    CHAPTER ONE

Ryan Keller somberly stared out of his bedroom window and into the cosmic glory of the evening sky. The stars glowed luminously and splendidly. He couldn’t help but have a feeling of déjà vu. Ryan did this every evening for as long as he could remember but tonight had a special significance. Tonight marked exactly one year since Ryan and Liam left Stonebrook. They both went home but they also had very different definitions of what home was. For Ryan, it was a house with his family. For Liam, it was a faraway dimension incomprehensible to the human thought process. They were two beings from very different worlds with very different cosmic make-up. In spite of their differences, they both had so much in common.

Ryan reflected back on his time at Stonebrook with Liam. He remembered how they both felt so out of place and how they both yearned to fit in. In Liam’s sake, it was for survival. For Ryan, it was just to be accepted for who he was. Ryan knew he was different from most kids. He also understood why other kids kept their distance from him. It still hurt, though. Despite Ryan’s mostly introverted personality, he still wanted to make friends. He didn’t want to feel so alone all of the time but that’s just how it was. When Liam arrived, all of that changed. It truly felt like a genuine friendship. Ryan felt a bond with Liam unlike with any human he had ever met. It was ironic too. Liam wasn’t even human. He was also incapable of having any emotional capacity. Nevertheless, Ryan still felt that connection. He even remembered what Liam said to him before he left.

I’m sad to be leaving you too… Friend

It was with those words that Ryan recognized he changed something in Liam. With all of Liam’s incredible abilities and supernatural attributes, Ryan still managed to teach him something. He taught Liam how to feel. Because of him, Liam learned something new. Liam learned how to be human. Ryan felt accomplished because of it.

For whatever reason, Ryan had it in the back of his mind that Liam would come back one day. Ryan understood that Liam only came to his dimension to hide from the dark forces that were after him. But maybe, just maybe, Liam recognized a friendship with Ryan as well. Maybe Liam missed him too? Tonight was the one year anniversary of his departure. It would make the most sense for Liam to come tonight Ryan thought. Ryan pondered this idea further and realized it sounded silly. Time and milestones didn’t exist where Liam was from. Liam could read minds, but from another dimension? Did he even have a thought process like we do? Based on everything Ryan learned about Liam, the answer would be a definitive no. Ryan sighed but continued looking out of his window regardless. He did this every night. At the very least, the view of the stars were nice to look at. If Ryan wasn’t gazing toward the sky from his bedroom, he would be outside, looking at them through his telescope. That hadn’t changed. Ryan virtually had the same interests as he did a year ago. Although, that didn’t mean there weren’t some changes. As a matter of fact, a lot went down shortly after Liam left. A lot of information that still haunted Ryan to this day. Ryan took a deep breath through his nose and begin to reflect back on that fateful night at Stonebrook. After Liam left.

Everyone was still in Stonebrook’s parking lot. Ryan remembered Liam telling him that he wasn’t alone. Molly and Tony were standing behind him. Debbie and Rory walked back over to Ms. Kami and the rest of the kids. Jamal was with Casey in the back of the ambulance. The three paramedics and two police officers who were present at the time, gazed up to the sky with awe. A bright, blinding light illuminated the sky. Within seconds, it completely vanished. There were so many emotions, so many tears. Ryan sniffled and took a moment to collect himself. He kneeled back down to where Liam had been laying. Tears slowly streamed from his emerald green eyes. He continued to stare at the ground. Molly and Tony had a hand on each side of Ryan’s shoulder. It was the only comfort they could offer at the moment. They too, were still in deep shock and very emotional by everything that had just occurred. Ryan finally muttered.

    I can’t believe he’s gone.

Molly kneeled down beside Ryan to give him a hug. She softly whispered in his ear.

But he isn’t… You saved him.

Ryan hugged her back and smiled a little bit. Molly was right. Liam wasn’t gone. He just returned to be with his kind. In a sense, it was the same exact thing Ryan was doing tomorrow. Going back with his family. Or in a relative term, his kind. He stood up with Molly, holding both of her hands in his. He looked into her bright green eyes, similar to his own and smiled.

