I live in the ancient parish of Long Preston. It is in the North Yorkshire National Park. This book tells the story of two pigs, Amanda and friend Caroline, with lots of other characters who give the pigs help and, sometimes, hindrance along the way to discover the lost curl. It is suitable for eight- and nine-year-olds.

    CRAIG DISAPPEARS

    Gregory’s got Craig.

The news passed quickly round the village as news always does. Especially bad news. No, oh no, he can’t have. Wailed Craigs’ mother. He’s never taken a child before. She was so upset that she had to be taken forcibly from the river bank, sedated, and put to sleep.

Will he be eaten up? One child asked. If he’s not coming back, can I have his bike? Another asked, and was silenced by his mother.

No one had ever seen Gregory, just huge foot prints, leading to and from the river. Sometimes, dead lambs were found, with their heads bitten off, and hens or, at east piles of feathers. They thought Gregory must be partial to chicken, and blamed him for their destruction.

This time beside Gregory’s huge footprints were small six year old ones, in the mud beside the river. Probably Gregory will drown him first, and then eat him, someone said. That way it will be quickly over, he would not make a noise, he would not suffer.

Gregory might have a family to feed. Someone else remarked. He could have taken Craig for quite a distance before he was eaten.

But no one knew what had happened, because no one had seen anything. Nothing was known about Gregory. They were not really sure he had bitten off lambs heads, or eaten chicken. But what had?

What are we going to do about it? Said the man conducting the enquiry. Personally I think we should search the river, also we must take precautions, that this sort of thing does not happen again.

Yes yes. Everyone said. For once they were in agreement. But as usual they all had different ideas about methods.
