Brian and Shirley is a happy couple with a wonderful life. Brian has a colleague and best friend named Jim who, unlike Brian, is not happy with his wife, Sara. Brian tires to mediate the relation between Jim and Sara. Meanwhile a young, pretty employee, Kimberley, is hired and indirectly harms Jim and Sarah's relationship. She also directly harms Brian. When he is unaffected by her seduction, she hatches a plan to ruin his life. Her plan ultimately fails, but leaves Brian blind. Then, something extraordinary happens to him, which makes him dubious and confused between reality and imagination.

Author

Elia Youlesivanson

Elia Youlesivanson was born into an Assyrian family in Iran in 1963. He received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Since at a very young age, he has demonstrated a very strong passion for reading, and the discovery of Sadegh Hedayat’s Blind Owl, along with Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, triggered in Elia the desire to write. He has composed a large number of short stories, but none of them have ever been published because of his pledge to produce a unique and meaningful piece of work before committing any of his work to publication. Elia immigrated to the United States in 2006 and started working more seriously on developing and rewriting his short stories. He published his first novel, The Last First Time, which depicted a different approach to relationships and married life. His second novel, The Day Before Tomorrow, is a never-before-told love story of two lovers’ odyssey. Elia is currently working on his third novel, Ineffable, which is about an extraordinary tale of time travel.

    CHAPTER ONE

    Magnificent Love

It was a calm evening, and the sky was so yellowish. The mountains were so huge and as solid as statues. There was only a car in the winding road as if a spot on a snake. The car was a Mercedes in gray color. The car was going so fast on the empty road. The driver was Brian, a thirty-five-year-old man with gray hair and blue eyes, and he was very handsome. He looked at the passenger seat once in a while. Shirley was there. She was a very beautiful woman who had black hair and brown eyes and looked like a Hollywood star. Shirley had a habit that at all times, she was laughing; also if something went wrong, still she laughed.

    Brian called her Smiling Beauty.

Brian, who was carefully watching the road in spite of the fact that it was empty, said, I’d die to have one of your sandwiches, Shirley. You really are an amazing woman.

Brian, so you would die just for them, and nothing else?

What can I do after I would be dead for your sandwiches, be like a cat, which has nine lives?

OK, I’ll let you know when we reach the seashore, and there will be only one sandwich and nothing more, because you have just one life.

Oh, Shirley, do not be so cruel.

I am just giving you what you asked for.

OK, you are right. So what about the appetizer?

So what do you want for appetizer?

    Just a deep kiss.

Sorry, sorry, it is not on the menu.

Brian pulled over and stopped the car. Brian grabbed her waist and kissed her deeply.

Shirley said, Oh, Brian, when you kiss me, it is like you are setting me on fire.

Kissing you means like the world to me. When I kiss you, I totally forget everything—location, time, everything.

Brian started the car and drove to the seashore; they camped and ate together and walked hand in hand. Brian set up a fire, and then both sat near the fire. The reflection of the fire on their faces made them lovelier than before. Brian started to sing a song and held Shirley more closely to himself and kissed her on the forehead. One of Shirley’s habits was taking pictures, so she got her camera and took some pictures of Brian, then he took the camera and took some pictures of her. Later, they hugged each other and took two selfie pictures.

After that, they packed up and went back home. They had a two-floor house in a very calm area. When they reached home, both of them were so tired and walked shoulder to shoulder. Brian said, I cannot go upstairs. I want to sleep here.

Me too, I do not have any stamina to go up. Let’s sleep on the sofa.

    You are the softest pillow.

And you, the heaviest blanket ever.

    You are very mean.

I agree with you, I am mean, but you are meaner.

OK, whatever you say. I need a long rest on my favorite pillow for tonight and my whole life after.

They both lay near each other on the sofa.

Shirley said, Do you love me?

Brian said, No, I am just acting and waiting for the director to say ‘cut.’ What is this stupid question? It is obvious that I love you. You are the most important thing in my whole life.

Promise that you never leave me.

I’ve promised in the presence of God in church. Don’t you remember?

Why do I have such a feeling that one day you will leave me?

    Because you are mentally sick.

When I look at your eyes, your eyes are so unique, and I feel something elegant in them.

Brian circled both his arms on Shirley’s waist and pulled her so much closer to him. May I have a good-night kiss?

    Just that?

    And a little bit more.

    Only on one condition.

    And what is it?

Do not love anybody other than me.

Brian said, Shirley, love happens just one and once, and there is no repetition for it.

I love you, Brian. You are wonderful. You are the man of my dreams who came to my life.

Brian came near Shirley and put his hand on her shoulder and gently kissed her neck. And he laid her on the sofa and then kissed her lips, and then they slept near each other on the sofa.

    CHAPTER TWO

    Never Love a Stranger

The day after that, Brian entered the office, which was very vast, and there were lots of cubes. Brian worked in a firm that was in the business of import and export. Brian worked as a senior buyer. Brian went directly to his cube, sat down, and turned on his computer. Jim, Brian’s adjacent neighbor, came to his cube. Jim was a young man, twenty-five years old, had blond hair, was tall and slim, and with a friendly manner. Jim had worked there for two years; he also worked as a buyer.

    Jim said, Hi, Brian.

Hi, Little Jim, how was your weekend?

    Nothing special. What about yours?

Brian leaned back on his chair. Shirley and I had a good time. We went to the beach. It was wonderful.

    Cozy place?

    Marvelous. How is Sara?

As stupid as she always is.

Try a little more to understand her. She is your wife, but it will be your art to work it out with her.