You always know exactly what to say to make me feel better.

    Molly blushed.

    Well it’s true.

Ryan smiled again and gave Molly a peck on the lips. She blushed a little bit and smiled back. Tony interrupted in a boisterous tone.

O-M-G… Okay you two. Between almost dying, Liam leaving, and the whole sappy romantic kiss at the end of all the crazy drama, it’s starting to feel like a Lifetime movie up in this bitch.

Ryan and Molly giggled. They were both happy to see Tony making jokes again. After tonight, they could really use the laughs. Debbie walked up to them.

    How are you guys doing?

Ryan smiled and looked at Molly and Tony. They both nodded at Ryan, subliminally suggesting that they were alright. Ryan flashed Debbie a soft smile.

We’re okay Miss Debbie. How is Mr. Casey?

Debbie let out a deep breath.

He’ll be alright. It’s a really deep laceration, though. He’s going to need to go to the hospital and get stiches.

Ryan nodded. He was so thankful Casey was alright. If Casey hadn’t intervened as quickly as he did when the bear was on top of Liam, there is no telling what would’ve happened. Ryan responded.

Good. I mean, good that he’ll be alright. He saved the day.

Debbie smiled. She appreciated Casey’s courageousness and bravery. After everything that happened tonight, and almost losing Casey, Debbie started realizing her feelings for him. Perhaps there could be a future for them. Debbie tried shaking off her feelings. She felt it was inappropriate to be having these thoughts right now. Right now, she had to make sure these kids were okay. That was her number one priority. She told Ryan.

He wasn’t the only one who saved the day.

    Ryan smiled. Debbie continued.

I want to thank you, Ryan. What you did was incredibly stupid, but also very brave. I don’t know where we’d be without you.

Ryan blushed. Molly and Tony smiled and patted Ryan’s back. Ryan replied.

Yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking. I just had to do something. I’m just glad it worked.

    Debbie smiled.

    Me too.

One of the police officers walked over to Debbie. He was a short, burly man. His partner remained by the car, talking to someone over dispatch. The police officer had a notepad out. He didn’t know what to make of the situation but noticed that Debbie seemed the most collected out of everybody. He reached out his hand.

    Hello. I’m Officer Brandt.

    Debbie shook his hand.

Good evening mister Brandt. Debbie Malone.

Officer Brandt looked over at the group of kids with Ms. Kami and then refocused his attention back to Debbie.

Um, clearly everyone is quite upset right now, but if it’s possible, I’d like to get a statement from you.

    Debbie nodded.

Of course. But if you don’t mind, could you give me a couple of moments to be with my kids?

    Officer Brandt nodded.

    Absolutely. Whenever you’re ready.

Officer Brandt started walking back over to his partner. Debbie looked at Ryan, Molly and Tony.

Will you three come with me to join the rest of the group?

All three nodded and followed Debbie to join the rest of the kids. Ms. Kami was very quiet. She seemed to be in shock. Tia was quiet as well. Andy and Byron were still in tears. They ran up to hug Debbie. She smiled and appreciated their affection. Jesse sat on the sidewalk curb with his head in his hands. Ryan walked over to him. He sat down next to Jesse and put his hand on his back.

Look Jess, I know you hate me but-

Jesse hugged Ryan, putting him in a slight shock. He begin to tear up a little.

Keller… You saved my life dude. I owe you so much.

Ryan felt overwhelmed by Jesse’s gratitude. He had never seen this side of him before.

It’s okay Jesse. You don’t owe me anything.

Jesse stayed quiet and squeezed his grip. Ryan could feel Jesse’s tear drops falling on his shoulder. Finally, Jesse let go. He wiped his eyes and continued.

I was such an asshole to you. I’m sorry for everything.

    Ryan smiled.

It’s okay Jesse. I forgive you.

Jesse forced a smile through his distraught expression.

Debbie comforted Byron and Andy a bit before walking over to Ms. Kami. Byron, Andy and Rory remained by her side. Ms. Kami was slightly trembling and staring at the ground. It was abundantly clear that Ms. Kami was still in a state of shock. Although they never saw eye to eye, Debbie would never, in a million years, wish this type of emotional trauma on anyone. Debbie rubbed the side of Ms. Kami’s arm.

