticed them, bumped into the side of the garage and dropped her piece of leaf.

The friends rushed over to pick up the leaf.

The little bee explained that she was a leaf-cutter bee from the family Megachili. Her name was Karem.

She said that she was cutting leaves and making nests
