    Chapter 1

This is the tale of a girl named Regan. She may look like an ordinary young adult living in New York City in 2018, but she has a secret. She has a very special gift, an extraordinary power. She has lived a lifetime of love, friendship, extreme heartbreak, and loss; she has battled through decades to unlock the truth behind her gift, to uncover the extreme power inside her. But to let you in on her secrets, we will have to go back to the beginning of her journey.

Back in 1889, in the outback of the Blue Mountains of Australia, there was a little cottage in the middle of a farm. Regan and her parents lived between a barn and a stable. Nineteen-year-old Regan was a beautiful free spirit with a big heart. She had long sandy-blonde wavy locks, pale pink skin, and gorgeous green eyes. Regan loved horses and spent most of her time on the back of one, and she worked in her father’s stable to earn a little extra money. Every morning she woke up at sunrise and went out to the stable to groom the horses, feed them, and clean out the stalls. Out of all six horses that her dad owned, Regan favoured one over all the rest. His name was Stardust, and he was sandy brown in colour.

After she finished all her chores, she would saddle up Stardust and go out on the trails for an hour or two. Then she would head back to the stables, remove his saddle, and put him back in his stall. Afterwards, she would head back inside her house, wash up for breakfast, and get ready for her day. She first helped her father around the farm, feeding the animals, milking the cows, gathering the eggs in the henhouse, and whatever else her father asked of her. She then headed back inside the house to help her mother with cleaning, preparing food, and sometimes patching clothes. But as soon as everything was done, she went straight back to the stables, saddled up Stardust, and off down the trail she would go once again, not coming back until the sun was starting to set. Regan followed this same routine every day.

One day in June, Regan awoke and jumped out of bed. The air was much cooler than usual, and she opened the window shutters and looked outside. Everything was white—the grass was white and the treetops were white as the snowflakes fell from the sky. Regan slipped her pale blue dress over her head, put a long brown coat over her shoulders, and slipped her feet into her dark brown boots. She ran outside, flinging the screen door open as she ran through the doorway. She stood out in front of her house with her arms in front of her, with the snowflakes falling into the palms of her hands, in her hair, and down her face as she spun and twirled around. She walked over to the stables in a thick bed of snow, slipping a little with each step.

At the stables, she completed all her chores and saddled up Stardust. Off they rode down the snow-filled trails, her hair flowing in the wind. Regan didn’t think before she jumped on her horse’s back. As she had never seen snow before, she was unaware of exactly how dangerous riding in the snow could be. They galloped halfway down the trail, with Stardust picking up speed, galloping faster and faster. Stardust suddenly slipped on the icy snow, and his legs went out from underneath him. As Stardust slammed to the ground, the snow flew up around him. It all happened so fast that Regan had no time to react. She fell off the horse, sending her flying head first into a tree, knocking her out cold.

A couple of hours passed, but her parents didn’t worry, as she was usually off for a while. However, after a few more hours passed, her mother started to worry. She ran outside to her husband, yelling, Regan should be back!

Her husband agreed, and the two headed down the trail. After a half-hour walk without hearing a noise, with her mother getting more and more worried and fearing the worst, they finally saw Regan lying under a tree. Her parents drew closer, her mother screaming and tears rolling down her cheeks as she saw her daughter lying there looking so peaceful. Her father was in shock, not making a sound. Her mother lifted her shoulders and wrapped her arms tightly around Regan. There was no whisper of a breath, and she couldn’t find