    Are you okay?

Ms. Kami shook her head. She slowly muttered.

    No, not really.

    It’s going to be okay.

Ms. Kami slowly shook her head. After a brief moment she finally lifted her head to look Debbie in the eyes.

    Look Deb, I’m sorry… For… You know.

Debbie continued rubbing the side of Ms. Kami’s arm.

    It’s fine. Really.

    Ms. Kami shook her head.

No. It isn’t. I could’ve gotten you killed. I had no idea-

    Debbie interrupted.

Kami, it’s okay. Really. You didn’t know.

Yeah, well. I mean, I’ll be honest Deb. It was kind of personal. I never really liked you and I was just being a-

    Debbie interrupted again.

Kami stop. Whatever the reason may have been, it doesn’t matter. We’re both okay. We both made it.

Ms. Kami nodded and cracked a small smile. It was the most comfortable Debbie had seen her all night.

True. Thanks Debbie. Maybe we can be friends now? If, you want to be.

Debbie smiled and hugged Ms. Kami.

Of course Kami. I would appreciate that.

Tia walked over to both of them.

Ms. Kami I’m sorry for earlier. I-.

Ms. Kami didn’t let Tia finish speaking. Instead, she pulled her in for a group hug. At that moment, there were no words to really say in the situation. Everyone just wanted to feel a sense of comfort. Jamal walked over. Debbie let go of Tia and Ms. Kami. She asked him.

    How’s he doing Jamal?

    Jamal sighed.

He’s still out cold, but uh, the paramedics said he’d be alright. They about to take him to the hospital.

    Debbie nodded.

And how about you? How are you holding up?

Shit, I don’t know. Okay I guess. My back kinda hurts.

    Would you like medical treatment?

    Jamal shook his head.

Nah, it’s cool. Just some Tylenol, maybe.

    Debbie nodded.

Of course. I’m just going to go speak with the paramedics very quick and I’ll go get you some.

    Jamal nodded. Byron interjected.

Can we come too Ms. Debbie?

    Debbie nodded.

    Of course.

Jamal nodded. Debbie looked at Tia and Ms. Kami. They both gave Debbie a soft smile before she walked with Byron, Andy and Rory toward the ambulance.

Jamal looked over to Ryan. He was still sitting with Jesse. Molly and Tony were sitting next to Ryan on the other side. Jamal approached them.

    Yall okay?

They all nodded. Ryan said to Jamal.

    Yeah. How about you?

    I’m alright.

    Ryan smiled.

That’s good. Man, you hit that bear really hard.

    Jamal chuckled.

Not as hard as he hit me.

Everyone let out a small laugh.

Debbie and the boys arrived at the ambulance. The backdoor was already closed and two of the paramedics were talking. Debbie asked with concern.

Any idea on when he’ll wake up?

    One of the paramedics responded.

"Not sure, but we’re going to run some tests. See if he has a concussion or any brain damage.

Hearing the words ‘brain damage’ sent shivers down Debbie’s spine. Andy and Byron seemed stunned by this revelation as well. Rory didn’t understand. It just made him sad to see Casey like this. He frowned. Debbie tried remaining optimistic.

    Well, let’s hope not.

Both the paramedics nodded. Debbie asked.

May I ask which hospital you are taking him to?

    The other paramedic responded.

    Belmont.

    Debbie nodded.

Alright. I’ll be down to see him later.

    The first paramedic asked.

    Are you his wife?

    Debbie smirked.

No, just a co-worker and friend.

Well, here’s some advice. If you want to see him, I suggest you tell them you’re his wife or a family member. Otherwise, they may not let you see him.

    Debbie nodded in agreement.

    Understood.

    The second paramedic responded.

Alright, well. We’re going to take off now. Are you sure you don’t want us to send out more medics?

    Debbie shook her head.

No, it’s okay. Everyone is just a bit shaken up right now, but we’ll be alright.

    The second paramedic nodded.

Alright, well. If anything changes, you know how to reach us.

    Of course.

