Mike Young

Mike was born and raised in Kirkland Lake, a small northern mining town with a nearby First Nations reserve. He grew up with a love of the north, even in the midst of winter, exploring the surrounding woods with his friends, and his grandfather. He moved down south in his 20's to follow a career in quality management, but his real pleasure was still heading outside the city, with canoe and tent. While in Toronto he also developed an interest in back-alley murals, in artistic graffiti, and worked with some police there that saw its potential as a community building exercise. He'd always been a voracious reader, so several years into retirement he decided to try writing, and hasn't stopped since. This is his first book, but he has several more drafts waiting in the wings.

I’d like to dedicate this Book to:

    My Wonderful Wife, Lorraine,

And to My two Great Kids,

    Michael, and Karena,

You’ve made My life worth living….

with all Your Love, and giving….

If I was to leave this World today….

Theres just one thing I want to say….

    I Love You all!!!

I was eighteen years old, just out of school….

I joined the Military, I was no fool….

Id learn a trade, or so I thought….

But they had other plans for Me, This is what I got…..

Sure I knew about the War over there….

But they won’t send Me, they wouldn’t dare….

joined up to learn a skill….

    I didn’t want to have to kill….

But thats where I went, Oh well….

I’ll do My time in this Godforsaken Hell….

Than I’ll go back and hopefully….

learn a trade that will help Me….

Was I scared? You better believe….

Couldn’t wait for My turn to leave….

Well I left alright, in a body bag….

With My name on a tag…..

    It happened so fast, I didn’t feel a thing….

Now I’m thinking of the tears this will bring….

My Family and friends will all gather to see….

A Flag draped Coffin that will carry Me….

And They will put Me down….

In the Veterans Cemetery, at the edge of town….

Not really where I wanted to be….

At this young age, through eternity….

    I never got to learn a trade….

    But I don’t regret the choice I made…..

I died helping to keep My Family free…..

And that My Friend, is good enough for Me…..

Written By Mike Young U.S. Navy Vet

Sometimes I would stand on deck at night….

with only the stars and Moon in sight….

and look out over the darkened Sea…

and think about places I would rather be….

At Home with My Girl, and My Friends….

And wondering will these four years ever end….

To be Home again cruising the streets….

Instead of being here in this fleet….

An empty feeling stays in My chest….

    I miss Home, I must confess….

This is the hardest part, You know….

The months at Sea, the Heartache, You cant show….

At night is the worst time….

    Loneliness creeps through Your mind….

So You go back down to Your rack….

Shower, Shave, time to hit the sack….

But first You need to write a letter…

Hopefully that will make You feel better….

So You write and tell of things You’ve done….

Working on Ship, going on liberty for fun….

    Nine months We’ll be gone….

    Man thats so long….

But You get through it day by day….

And in the end You look back and say….

Those cruises, they weren’t so bad…..

Talk about all the fun You had….

Its easy to say, when its all behind You….

Well guess what? few months, another one You will do….

until Your time is finally through….

Than You’ll go home to the life You once knew….

But nothing will be the same again….

You’ve lost touch with all Your Friends….

And You’ve grown up, You seem older now….

You don’t know why, You don’t know how….

Thats what the service does to You….

You’ve changed for the better, We all do….

And now as years gone by, You feel….

That time at sea was no big deal….

But don’t forget those nights on deck….

leaning the rail, Your Heart a wreck….

    But still deep down inside…..

You wish You could go back, for one more ride….
