About this ebook

Historically, the need for religion for guidance to promote moral ethical values under the concept of a sole Creator has been established by all the followers of the Holy Books. The Qur'an, which is a continuation as a reformed authentic book, has been either ignored to be comprehended with its meanings or misinterpreted for personal motives by its preachers. Therefore, due to the ignorance of the Qur'anic Abrahamic monotheist concept, various sects, extreme groups, and confrontations have been triggered among the Muslims and rival religious groups. As the present century is based on science and technology, intellectuals and truth seekers judge religious values from logical and scientific perspectives.

It is a dire necessity in the present era to present Divine knowledge with fundamental concepts and clear misconceptions about Islam with reasoning to attract adolescents and the ignorant toward peace through the Qur'anic treasure of knowledge. Therefore, my presentation of the book, based on these criteria, is about the psychology of religion, basic concepts, and historical aspects for revealing Divine guidance through the Qur'an to Muhammad (PBUH) with his role as Prophet to address the various aspects of human nature.

As a student of psychology with experience of observing human beings and current human destruction under religious disputes, I have tried to present all of this according to set scientific standards and tools. It has been written objectively in simple English narration with sole reference to the Qur'an to create insight among laypeople, particularly the adolescents (new generation), towards peace, unity and a balanced life pattern leading to human respect and tolerance in an emerging capitalist society.

    Preface

E VEN if nothing can come out of nothing, we are still left with believing either in a preexisting Creator and Sustainer of the Universes and of all that is contained in them, or in a preexisting ethereal energy that has evolved into all that we have at present. In both cases, the process has taken the same length of time, which is estimated to be zillions of years. In former case, it all has been a process of creation and then its evolution as planned and programmed. In the latter case, everything has depended on chance developments and, in the case of living beings, under the rule of natural selection and survival of the fittest.

SINCE we are anyway expected to be honest, modest, kind and generous, whether because of society's demand, by the country's law or in obedience to God's guidance, it would be better to connect to God everyday by praying, to stay charged. Even if it happens to be a placebo effect, it would provide us with hope, a sense of belonging and prevent us from falling prey to despair. Whether or not we are accountable for our actions in the Afterlife, it would be prudent to be prepared for it in case it happens to be a reality. Being able to deal with uncertainty is a sign of maturity. It would be better for one to lay trust in God and just as well accumulate the points for one's performed righteous deeds.

SINCE faith goes beyond reason, it would be vital to build it on a strong foundation, on evidence as reliable as an axiom. The Holy Qur'an does not expect anyone to believe in God blindly. The Holy Qur'an invites everyone to learn from History, to observe and explore Nature, to ponder on one's own birth, and then to decide whether or not to believe in God. Believing in God but not believing in the Sovereignty of God is a farce. Observing God's Guidance in some and ignoring it in some other aspects of one's life is hypocrisy. Muslims do not have a separate God of their own -- the Arabic word for God is Allah.

HOLY QUR'AN provides complete guidance to lead an admirable, successful life encompassing all aspects of human life. No Qur'anic Verse abrogates any other Verse of Holy Qur'an. Allah has taken the responsibility of preserving every letter of the Qur'an. Even Prophet Muhammad (peace is upon him) has no authority to make any addition, subtraction or alteration in the Qur'anic Text or in its intended meanings. The only way to safeguard oneself from the prevailing myths about Islam and from falling into the pitfalls of distortions created in the Holy Qur'an is to study the Qur'an Word-for-Word; translations and commentaries made by the scholars of different schools of thought can be helpful in seeing which explanation fits best to the Qur'anic Text.

ACCORDING to the Holy Qur'an, we are supposed to make technological advancements, formulate pre-calculated lunar and solar calendar to fix dates and timings for use in everyday life. There is no punishment for blasphemy or apostasy, Allah wants us to observe patience despite feeling grief. Stoning to death punishment is inconsistent with the Holy Qur'an.