The second paramedic looked to the first one.

    Alright. Let’s move out.

The first paramedic nodded and both men got back into the ambulance. The engine started and Debbie started to think about the worst case scenario for Casey and teared up a little. Byron looked up at her.

    You okay Ms. Debbie?

Debbie nodded and rubbed the top of Byron’s head. She forced a smile.

    Yeah. I’m fine.

Byron and Andy both hugged Ms. Debbie. Rory followed suit. Now, her smile was a real one. Debbie loved these kids. They always knew how to make her feel better even when she was going through a hard time. The ambulance took off. Officer Brandt made his way back toward Debbie.

Are you ready to give a statement now?

    Debbie slowly nodded.

Yeah. I think so. If it’s alright, I’d like to have Ryan with me. He’s just as, if not more involved in this than anybody.

Officer Brandt seemed confused. He still had no idea what was going on and dispatch gave him little insight. When Debbie made the initial call, all she said was that people were injured and something crazy happened. Debbie didn’t go into specifics over the phone. She knew better. If she tried to explain anything over the phone, it would’ve probably been disregarded as a prank call.

Debbie was glad the officers arrived as the massive light filled the sky. There was no way they could deny witnessing it. And it served as a small amount of evidence for the claims she was about to make. Either way, whether or not Officer Brandt believed her story, the truth had to get out there. Officer Brandt nodded at Debbie’s request to include Ryan in the statement.

Well, if you think he can shed further light on what exactly is going on around here, then absolutely.

Debbie found irony in the way Officer Brandt worded his response. She smirked a little. Officer Brandt gave her a peculiar look and she quickly went back into a more serious expression. She nodded.

    Alright. I’ll go get him.

Debbie, Byron, Andy and Rory walked back over to the rest of the group. Ryan was talking to Molly, Tony and Jesse. He stopped speaking to acknowledge Debbie’s presence.

    Hey Ms. Debbie.

Hey Ryan. If it’s alright, I’d like you to come with me so we can give a statement to Officer Brandt.

    Ryan nodded.

    Sure thing Ms. Debbie.

Debbie looked to Byron, Andy, and Rory.

"And I’d like you three to stay with Ms. Kami for a few moments.

All three boys nodded. Debbie and Ryan walked back over to Officer Brandt. He nodded at Ryan.

    Hello, you must be Ryan.

    Ryan nodded.

    Yes sir.

Alright. I’d like to ask you both a few questions.

Officer Brandt pulled out a small note book from his utility belt. Ryan appeared nervous. He wondered if Officer Brandt would even believe them. Officer Brandt continued.

Okay first, what exactly happened here?

Debbie looked at Ryan. He took a deep breath. Here goes nothing.

    Well… Liam, my roommate… He wasn’t…

Bright headlights could be seen coming up the hill, diverting Ryan’s attention. Officer Brandt looked over as well. Debbie noticed them too. She was confused as to who it could be. Officer Brandt questioned her.

    Night shift?

Debbie shook her head and looked at her phone.

No. They don’t come in for at least another hour.

The vehicle could be seen better now. It was a dark, black Hummer with tinted windows. The license plate just had two dashes on it, no numbers. It parked near Officer Brandt, headlights still on. They were very bright, blinding headlights. Debbie and Ryan found this very strange. They both looked at Officer Brandt, who also had a bewildered expression on his face. He looked at the vehicle and then back to Debbie and Ryan. He could tell they had no idea what was going on.

The Hummer remained still for a brief moment. The engine was still running and the headlights were glaring a blinding light. Finally, the engine was shut off and the headlights dimmed. Two men in stark black business suits exited the car. Despite it being dark outside, they both wore dark sunglasses with a green tint. One of the men was tall with a dark blonde crew cut. The other man was shorter and stockier with short light brown hair. In the distance, Ms. Kami and the rest of the kids were witnessing this with the same confusion as Debbie, Ryan and Officer Brandt. Alas, Officer Brandt approached the two men.

Can I help you gentlemen with something?

The taller man flashed Officer Brandt his badge and replied.

I’m Agent Smith and this is my partner, Agent Jones. What’s going on here?

