About this ebook
Simply Ruth
Ms. Riettie as a child had an inspirational encounter that makes her believe that she is one of the up and coming next big authors. She has enjoyed writing short stories since she was of a very young age, but never published anything. Getting married and having six children she soon found out that there are so many personalities you have to cater to. There are always something to write about. It wasn't until she lost her only son to a tragic car accident that she began to write. After her children grew up and had children of their own, she adopted a small Shorkey dog, by the name of Prince. She found that some of his actions were indeed similar to those of little children. As she watched him grow from a small pup, she began to take enjoyment in the things he learned and in what he did. This inspired her to write some more. In her writing she has found that it can be a healing and learning processing for all readers, even herself. As a Christian she finds pleasure in helping those who need inner healing. She likes to make people laugh and broaden their imagination while enjoying life. Currently she resides in St. Petersburg, FL.

page%201.tifToby’s owner, Ben Jones better known as, Big Ben was growing older and was losing his eye sight. It had gotten so bad that he had to walk holding a cane and sometimes needed Toby’s help. They lived on a big ranch known to the neighbors that surrounded them as Big Ben’s Ranch. Both of Ben’s children had gotten married and moved away leaving him there with the cook, Sarah Hoffmore, and some ranch hands. His wife Thelma Lou had died some years ago, and Toby was all he had left.
Toby was a big German Shepherd, weighting over 150 pounds. As Toby laid there on the porch he began to reminisce of the times he chased the chickens, and the rest of the ranch animals making sure they were all safely tucked away in their proper places. The hen in the hen house, the chickens in the chicken coup, the horses in the stable and the pigs in the pig pen. Yep, Toby was the head man-dog as he called himself on the ranch, and he was proud of it.
Toby loved his life on the ranch, but lately he wasn’t feeling like himself. He had no energy. His bark, instead of being commanding and strong, had turned into a weak tone of woof. When he barked at the ranch animals they seemed to no longer give him the respect he once commanded. To tell you the truth he thought to himself, I have become compromising and weak, as he seemed to plead to the animals: please go to your proper places. There was no more fight in him. He found himself mostly laying out on the front porch or accompanying Ben when he tried to go somewhere.
Ever since Ben’s eyes weaken it was like the fire had gone out of him too. Toby became his seeing-eye dog; this was not what he was used to doing. He loved Ben unconditionally and missed their adventures together. How he longed to be able to run and hunt like he was used to. He knew Ben needed his help and he vowed to himself that he would never leave his side. Red Bone, his neighbor, was the Irish Setter who often accompanied Ben and Toby along with his owner, Kenny, for all of the hunting and gaming they went on. Toby was a little jealous of Red Bone because of his coat. For some reason, Toby was obsessed with Red Bones coat. He wished he had hair like that. He also thought that he could out smart Red Bones any day of the week; but then there was that time they butt heads together as they chased a fox. This heightened Toby’s urge to want to go hunting again. He had something to prove. Toby and Red Bones could be seen tumbling down the steep hill like a ball of hay after colliding into each other while chasing that fox. How embarrassed Toby was that day. He was furious with Red Bone and thought that he was trying to out-do him but he forgave him, why Red Bones was his best and only friend.