HUMANS are a distinct entity among all living beings. Just compare the change of lifestyle in chimpanzees and the change of lifestyle in case of human during the last five thousand years. Allah created both Adam and Eve from the same Nafs. The Holy Qur'an holds both Adam and Eve equally responsible for getting enticed and eating the forbidden fruit. Men and women have equal rights upon one another.

PURPOSE of this preface is not to quench thirst but to make the Reader feel thirsty and to get ready to set on the odyssey Dr. Shoaib Muhammad Shahid has set. Dr. Shahid is an eminent psychologist, an effective psychotherapist, an accomplished author and an eloquent speaker. People of different fields have also appreciated the Holy Qur'an from their specialty's point of view. Dr. Shahid's is a scientific contribution of Psychology in the study of the Holy Qur'an. Dr. Shahid's book is about the scientific basis of psychology (a scientific knowledge based on observation, law of causation, objective in nature with own references and terminology).

THE book contains three volumes based on logical analysis and research on human nature, origin of the universe, psychology of religions and history of mankind, prophets' role as human guides on all human affairs by meeting the challenges of all the critiques, and adolescents' present day psychological issues which need directions from the Qur'an.

THE author has provided logical data about various human social aspects of human beings by addressing the current deterioration in Muslim Ummah like Bidaha, terrorism, insufficient women's rights, outdated teachings and practices, mis-information created by certain Mullah/Imams in the masses, and craze for power in the Muslim world (Analysis & Resolution). Dr. Shahid has done a laborious job in presenting a comprehensive research about Human Nature and Related Issues Addressed in the Qur'an with Reasoning, current psychological mental health directions, socio-cultural system in the Qur'an with unique data as well as the preventive and curative measures revealed in the Qur'an about Mental Health Directions (Analysis & Solutions) preserved since 1,430 Years. THE book appears to be based on decades of professional experiences of the author about human psychology. Instead of traditional writing about faith, all the data is explained with logic and reasoning. The author has tried to present each concept supported by the holy verses of Qur'an only. He states that it is a challenge to all the present day psychologists that the Qur'an revealed 1,430 years ago by the Creator is more objective than the human (creature) psychological knowledge, as the Qur'an is authentic in nature and endorses the previous books. Dr. Shahid narrates that his goal is to cut down the sectarian versions and personal interpretations in Islam and reunite the Ummah only under one umbrella that is Allah (monotheism), the Holy Prophet (Muhammad PBUH as the human servant and Rasool) and only one Holy Book of Qur'an revealed to mankind for guidance in life.

I see that Dr. Shahid has dealt with the subject matter in an exhaustive manner and presented it in a lucid style free of technical jargon. Islamists and terrorists misunderstand or misinterpret the Qur'anic Verses. Like the Message of the Holy Qur'an, the exemplary Noble character of Prophet Muhammad (peace is upon him) is timeless. I highly recommend Dr. Shahid's book in English for the truth seekers and young generation about Qur'an as it generates insight and retrospective process for self-correction and peace in a serious reader.

    Introduction

D ealing with sensitive, deep-rooted religious aspects which involve controversial thoughts within the claimant population but also variant concepts by rival forces, demands devotion with persuasion to figure out logical factors and authentic sources. Intellectually, references should be used with more precaution if the subject concerns the linguistic and cultural affairs of a dominant religion of the world.

Keeping in view the stated variances in my long-standing quest to explore the present topic, I am internally fortified to meet my auspicious goal, which needs persuasion, patience and effort.

I was taught to read Qur'an in the Arabic language, in accordance with tradition, by my elders during my childhood period, but without any comprehension of the meanings of the verses. I remained busy in pursuit of my academic life till the completion of my post-doctoral research and training as a psychotherapist by studying different schools of thought in psychology; I was also trained in psycho-diagnostic and psychotherapeutic concepts presented by a number of renowned clinicians, analysts, social and religious scholars about the various faculties of mind and mental health services. During my 42-year career of clinical practices, teaching and training others, I have also been exposed to a variety of clients from different socio-economic classes, genders, ages, and ethnic, religious and cultural groups, which not only enhanced my knowledge and experience but also opened to me new horizons of the human nature.