Officer Brandt had been a police officer for over eighteen years and tonight was the first time he’d ever seen a badge like the one Agent Smith had. Regardless, he did not question the authenticity. He did however question why these two mysterious men were here. He responded.

I don’t quite know. I was just about to get a statement before you two pulled up.

Agent Smith glared at Officer Brandt for a brief moment. Despite wearing glasses, Officer Brandt felt as if Agent Smith’s eyes were piercing right through him. Agent Smith finally forced a smile and said to Officer Brandt.

Okay then. You may leave now. We got it from here.

Officer Brandt was flabbergasted by this claim.

    Excuse me?

I said you can leave now. We-

I know what you said. I mean, why do I have to leave?

    Agent Smith forced another smile.

With all due respect Officer, this is the kind of situation our department deals with.

Department? What department would that be?

That is none of your concern, Officer.

    Officer Brandt got defensive.

Well, what is my concern is that two local officers failed to report to this call which leads me to believe they’re missing, a man looks like he was attacked by a wild animal, these children look traumatized and-

    Agent Smith cut him off.

"Officer Brandt, control your emotions. This case is no longer of your concern. This is no longer your jurisdiction. I suggest you leave now, with your partner, or you will no longer have a career in law enforcement.

Officer Brandt seemed quite upset, but stayed quiet. Agent Smith continued.

It would be a shame to throw away an eighteen year career over something this frivolous

Officer Brandt’s eyes widened. How did this mysterious man know how long he’d been working as a police officer? He never mentioned it. Officer Brandt found this whole scenario odd but felt intimidated by Agent Smith’s threat. He huffed a little before heading back to his car. Debbie and Ryan watched him walk away. They couldn’t quite overhear what was said but were baffled by the outcome. Just exactly who were these strange men? Agent Smith approached Debbie with Agent Jones following close behind.

    Good evening. I’m Agent Smith.

Debbie felt uneasy. This man gave her a weird vibe. She didn’t know what to make of him or why Officer Brandt had to leave. Something just felt off to her. She looked at him for a few seconds before replying.

Debbie Malone. May I ask who you work for?

    Agent Smith force a smiled.

We work for a private sector of the government. We would like to know what went on here tonight.

    Ryan interjected.

Are you guys like CIA or something?

Agent Smith let out a soft chuckle. He gave a vague answer to Ryan’s question and then immediately returned his attention to Debbie.

Or something. Is there somewhere inside the building we can all talk as a group? A classroom, perhaps?

Debbie was still reluctant to talk to these men. They seemed very cold and emotionless. She still complied with their request.

Yes. Yes there is. You want to speak with all of us?

    Yes mam.

Debbie looked over at the group of kid with Ms. Kami. They all seemed ready for this night to be over. It appeared as if Rory was sleeping on the sidewalk. Debbie shook her head and then looked back at Agent Smith.

    Alright. Follow me.

    Agent Smith nodded.

When does your next shift come in?

    About an hour.

Agent Smith turned to Agent Jones.

You stay here. Anyone who comes up that hill, you turn away. Whether they work here or not.

Agent Jones nodded. Debbie wondered why anyone would have to be turned away. Then again, this was probably now an official crime scene. It did make some sense. Debbie and Ryan walked over to Ms. Kami and the group of kids. Agent Smith was close behind. She announced.

This is Agent Smith. He is going to talk to all of us about what happened here tonight.

    The kids groaned. Andy whined.

    I’m tired!

    Byron rudely stated.

Why is this fool wearing sunglasses? Ain’t no light out.

Jamal and Tony chuckled at Byron’s observation. Debbie corrected him.

Byron, don’t be rude. And Andy, we will get you to bed as soon as possible. I’m sorry, but we don’t have a choice in the matter.

Andy moaned again. Debbie looked back to Agent Smith.

    Alright. Let’s go.

The entire group walked to the side entry of Stonebrook. Andy felt nervous and scared.

Do we really have to go back in there?

Debbie rubbed Andy’s hair and spoke in a comforting tone.

It’ll be alright Andy. Just close your eyes and hold my hand. I’ll lead you.