She is a natural-born stupid. Do not compare her to Shirley. Shirley is something else. Shirley has a brilliant mind, and she understands everything, but Sara is a perfect moron.

I think you should be a little easy to her, and everything will be OK. Believe me, I know it is hard, but it is not impossible.

I do not think so. Oh, boss is coming.

Brian’s boss came to his cubicle. His name was Jack, a middle-aged man in his forties, tall and with broad shoulders. He was an unpredictable man. Sometimes he was a friend, and sometimes he knew nobody else, just himself. Brian and Jim nodded to him, and he nodded back.

Jack, in a low voice, said, Morning, Brian, how was your weekend?

Brian thought to himself. It was the first time that Jack was so friendly to him, so it meant that he needed something from him. Good, and thanks for asking, sir.

Jack turned back to Jim. And you, Jim?

Jim replied, Thank you, not bad, as usual.

Jack rubbed his chin with his hand and then cleared his throat. OK, Brian, we have a new employee, and she is going to work as a buyer for plastic parts. I interviewed her last week. I think she is talented but with not much experience. Check your e-mails. I have sent you her résumé. That empty spot is not bad for her. Jack pointed at the empty cube in front of Brian’s. Brian and Jim followed the way that Jack mentioned.

Jack continued, I know that there is no need to explain to you how to treat her and make her get ready as soon as possible. She is in my office right now, and in five minutes, I will introduce her to you.

Brian thought to himself, So it was the reason that Jack was so friendly. OK, I will do my best, but the rest is her responsibility.

Jack nodded and got back to his office, which was like a room. Brian and Jim both got back to their places and continued working. Brian opened his e-mails and quickly read the résumé. Brian closed the e-mails and opened another page for his daily jobs. Brian reviewed some of the documents about shipping and receiving. Brian got a scratch paper from his table and then wrote a number.

Brian said, Jim, what is the latest cargo of Monroe?

Jim, who was working on another project, stopped his job and started to check what Brian was asking for. Jim found the information after a few seconds.

    Jim said, 36533.

Jim, I have this one on my file. It should be something else.

Believe me. I have this one.

Let me come over. Something is wrong. Brian stood up and went to Jim’s cube. Brian said, Let me check it out.

Jim said, You do not believe me.

Brian said, Jim, my friend, it does not matter that I believe you or not. I just want to be sure that everything is right. If something happens later, all our sections will be responsible. Jim, please do not take it personally. I know that you are under pressure, and it is very hard for you to have a good concentration, but something is not right. OK, let me get this part cut from here and attach it to the other one. OK, got it?

Jim watched Brian for a second and then nodded. Jim said, OK, I agree with what you said. Do it.

Brian started to review the information. He cut some information for one file and then pasted them to the other file, and then he started to compare the information. Brian checked cell by cell, and then he found something and then said, Sir, here it is.

Jim watched amazed and came closer to the monitor and, with wide-open eyes, said, What?

Brian tapped on Jim’s shoulder and said, 37865.

Jim replied, Brian, what did I do wrong?

Brian smiled and said, You forgot to update the list of vendors.

Jim looked at Brian and shook his head. Thank you, Brian. If Jack found it—

Brian cut Jim’s talking and said, Jim, we are friends, OK? Just trust me.

In that time, Jack and the young lady came to their cubes. She was blond and very beautiful, and she had blue eyes and looked like a model. Jack showed the lady to Brian and Jim and said, Sorry for the interruption. Let me introduce Kimberly Bates. Kimberly is our new employee. This is Jim, and that one is Brian, as I told you before.

Jim looked at her and said, Hello, welcome to our team.

Kimberly watched him and replied, Hello.

Brian had a serious look on her and said, Hello, welcome aboard.

Kimberly just focused her blue eyes on Brian’s and smiled and said, It is my pleasure to work here.

Jack, who was very pleased that Brian and Jim had a good greeting to Kimberly, smiled and said, Brian, please explain to her what she needs to learn. Make her a professional buying clerk in the plastic field within forty-eight hours.

Brian looked at Kimberly and then at Jack and then said, OK, as I have said before, I will do my best.

Jack smiled again and said, OK, I have a meeting to attend, so I will be leaving. Kimberly, just know that you are in good hands.

    Kimberly nodded. Thank you, Jack.

Jack went back to his office, and Jim left for his cube. Brian just looked at Kimberly. With his hand, he showed her to sit on his chair, and then he got a chair from that empty spot and then sat near Kimberly. Brian could feel the heavy smell of her perfume, and then he said, It seems that you have just graduated. Meanwhile, you were working in a small workshop, so not much experience as a buyer.

Kimberly said with a soft voice, Not that much, just for few months. I am so inexperienced.

Brian replied, No problem. All of us at the beginning, we were like you. As they say, practice makes perfect. Just now, forget about that. As the boss said, you are supposed to work in the plastic parts field as a buyer.

Kimberly nodded and said, Yes, as a buyer. It is what Jack said.

Brian started to find some samples to show Kimberly. OK, but are you aware of what we are supposed to do here?

Kimberly said, A little bit. Jack explained it to me in the interview and also in his office.

Brian finally found some documents. OK, I think it is better to start from here. First of all, get this manual. Read chapter 4, and after lunch, Kimberly, I will explain some more details. That empty spot is yours right now. Please go ahead with reading. If you have any questions, please feel free to interrupt me anytime. OK, Kimberly?

Kimberly looked directly in Brian’s eyes and said, Please call me Kim.

Brian nodded and said, OK, Kim, as you wish.

Kimberly went to the empty spot and started to read. Brian sat on the chair and continued his job. After a while, Brian stopped what he was doing and went to Kimberly, who was reading the manual. "How
