This book is dedicated to my sisters, Khalan & Cheyenne, who sat and listened to me read all day and all night. I love you both!
Part One: Zane and Rebecca
Chapter One:
The sound of the screams were deafening as she ran. She had to look back. She just had to but she shouldn’t have. Mom!
she cried. Run!
There was that deafening scream that sent a chill through the girl’s soul.
Rebecca opened her eyes and sat up. She’d been dreaming of her mother. She was twenty-five years old and still having the same childhood nightmare. She thought she was over it but that was a wakeup call.
Rebecca!
Zane called out as she knocked on the door two times. That was Zane’s number. Two. She did everything twice. Everything.
I’m coming,
Rebecca said and rolled out of bed. She’d never understood how Zane knew she was awake, the girl just always knew. Rebecca pulled her curly, black hair into a ponytail slowly. She looked at herself in the mirror that was directly in front of her on the dresser, Brown eyes, full lips, round nose, brown skin, and freckles,
She said to herself. She always had to remind herself to make sure she was all there. She had this fear that she would wake up and something about her appearance would be different. She slipped on boots over her pajama bottoms and her black, leather jacket.
Zane sat on the porch, when Rebecca walked outside. The sky was grey, falling with ashes, but at least, today, it was quiet.
They killed Lulu,
Zane said flatly. Rebecca placed a cigarette in her mouth and pulled her lighter out of her jacket pocket. Those are going to kill you.
I’m sorry, Zane,
Rebecca said ignoring the death comment. Zane was petite with wavy, black hair. What made her stand out was her blue eyes and skin as dark as the night sky. She was Dominican.
I hate the way our world is now!
Zane closed her eyes, I remember a time where the world had color, the sun shined, and people were happy.
I was happy, she thought to herself but didn’t express that to Rebecca.
Yeah, well we don’t live like that anymore. The Goddess is either upset with us or she can’t reach us through all of this smoke but either way this is our life now.
Rebecca took a long drag from her cigarette.
Well I hate it!
Zane stomped her foot on the step and walked into the yard. She looked up at the sky and called to The Goddess. Why do you let us live like this?
Zane looked at the blood splatter that covered the street just outside the gates of her home. They lived on a farm. It had belonged to Zane’s father. The entire acre was surrounded by sea salt. Zane was staring, entranced at the large cross attached to the gates opening. The Hell Animals can't get in but we are trapped, Zane thought. She walked back to the porch and sat on the bottom step. She looked up again at the grey, grey sky.
Drake sat at the dining room table, sipping the animal blood. He cringed every time he swallowed. It was bitter and cold and he hated it. Dad, when are we going to have a real meal? This right here isn’t enough,
he spat.
Do not talk to your father like that, Drake,
his mother said and glared at him.
How are we the royal family and we have no food?
The revolutionaries are killing the humans for themselves and the ones we have are limited. They produce slowly unlike our kind,
his father said.
This is absurd! I am going to go find another food supply!
Drake slammed his fist on the table and stood from his seat.
Drake!
his mother growled and bared her fangs. Drake took a breath and sat back down. He was not going to get into it with his mother that night. She had a horrible temper. Thank you,
She said and stabbed her fork into the dog meat that sat in front of her.
Our people are starving, their people are dying. We are all going to perish if you don’t do something,
Drake murmured.
Be quiet and eat your dinner.
Zane sat cross-legged staring at the wall. She was thinking about before the bloodsuckers took over. She’d lived on the farm with her parents and her six brothers. She was happy then. Her father had moved across the world to build a new life in the town of Transylmania. He’d purchased land and started his own agricultural business. Zane used to run around the yard with her dog, Lou. She’d had some many adventures without ever leaving the comfort of her home. She’d been ten the last time she’d seen her family. Zane could remember the day her family was taken from her like it had happened that day. A man had been calling for someone outside…
Stay here Zane!
her father called as he and her brothers went outside to check out all the commotion. A man stood at the opening of the gate. Can we help you?
Zane’s father asked. He had a thick accent that made him hard to understand at times.
I’m starving,
the man said looking at Zane’s father. He was dirty and looked as if he hadn’t slept in days.
Well, come on in the house and we’ll get you something to eat.
the man didn’t move.
I have a lot of things,
the man pointed, do you mind helping me?
the man’s voice was dry. It sounded as if he hadn’t had water in weeks.
Alright boys, lets help the man.
Zane’s brothers nodded.
Meanwhile, Zane’s mother was in the house watching the news. Zane was staring out the window at her father.
Zane!
her mother said frantically looking to her daughter, where is everyone?
Outside.
Zane pointed. Her mother was hysterical as she ran outside. Zane followed her concerned.
Sergio!
Zane’s mother called.
Yes honey?
he replied.
"Step away from that stuff and