In the experiences of my life, I have had the opportunity to observe the religious belief systems and practices of various ethnic and sectarian groups in Muslim countries, which are fighting against each other to keep a hold on the masses to prove that they are the only custodians of religion and follow the right path while others are to be crushed by the will of Allah (God). I have also observed political pressure groups of rich Muslim countries that are also sponsoring such sectarian groups to add rivalries and miseries by promoting extremism and terrorism among the peace-loving followers of Islam.

The younger generation and lay Muslims who lack insight and comprehension of the Qur'an are at the mercy of the disinformation of orthodox Mullahs (priests); they are turned away from religion through the defaced and unnecessarily complicated presentation of Islam. They seek easy ways and means to resolve their confusion by following non-monotheistic practices like visiting shrines and attending ceremonies of saints' anniversaries to meet the sentimental needs of religion. The mass media, internet facilities, and excessive use of cell phones have also triggered a freer social life among the sexes which was originally restrained by the fixed Islamic boundaries and privacy. Consequently, various orientations and misconceptions within Islam have emerged.

Due to their rivalry with Islam, certain non-believers have also drawn biased and negative pictures of Islam with modern media techniques against the dated methods of preaching of Islam by orthodox Mullahs/Imams.

Fortunately, just after my retirement, I have been able to recollect my energy, sources, and experiences to undertake this quest of exploring the Divine Words of Wisdom (Qur'an) with the objective tools of wisdom. This quest is to clarify the misconceptions and confrontations among the masses of various Muslims sectarian rivals about their own Islamic theme (that of peace); these fights lead to conflict in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, which is also a disgrace to the concept of Islamic peaceful living.

As I am a student of psychology and psychotherapy, my sole intent is to explore objectively the truth and to jot down the exact narrations related to the Psychological Foundation of the Qur'an in human nature, its potentials and the guidelines for His creatures within the scope of this universe, that were revealed to His chosen illiterate human 1,430 years ago in the Arab land of uncivilized tribal chiefs fighting to hold supremacy over the poor, slaves, and helpless people.

Prior to retirement, I got sufficient time to read the Qur'an with translation. I came to know that this Holy Book has more objective knowledge of humankind, sociology, human interaction, etc., than any of the scholars who have presented their ideologies based on their subjective experiences and mutual contradictions. On the other hand, the Qur'an is a fountain of knowledge with deep insights, an authentic book of psychology that has been revealed along with its references to previous holy books by Allah (God). A Muslim has strong faith that Allah is an objective, immense, and indestructible authority,

the Creator of all human beings and the whole universe.

The first time the need to explore this subject emerged within me in 1976 in an Omaha (USA) community center in a seminar as a Muslim speaker while I was presenting Islamic monotheism and its relation to other divine religions. I felt an urge to equip my faith with authentic references of the verses of the Qur'an.

The subject became more urgent to explore seriously and thoroughly when I encountered confusions over practicing Islam in the various categories of Muslims who, while living within the circle of their towns under the umbrella of Islam, are seriously involved in debating, criticizing, and destroying the peace of a settled state.

While working on assignment as foreign faculty under the HEC Pakistan, I had to confront university intellectuals in seminars related to psychology of religion, that how can a person with a basis in Freudian psychology oriented in sex (with the presumptive behaviorist taking human nature equivalent to animal) understand the human dignity to be the deputy of the Creator on this earth. I tried to satisfy the intellectuals with a humanist-existentialist perspective with rationalist approach, but I deeply felt an urge to objectively search the richest knowledge revealed to human beings for their self-awareness and correction 1,430 years ago in the Qur'an by Allah in comparison to the present century's attempts at human assumptions.

