Chapter one
I can kill her for you.
The words rolled out of Richard Jenkins’ mouth casually, as if he had just offered to walk my dog. I took my eyes off the road for a second to glance at his face, searching for a sign that he was joking about murdering my wife. He seemed serious. It was so surreal, like I had walked right into a Hitchcock movie.
You don’t really mean that,
I said.
Oh, I certainly do.
Why?
I was curious to understand how his mind worked, this man whom I had only known a few hours.
Umm … because I’m a very helpful person?
My eyes were glued to the road, but I sensed his lips breaking into a smile. To tell you the truth, I love killing people. I wouldn’t pass up an opportunity like this.
My stomach took a lurch. He was kidding, right? Being stuck in a car with a deranged murderer was the stuff nightmares were made of.
I … I don’t get it. What do you mean you love killing people? You have killed before?
"Oh, several times. But see, the thing is, I can’t just go around offing random people. There has to be a compelling reason, and based on what you’ve been telling me about your wife, the world would be a much better place without her. You, my friend, would be so much happier without her."
I had shot my mouth off again — an hour-long rant about why I hated Nancy. And my companion had concluded that I wanted her dead. What was I thinking pouring my heart out to a stranger? I stole a glance at the clock on the dash — three more hours till we reached our destination. Maybe I could shake him off there. Worst case scenario, I would have to tolerate him until we landed in San Francisco.
Mine was one of several flights that had been canceled due to poor weather in Denver. I had found a flight to get back home from Albuquerque and had been lucky enough to snag a rental car to get me there. Jenkins had been sitting next to me at the gate and we had chatted a bit. When he learned about the backup flight, he had booked it too, and had asked if he could join me in the rental. I had agreed.
Maybe I hate her. That doesn’t mean I want her dead.
You sure about that? You’re telling me you never thought of wrapping your hands around her neck and squeezing, or grabbing a kitchen knife and running it across her throat? Ever fantasize about grabbing a shotgun and blowing her head off?
It was like the guy had
