    Introduction

Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. So fire went out from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. And Moses said to Aaron, This is what the LORD spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.’ So Aaron held his peace. (Leviticus 10:1–3 NKJV)

Do you believe that the standards of God regarding his people have changed over the last few thousands of years? Or perhaps his expectations of those who are called by his name have been modified to accommodate modern civilization? Unless God has changed, the same requirement stands firm forever. In Malachi 3:6 (NIV) he says, I the LORD do not change. God still must be regarded as holy, and he still wants all the glory. Nadab and Abihu were sons of Aaron and served as priests in the house of God. These were men who handled God’s day-to-day affairs on earth. But one day they got ahead of themselves and did something outside of God’s command to them, which resulted in their deaths. Just like Nadab and Abihu, you and I are called to handle God’s day-to-day business on earth. One day you and I will hear the words, Time’s up. Are you ready to face God? Are you prepared to leave this world behind without any regrets? It does not matter whether you have accomplished all the things in life that you wanted to do. Nor does it matter if you have not done all the things you intended to do for God. What matters is how you have spent your time here on earth after you gave your life to Jesus.

Right now we spend most of our time living like Nadab and Abihu did (on that one fateful day), assuming that how we do things is always the right way to do it. As Christians, there are many things we continually do that are contrary to the word of God. In Mark 12:31, we are told to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Do we? Ephesians 6:12 says our fight is not against flesh and blood. Who are you fighting against? In Hebrew 13:5, we are to keep our lives free from the love of money and to be content with what we have. Are we? How about not judging others by their outward appearance (John 7:24)? In 1 John 2:15 we are asked not to love this world. Do we? Then there are the things we do base on traditions that may or may not have anything to do with God. These are traditions like wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day, coloring eggs for Easter, or decorating a tree at Christmastime, or even things not associated with holidays, like washing our hands before each meal. Not that any of these things are bad in themselves. The problem is we tend to keep up a tradition, just because it has always been done this way. Most of them we do not know how they got started in the first place (Luke 11:37–38). Once Jesus was invited to a Pharisee’s home for dinner and did not wash his hands before eating. The Pharisee was astonished by the fact the Jesus did not first wash his hands. Jesus said in Matthew 15:20 (NIV), These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them. Jesus came to set us free from the traditions of men.

Do you know that there is nothing traditional about God? He alone is the standard, the Creator of the universe. Therefore, nothing has been passed down to him. God has no forefathers; he is the forerunner of life. Thank God for his grace, lest we would be consumed as Aaron’s sons were. As believers in Christ, we must find out what God expects from us. Without wavering or compromising what we believe, let us enter into a relationship with God that will last for all eternity.

This book, Conditioning My Spirit, is written to the one who no longer wants to assume that they are in right standing with God, but to understand why they are in such a privileged position. It is about setting the reset button of your life in Christ and starting all over again. It expounds on how to turn your heart to God and live your life on earth as a new creature in an earthly body. It was written to teach us how to stop praying worthless prayers and to know without a doubt God is listening to us. Let’s face it; it is not enough to call ourselves Christians and attend church, for it has lured many of us into a deep spiritual coma. We somehow think that as long as we hold on to his name, we can offer worthless sacrifices like Nadab and Abihu.

The most powerful part of a person is his or her spirit when it has become alive. It is often neglected and pushed aside to satisfy the flesh. Matthew 5:14 (NIV) says, You are the light of the world. If we choose to forsake our spirit man within, then the light inside of us cannot shine as God intended it to do. Therefore, the good that God would have us to do will get lost in all the wrong we find ourselves involved in. Sadly, most of the things God would have us to do are never realized because we fail to follow his lead in our lives.

To operate in the earth as a spiritual being sometimes requires us to forfeit our hopes and dreams that center around our earthly desires. As new creatures in Christ, we have an obligation to answer God’s call and stay on the pathway he has chosen for us. We cannot simultaneously be red hot for God while pursuing our earthly desires. Abandoning yourself to the one who died for your sins means you are to think less of the things of this world as being your true