Andy grabbed Debbie’s hand and closed his eyes.

Okay Ms. Debbie. But you better not let go.

    Debbie squeezed her grip.

    Of course I won’t.

Everyone entered through the side door and into the boys living area. Melancholy swept over the group. Clothes could be seen scattered around on the floor. Agent Smith walked past Max’s clothes. He picked up his shirt and observed it for a second. Debbie told him.

    We’ll explain that, too.

Agent Smith nodded and followed Debbie and the group through the boy’s hallway. Ryan glanced into his room as he passed by. He already missed Liam. The group walked through the double doors and through the long hallway. The door to the downstairs was already unlocked. Debbie took a deep breath before opening the door and led the group downstairs. She still had a firm grip on Andy’s hand. They all reached the classroom. Debbie entered first and turned on the light. The kids and Ms. Kami followed her inside. Agent Smith commented from behind.

I’d like everyone to take a seat.

Everyone complied with his request. Jamal ended up seating himself at the long table at the other side of the classroom. Debbie, Ryan, Molly and Tony all sat up front. Everyone seemed quite anxious and ready to get whatever this was, over with. Once everyone was seated and settled in, Agent Smith begin to speak.

Alright. Now that I have everyone’s attention. I’d like to know what happened here tonight.

All the kids and Ms. Kami started talking at once. Agent Smith quickly quieted everyone.

    One at a time, please.

Debbie raised her hand. Agent Smith addressed her.

    Yes, Ms. Malone?

I think we should let Ryan speak. He was the closest with Liam.

Ryan became nervous. He didn’t like being put in the spotlight. Especially with people he hardly knew, such as Agent Smith. Debbie looked at Ryan. He reluctantly nodded in approval. Agent Smith spoke to Ryan.

    Alright Ryan. Go ahead.

Ryan gulped. All eyes were on him now. He struggled to get the words out. Agent Smith seemed to be anxiously waiting for his response. Molly tapped him on the shoulder. He looked at her. She whispered.

    It’s okay. You got this.

That was exactly what Ryan needed. Some reinforcement and support. Molly was like his muse when it came to controlling his anxiety. Alas, Ryan stood from his seat and begin to explain the best way he knew how.

Liam… My roommate Liam. He came in about a week ago. He was my roommate. He was my best friend. But, um… He wasn’t like you and me…

Ryan paused to see if Agent Smith had anything to say. He didn’t, so Ryan continued.

Liam is from the dimension of light. His dimension is responsible for all the light we see around us. The sun, the stars, even the light in ceiling above…

Ryan pointed to the overhead fluorescent light and paused again. Agent Smith still had nothing to say and it was hard to read his expression through his sunglasses. Ryan continued.

He came to our dimension because his was in trouble. His dimension and the dimension of dark have been at war since the beginning of time. If they had gotten a hold of Liam and destroyed him, all of the light in our dimension and many others would disappear. Liam, was like, their leader. He was the source of his dimension. Or as he put it, a catalyst…

Agent Smith remained quiet. Ryan couldn’t tell if he believed him or not. He kept going.

So, he told me what he was his first night here. He needed my help to become more human like so he could blend in with us. The more people who knew, the better chance he would be discovered. He trusted me to keep his secret. And in return, I helped him fit in…

    Agent Smith finally said something.

And why couldn’t other people know?

Ryan felt a little relieved by Agent Smith’s intrigue. Although he wasn’t sure if Agent Smith was just humoring him or playing along. He wasn’t a very expressive person. Ryan continued.

He told me that our thoughts create energy. And the more people thinking the same thing, the stronger the energy becomes. The stronger the energy, the stronger the message. And the dark senses that energy. It gets the message… Or something like that… It made more sense when Liam said it.

    Agent Smith nodded.

It’s okay. I understand what you’re trying to say.

Ryan was a little shocked that Agent Smith understood what he was trying to say. He responded in a surprised tone.

    You do?

    Agent Smith nodded.

Yes. Now, please continue with your story.

    Ryan nodded.