I found that human psychological findings are based on subjective in nature as it is interpreted from, social and cultural variances or standards according to time and space. For instance about a decade ago APA marked same sex sexuality as deviant behavior where as today it is taken a genuine like marital relationship. Although according to natural law of production, multiplication is based on mating within male-female pair of living species, so lesbian or gay within their group cannot produce a normal child whatever they may attempt but they hold all type of civil and legal marital rights in a civilized society and state.

    *     *     *

In order to meet my quest for the truth of pure Islamic essence with the reasoning skills of psychological knowledge, I started comprehending the Qur'an both in my native language, Urdu, and in English translations at a slow and steady pattern so I could realize the depth of the verses of the Sacred Book which is the reformed manuscript of other divine revelations. I found that the Qur'an is a treasure of knowledge based purely on logic and reasoning with observation, which is the rule of thumb in Islam. History is a reminder of the deductive analysis needed to learn and to look for self-correction.

To meet this noble goal about the above-stated complicated issues, my criterion is very simple and objective in nature. I have presented it objectively with reasoning and logic without any predisposition that I am a Muslim born in a particular sect of Islam or following it as my forefathers' religion. Secondly, my approach is based on the sole reference of Qur'an by following its verses. Indeed each surahs and every verse reveals insights into the subject of human nature. I found the relevant answers to my critics and the majority of Muslims who have created a negative picture of Islam.

I found that Allah has revealed the authenticity of the Qur'an which will not be corrupted like the previous holy books, and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is directed to preach accordingly a good model for Islamic monotheism as a motto of this Sacred Book, is narrated for guidance in V-39:27-35, And indeed We have put forth for men, in this Qur'an every kind of similitude in order that they may remember. An Arabic Qur'an, without any crookedness (therein) in order that they may avoid all evil which Allah has ordered them to avoid, fear Him and keep their duty to Him. Allah puts forth a similitude: a (slave) man belonging to many partners (like those who worship others along with Allah) disputing with one another, and a (slave) man belonging entirely to one master, (like those who worship Allah Alone). Are those two equal in comparison? All the praises and thanks are to Allah! But most of them know not. Verily, you (O Muhammad) will die and verily, they (too) will die. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be disputing before your Lord. Then, who does more wrong than one who utters a lie against Allah, and denies the truth [this Qur'an, the Prophet (Muhammad), the Islamic Monotheism, the Resurrection and the reward or punishment according to good or evil deeds] when it comes to him! Is there not in Hell an abode for the disbelievers? And he (Muhammad) who has brought the truth (this Qur'an and Islamic Monotheism) and (those who) believed therein (i.e. the true believers of Islamic Monotheism), those are Al- Muttaqun (the pious and righteous persons. They shall have all that they will desire with their Lord. That is the reward of Muhsinun (good-doers.). So that Allah may remit from them the evil of what they did and give them the reward, according to the best of what they used to do

