basket-page007Snow was retreating, making way for more greenery. A few lonely flowers here and there added spots of blue and yellow to the green meadows. New leaves were sprouting on the trees. Smaller streams that were dry during winter, were booming with flowing water from the melting snow. Birds were happily chirping in the trees, welcoming the warmth the season brought. Bunnies were hopping around Meadow, their home for countless generations. Among them, one bunny was collecting young, soft branches to weave into her basket to repair holes and tears from the previous year.
Esther was a brown bunny with white front paws and white fur under her tail. She had been in charge of delivering chocolate eggs to children in her basket for many years. She took pride in her responsibility and always made sure her basket looked good. This meant that every spring she would clean it, remove any broken or damaged parts, and repair them. Spring provided her with many young shoots of trees and branches to use in her repairs.
It was a lovely sunny day, already warm in the sun, but still chilly in the shade. This was perfect for Esther, as she needed the sun to dry the branches she had gathered, before using them to repair her basket. She was very careful in selecting the appropriate branches. They had to be flexible enough to be woven into her basket, yet sturdy enough not to break when carrying chocolate eggs.
01As a bunny living in Meadow, it meant she never had to worry about lunch. She had a variety of grasses to choose from when she got hungry. Her favorite was dandelion, especially its flower. After that were clovers, and then pretty much all other grasses. She did like sweeter things as well, of course, like apples and carrots. She planned to visit Mr. Bingly later to get some carrots from him. He was one of the bunnies that worked as a gardener and supplied their little community with goods like carrots.
Maggie, or Margaret for her parents, came to visit her in the afternoon. They had been friends since they were young. Maggie was always more into playing than working, which made her mother use her full name on multiple occasions. She usually tried to get her friend to join. Come on, Esther, you should have fun sometimes, too! There are baby frogs in the pond. Come check them out.
I can’t now. I’m busy getting my basket ready.