Well, people found out anyway. We told Molly and Tony. And Ms. Debbie found out all on her own. We didn’t, well, at least, I didn’t think four people knowing was all that bad but, I guess I was wrong…

Ryan paused. He seemed to be getting a little emotional. Molly encouraged him.

It’s okay, Ryan. You’re doing great.

    Ryan nodded and continued.

The dark found us. And tonight, we were attacked. Liam almost didn’t make it. Which is why all the stars were fading in and out earlier. It’s why everything went pitch black. I mean, you noticed it too, right?

    Agent Smith nodded.

    Yes.

Ryan waited for more feedback. Agent Smith didn’t say anything else, so Ryan continued.

If it weren’t for Mr. Casey or even Rory, we wouldn’t have made it.

    Tony chimed in.

    Or you!

Ryan cracked a half smile. Agent Smith asked Ryan.

Mr. Casey? Rory? Are these people here now?

Debbie pointed at Rory, who was sitting behind her.

    This is Rory.

Rory made a big smile and waved. It immediately became clear to Agent Smith that Rory had a mental disability. Agent Smith wondered what Rory’s involvement in saving Liam could have been but found it irrelevant to his agenda. He continued.

    And Mr. Casey?

    Debbie responded.

He was taken to Belmont to treat his injuries.

    Agent Smith raised his eyebrows.

Has he spoken to anyone else about this?

    Debbie shook her head.

I don’t believe so. He was knocked out cold when they took him in.

Has anyone in this room spoken to anyone else about this?

Everyone shook their head. Agent Smith pulled out his cell phone.

    I’ll be right back.

Agent Smith exited the classroom. Debbie was bewildered by his hastiness. Ryan turned to her.

Do you think he believes me?

I’m not sure what to think of him Ryan.

Molly tapped on Ryan’s shoulder. Ryan turned to her. She smiled and said.

You did a good job of explaining everything.

    Ryan smiled.

Thanks Molly. It was so nerve wrecking trying to explain it.

I couldn’t tell at all. You did great.

Ryan smiled again. Andy whined to Debbie.

    Ms. Debbie, I’m tired!

Debbie felt bad. She wondered how long more this would take and what exactly Agent Smith’s motives were.

I know Andy. We’re almost done.

Debbie wasn’t too sure of her response. She hoped they were almost done. Jamal threw in his own two cents.

Who is this fool anyway? FBI? CIA? Men in Black?

Everyone chuckled a little bit. Debbie responded.

    I’m not sure Jamal.

    Why we even trusting him?

    I don’t know Jamal.

    Byron chimed in.

If Ms. Jill was here, she’d make him take his sunglasses off. Ms. Jill always say it’s rude to wear them inside.

    Tia responded to that comment.

Who cares what Ms. Jill say? She’s a bitch.

    Debbie scolded Tia.

    Tia! Language!

    Tia huffed.

    Like it really matters now?

    Ms. Kami also scolded Tia.

Well if you want to go back to the quiet room after we leave here, it should.

Tia rolled her eyes and didn’t say anything else. Debbie appreciated Ms. Kami having her back.

    Thanks Kami.

    Sure thing, Deb.

Agent Smith finally came back into the room. He was carrying a briefcase with him. Byron yelled out.

    Finally!

    Debbie hushed him.

    Byron, quiet.

Agent Smith ignored Byron’s outburst and set his briefcase on the teacher’s desk. He addressed everyone in a stern tone.

Okay. So this is the deal.

Agent Smith paused for a moment to make sure he had everybody’s complete attention. He continued.

No one can know what happened here tonight. Not your family, not your friends, not your co-workers. No one.

Ryan raised his hand. Agent Smith questioned him.

    Yes Ryan?

    Why can’t anyone know?

    Agent Smith explained.

What happened tonight is considered an extraterrestrial event. These types of situations are deemed extremely sensitive by the upper branches of our government. Situations like these need to be handled delicately. Releasing such sensitive information could result in dissonance and interruption to our way of life.