The Surah narrates the reasons for revealing the Qur'an to mankind for developing insight. Human beings are reminded that life is not just for pleasure, but to also follow the commands of the Creator to get positive rewards. As a continuation of the messages of previous holy books, the Qur'an reveals the reinforcement system of rebirth for correction. Allah revealed the importance of the Qur'an and that the human nature is selfish as humans avoid the duty to follow the Almighty Creator who will reward only the obedient who thank Him for His blessings, in V-39:1-9, The revelation of this Book (the Qur'an) is from Allah, the All-Mighty, and the All-Wise. Verily, We have sent down the Book to you (O Muhammad) in truth: So worship Allah (Alone) by doing religious deeds sincerely for Allah's sake only, (and not to show-off, and not to set up rivals with Him in worship). Surely, the religion (i.e. the worship and the obedience) is for Allah only. And those who take Auliya' (protectors and helpers) besides Him (say): We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allah. Verily, Allah will judge between them concerning that wherein they differ. Truly, Allah guides not him who is a liar, and a disbeliever. Had Allah willed to take a son (or offspring or children); He could have chosen whom He pleased out of those whom He created. But glory be to Him! (He is above such things). He is Allah, the One, and the Irresistible. He has created the heavens and the earth with truth. He makes the night to go in the day and makes the day to go in the night. And He has subjected the sun and the moon. Each running (on a fixed course) for an appointed term. Verily, He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving. He created you (all) from a single person (Adam); then made from him his wife [Hawwa' (Eve)]. And He has sent down for you of cattle eight pairs (of the sheep, two, male and female; of the goats, two, male and female; of the oxen, two, male and female; and of the camels, two, male and female). He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation in three veils of darkness; such is Allah your Lord. His is the kingdom, La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). How then are you turned away? If you disbelieve, then verily, Allah is not in need of you, He likes not disbelief for His slaves. And if you are grateful (by being believers), He is pleased therewith for you. No bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, so He will inform you what you used to do. Verily, He is the All-Knower of that which is in (men's) breasts. And when some hurt touches man, he cries to his Lord (Allah Alone), turning to Him in repentance, but when He bestows a favour upon him from Himself, he forgets that for which he cried for before, and he sets up rivals to Allah, in order to mislead others from His Path. Say: Take pleasure in your disbelief for a while: surely, you are (one) of the dwellers of the Fire! Is one who is obedient to Allah, prostrating himself or standing (in prayer) during the hours of the night, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the Mercy of his Lord (like one who disbelieves)? Say:Are those who know equal to those who know not? It is only men of understanding who will remember

While studying the devotion to faith in Muslims from the psychoanalytical observation and analysis, it appears that most contemporary Muslims are sentimental, reactive in nature, lack knowledge and patience, and focus on the interpretations of unprofessional sources which derail them. Unfortunately, they are ignorant of the true basis of Islam due to lack of knowledge of the Guidebook (Qur'an) in a foreign language. Under worldly pursuits, instead of getting insight by comprehending this Divine Book, or devotedly pursuing and performing obligatory practices, they seek short and easy ways in the religion, so they have become blindly dependent on their semi-educated religious guides who have harmed them with non-monotheistic rituals, sectarian and politically-oriented debates, etc.

During interactions with religious authorities, I was shocked that the majority of the population has no awareness of the meanings of the Qur'an, having variance in its translations from the original Arabic or the local pamphlets by renowned scholars of various sects and doctrines. Mostly due to lack of time or interest in the precise aspects of Islam, their religious values are based on hearsay of elders with exaggerated picture of the Prophet or a favorite deceased saints. Almost each individual living on the same street has a religious agenda based on sectarian philosophies; bitter rivalry of the opponent groups is propagated to disgrace them or to appease the followers on loud speakers, particularly in Friday sermons.

It is observed that the semi-educated Mullahs/Imams of religious centers, shrine custodians and descendents of Pirs/Faqirs proclaim themselves a chosen class with power over the fate of the followers. Here, all types of ceremonies, processions, ritual celebrations, and superstitions are in practice. This ceremonial culture, without involving the obligatory Islamic practices, is introduced to attract the masses as a part of the religion. These guides are ignorant of the sayings of the Qur'an, and have a strong hold over the rural, poor, and deprived population looking for easy divine support or miracles. This population contributes their hard-earned, saved incomes to meet the needs of these agents of the corrupt administration who use religion as a tool for their earnings and reputation in the masses. The traditional healers also hold a position in rural semi-educated population for the treatment of various psychological disorders like hysteria, anxiety disorders and schizophrenia based on the assumption of witchcraft and control of evil spirits and jinns.

Moderately religious families, which observe and practice Islamic monotheism as well as obligatory practices, fluently and regularly recite the Qur'an, finishing it more than twice monthly. They colorfully celebrate the ceremony of completing the Qur'an reading in the early childhood and are accustomed to reading the Qur'an but when asked about the meanings of the verses or prayers, are ignorant and state that it is a foreign language and their job is to follow the spirit of the elders. They share that one is deeply touched with mental peace and healings while listening to well-recited surahs of the Qur'an with translation.

