Acknowledgments
W hat triggered the writing of this book was the exhortation that I experienced by several of my friends. Their arguments and their urging me to disseminate my thoughts and my advice on aging gave me incentive and purpose. I thank them for that.
A considerable part of my research and writing was done in a very unusual environment: in the huge and quiet library of Queen Mary 2 during a two-week cruise to the Caribbean. I greatly appreciate the opportunity I was given to couple my intense and taxing intellectual work with the relaxation of a sea voyage.
The Internet too deserves an acknowledgment for the help it provided for my research.
I also I like to express my appreciation to Jo Ann Gambale for her counsel on legal matters and to Helen Daman for her editorial help. Helen went meticulously, line by line, through my drafts and made important remarks and valuable suggestions.
But above all, I am deeply grateful to my wonderful wife, Gabriele, for her support and encouragement and for graciously tolerating my frequent and lengthy periods of being incommunicado.

What is my se cret?
Having anticipated the bewilderment and the expected curiosity, I had decided, in lieu of giving the customary speech for the occasion, to do something unusual and unique—to reveal my secret
!
After I blew the candles of my huge birthday cake, I climbed on the stage, grabbed the microphone from the lectern, and following some greetings and introductory remarks, I disclosed