Debbie actually agreed with Agent Smith. At first she wanted to tell everyone. Her father, Yvonne, Ms. Josie and a few others. However the more she thought about it, the more she realized she would either be brushed off or startle people. Either way, telling others didn’t produce a good outcome in Debbie’s mind. Ryan on the other hand, couldn’t wait to tell people. Liam was the most exciting thing that had ever happened to him. Ryan couldn’t wait to tell others about his experience. So it was quite disappointing to learn he had to keep it a secret. Another thing Agent Smith said stood out to Ryan. It was when he said ‘Situations like these’ implying that something like this had happened before. Ryan asked him.

You mean there’s been other situations like this one?

That is not for discussion Ryan. Our discussion is about what happened here tonight. And that cannot be discussed with anyone else outside this room.

Jamal made a comment in a joking tone.

So what we getting in return for our silence?

    Debbie scolded him.

    Jamal!

    Jamal laughed.

    I’m only kidding Ms. Debbie.

    Agent Smith responded.

Actually, I was just getting to that.

Jamal’s eyes widened. He was really only kidding. Sort of. Debbie looked a bit surprised too. Agent Smith continued.

In exchange for your silence, and for all of the psychological trauma you’ve endured tonight, you will all be compensated one-hundred thousand dollars.

The room started buzzing with commotion. Byron yelled.

    One-hundred thousand dollars!

    Tony was ecstatic as well.

    O-M-G! No way!

Almost everyone in the room was getting excited. Kami was all smiles. Andy didn’t seem so tired anymore. Even Jesse had gone from visibly depressed to enthusiastic and talkative. Debbie couldn’t help but feel put off by all of this. While she could agree with the point about why tonight should be kept silent, she also felt that offering large amounts of money to at-risk kids was a preposterous decision. Agent Smith was trying to calm everyone down and get their attention again. It wasn’t working very well. Debbie stood up and walked to him.

Can I speak with you outside for a moment?

Agent Smith nodded and they both exited the room. It took a moment for everyone aside from Molly and Ryan, to realize they were gone. Byron made a comment.

Where did Debbie and that dude go?

Jamal chuckled a bit and responded.

Maybe she trying to negotiate to get us more money.

    Tia responded.

    Shit. That’d be nice.

Ms. Kami gave Tia a dirty look. Tia gave her an apologetic expression. Ms. Kami smirked.

You know what? I don’t even care anymore.

They both laughed and high fived. Molly was observing everyone’s comments and behavior. She turned to Ryan.

    This is crazy.

Ryan was staring off into space. He was still in shock about the being offered all that money. He didn’t know what to think. Molly snapped her fingers.

    Ryan? Ryan!

Ryan shook his head really fast. He apologized to Molly.

Sorry Molly. I guess I was in shock. Did he really say that? One-hundred thousand dollars?

Molly felt a little discouraged. She thought it was crazy how much money changes people. Just a minute ago everyone was emotionally exhausted and now, after hearing about Agent Smith’s offer, everyone was all happy again. Even at a young age, Molly realized their feelings were superficial. Molly’s aunt always raised her to believe that money wasn’t everything. To just be happy and enjoy life for what it was. At least Molly was able to apply half of what her aunt taught her in life. Until she met Ryan and Liam, Molly had a hard time being happy let alone enjoying anything else. She shook her head and said to Ryan.

    Not you too…

Ryan gave her a baffled look.

    What?

Look at everyone. Look how crazy money makes people.

Everyone seems happy. What’s the problem?

Money doesn’t buy happiness. What about everyone who died tonight? Mr. Casey being in the hospital? Does anyone care?

Ryan understood where Molly was coming from. It did seem inappropriate to be celebrating at a time like this. And as much as he wanted to celebrate too, Ryan couldn’t help but feeling a bit guilty. He apologized to Molly.

I’m sorry Molly, you’re right. It’s just a tiny bit of good news in a storm of bad news, that’s all.

    Molly smiled.

I understand Ryan. It’s just crazy how everyone is acting right now.

Ryan nodded. The room was still buzzing with excitement. It was quite loud. Everyone was talking about how they were going to spend their money. No one except for Molly and Ryan seemed to notice that Agent Smith and Debbie had been gone for a while. Ryan asked Molly.

Where do you think they went?

    Molly shrugged.

    "I have no