When I asked my colleagues and senior students to join me in correcting the new trend in the innocent people, they warned me not to open the Pandora box as they would be in trouble because of the deep impact on social and political circles. They suggested that the only solution is to have authentic literature and support of the media to break the psychological hold on the sentimental masses. So in order to achieve understanding of the precise concepts presented in the Qur'an, since 2006, I have been repeatedly studying the Qur'an and its translation both in English and my native Urdu languages. I have found the answers within the Qur'an to the above-mentioned misunderstandings -- along with their solutions -- when Muslims are confronting various oppositional forces within their own community and globally.

    *     *     *

An answer to all the above-narrated Islamic issues is precisely given in the Qur'an. The great miracle of the Qur'an is that it was revealed 1,430 years ago to an uneducated chosen person (Muhammad PBUH) of Allah, has challenged humankind with reason, and no one can change it. It has attested the previous holy books but unlike other holy books which have been altered by people, it is still in its original shape (Arabic) and contains rich treasure of knowledge by creating insight at a layman's level with examples about the origin of universe, creation of human beings with the natural traits, rise and fall of various nations with guidelines to pass a balance meaningful life, and the end result of the deeds by visual details of the Day of Judgment, a fair accountability process, groups of individual who will be placed in paradise and hell which are beyond the imagination of an individual. It is presented in V-39: 49-52,"When harm touches man, he calls to Us (for help), then when We have (rescued him from that harm and) changed it into a favour from Us, he says: Only because of knowledge (that I possess) I obtained it. Nay, it is only a trial, but most of them know not! Verily, those before them said it, yet (all) that they had earned availed them not. So, the evil results of that which they earned overtook them. And those who did wrong of these [people to whom you (Muhammad) have been sent], will also be overtaken by the evil results (torment) for that which they earned, and they will never be able to escape. Do they not know that Allah enlarges the provision for whom He wills, and straitens it (for whom He wills). Verily, in this are signs for the folk who believe!"

I found out certain solutions to the present day Islamic issues as well as the mental health principles and misconceptions of the non-believers by conducting a meaningful study of the Qur'an. Keeping in view the human nature, they are warned to follow the commands of the Creator against their self-assumptions; therefore, He sent prophets with His messages but the people ignored the monotheism which is the right path that will be awarded. Allah precisely and strictly warns even the last Prophet to follow it as no one will rescue the culprits from hellfire if they refuse to follow Allah. It is revealed in V-30:10-20, Say (O Muhammad): O My slaves who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism), be afraid of your Lord (Allah) and keep your duty to Him. Good is (the reward) for those who do good in this world, and Allah's earth is spacious (so if you cannot worship Allah at a place, then go to another)! Only those who are patient shall receive their rewards in full, without reckoning. Say (O Muhammad): Verily, I am commanded to worship Allah (Alone) by obeying Him and doing religious deeds sincerely for Allah's sake only and not to show off, and not to set up rivals with Him in worship; And I am commanded (this) in order that I may be the first of those who submit themselves to Allah (in Islam) as Muslims. Say (O Muhammad): Verily, if I disobey my Lord, I am afraid of the torment of a great Day. Say (O Muhammad) Allah Alone I worship by doing religious deeds sincerely for His sake only and not to show-off, and not to set up rivals with Him in worship. So worship what you like besides Him. Say (O Muhammad): The losers are those who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Verily, that will be a manifest loss! They shall have coverings of Fire, above them and covering (of Fire) beneath them; with this Allah does frighten His slaves: O My slaves therefore fear Me! Those who avoid At-Taghut (false deities) by not worshipping them and turn to Allah in repentance, for them are glad tidings; so announce the good news to My slaves, Those who listen to the Word [good advice La ilaha ill-Allah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah) and Islamic Monotheism, etc.] and follow the best thereof (i.e. worship Allah Alone, repent to Him and avoid Taghut, etc.) those are (the ones) whom Allah has guided and those are men of understanding. Is, then one against whom the Word of punishment justified (equal to the one who avoids evil). Will you (O
