About this ebook

Dundee is situated beside a broad estuary of the River Tay surrounded by hills and farmland. The Tay road and rail bridges over the estuary provide a striking introduction to the city: you round a bend, and suddenly, the city is spread out before you in a wide panorama.

The city is dominated by the basalt plug of an extinct volcano called Dundee Law. If you climb the 571 feet, you will be rewarded with fantastic views of the city and its surroundings.

Dundee is south-facing and is Scotland's sunniest city. The climate is mild, and snowfalls are rare.

The SAT-Pack (Sexual Attack and Torture Pack) continue to strike in Dundee, and Liebs role keeps him in the thick of it. Marcus and Graces personal arrangement sees her partnered with Senior Inspector Adam McAdam as the detectives involved on the case.

But this pack is dangerous, and eventually, Marcus and Lieb find themselves discussing their personal tragedies in a hospital waiting room, waiting to see if their loved one survives.

Viktoria King

Viktoria King comes from another Perth, the one in Australia, but with a family connection to Scotland. Well-bitten by the travel bug, she's been travelling since 1988, and an opportunity to live and work in Singapore then the UK and Canada gave her every chance to travel regularly. Six years living in England provided her the opportunity to explore and connect to her Scottish homeland, so she feels it right to base her fictional characters there. Her husband is her travel companion, and their son James is the photo on the covers.

The Sat Pack - Viktoria King

    CHAPTER 1

S enior Constable John Addams approached Grace’s desk at Tayside Police, and when she looked up, John looked over to Adam McAdam to ensure he was paying atten tion.

‘I have a nurse, Bernadette Macdougall, who wants a word with you,’ John said to Grace. ‘She says it’s to do with the SAT Pack case.’

‘Why not Adam? He’s the senior,’ Grace responded.

‘She insisted it was you, said it was female stuff. And she wanted a private word,’ John added.

Grace looked at Adam, and he nodded. Grace was his partner, so he saw no reason for her not to take point on some things.

Grace and Adam stood, and Grace said to John, ‘Can you bring her to the interview room please, John?’

Adam moved away and quietly entered the viewing room attached to interview room 2. Grace met the nurse at the door of interview 2 and, noticing how distressed the nurse appeared, asked her if she needed water.

The nurse just nodded, so Grace opened the door to the interview room and said quietly, ‘Wait in here. I’ll get some water and be straight back.’

Again the nurse just nodded and, keeping her eyes downcast, walked into the room and sat down. Grace observed her for a moment, then closed the door and went for water.

Seated back in front of the nurse, Grace started, ‘Nurse Macdougall, is it?’

The nurse nodded, and just as Grace wondered how she was going to get anything useful from her, the nurse added, ‘Bernadette.’

‘OK, Bernadette. Senior Constable tells me you asked to speak with me. What about?’

‘I saw you at the hospital, speaking with Mona Harrison about the assault,’ Bernadette started; it was Grace’s turn to nod. Bernadette continued, ‘This is very hard for me. I’ve never shared this story with anyone. It’s just—I think I know who one of the attackers is.’

Bernadette looked imploringly at Grace, and Grace just reached out and put a hand on Bernadette’s forearm and nodded encouragement. ‘I need to tell it all so you’ll fully understand my information, but the telling is going to be difficult, embarrassing even. It can’t get out, especially back to the hospital. I couldn’t work there if they knew.’

‘Well, so long as it’s not information of a criminal undertaking, that should be no problem.’ Grace continued to support Bernadette, the hand on her forearm gently stroking and offering comfort and encouragement. Bernadette looked at her for a long time, and then with a shuddering breath, she started.

‘We were only nineteen, Sandy and I, student nurses at Ninewells. It was a new time for us, away from our parents’ homes but like at a boarding school somewhat. Being a student nurse was like being on two extreme spectrums. When we were in the quarters, there was always a senior nurse making sure we behaved. And when we were on the wards, we were always supervised. But on our days off, we had freedom and we had our own money and we had a list of experiences we just had to try. Sandy met a guy in a pub on Perth Road, and she thought he was so sophisticated.’ Bernadette stopped talking; she was wringing a handkerchief and struggling with the memories.

Eventually, she lifted her eyes and looked at Grace; Grace could see the memories engraved in the soft tissues around Bernadette’s eyes, giving her a tormented look. Grace just gave her an encouraging smile and nodded, prompting her to go on.

Bernadette took a deep breath that shuddered across her constricted chest and wheezed from her throat. ‘I’m not homosexual, and neither is Sandy, but we did really enjoy each other’s company. Then when this guy took an interest in Sandy, I came along like a special option. I’ve never spoken of this for years. I was trying to convince myself it was just a movie.’ Bernadette then got back to her story. ‘He had a room over the pub, and after we drank and chatted—flirted, I guess—he invited us upstairs. We were so eager—well, Sandy was. It made us feel so grown up.

‘He gave Sandy a lip gloss in a little tub and would rub it on to her lips and then kiss her so passionately she often had swollen lips for days after. And it used to get her so horny, but then he’d encourage the two of us to get down to it. And we would strip naked and kiss and touch and play with each other, and he would just watch. And he would cackle.

‘After a while, he would strip off and lie on the bed and touch us—Sandy mainly. He’d screw her with his fingers and his mouth. She would holler her pleasure, and that used to get me even hornier. I don’t know what was in the lip gloss, but we could go on for hours—some drug, I suspect. We used to call it our pot of gold.’

‘How long did you meet with this man?’ Grace asked.

‘Four months,’ Bernadette explained. ‘It seemed we couldn’t get enough. And it wasn’t just touching and oral sex. He did screw us too—well, Sandy mostly. Even he got to a point where he needed it all. Oftentimes, it was doggy style, with Sandy on her knees and him pumping her from behind and me on my back sucking and nibbling on her nipples.

‘Sometimes when she was absolutely spent but I was still begging for more, he used to screw me too. But I had to be horny as hell cos I didn’t exactly like him. He scared me. It was that cackle. And that’s what caught my attention at the hospital—Mona’s description of that cackle. There’s more. Do you want to know it?’

Grace nodded, knowing the telling was cathartic for Bernadette.

‘After a few weeks of just using his lip gloss, he introduced Sandy to a liquid which he put in a shooter with gin for her. She told me it burned through her like wildfire and put her in a heaven she never believed possible. She said it heightened her sexual response and also her stamina.’

‘What happened to this man?’ Grace asked.

Bernadette became agitated again and dropped her head. ‘You won’t divulge this information, will you?’ she asked, her voice clearly displaying her agitation.

‘Not the details, but maybe the edges where the puzzle meets other pieces,’ Grace answered truthfully.

Bernadette nodded, paused, and continued, ‘We met with him regularly over the autumn months, August to January. The itinerary was much the same. We’d meet at the pub after shift, drink laced gin shooters, then go upstairs, and have an orgy for hours. Sometimes it would
