    CHAPTER ONE

    A NEW HOME

It was the middle of August and school had just started at MIT in Massachusetts. Kya walked through the halls of the dormitory, looking at every number on every door as she searched for her new home. Finally, at the end of the hall on the third floor, was room 322. Kya put her bags down, slipped the key in the hole, opened the door, and marched in. Oh my god! I’m SO sorry! Kya yelled as she dropped her bags on the floor. She had just walked in on her new roommate having sex… with a guy. The guy jumped off the bed, quickly put on half his clothes, and ran out the door with the rest of his clothes in his hand. You’re early. The girl said as she got out of bed, obviously angry, and dressed. I didn’t know I was having a roommate. Kya said as she sat down on the empty bed across the room, staring at the naked girl. How did you know about me? Kya asked as she began unpacking some of her items. I was asked if it would be okay because I was the only one on the floor who didn’t have a roomie. My old roomie graduated last semester. Kya nodded and stood up, extending her hand in friendship. I’m Kya. Lila. Lila noticed the tattoos on Kya’s arm and didn’t even bother shaking her hand. O-kay… Are you OCD or something? No. I just don’t like freaks… Kya narrowed her eyes at the pale girl with long raven-colored hair. And what the fuck is THAT supposed to mean!? Kya yelled. You don’t have to curse, ya know! You have tattoos. You probably have body piercings, as well. You’re a freak. Well at least I’m not a slut. You must be one of those wonderful Christians my friends were telling me about… Kya rolled her eyes and sat down. And what do you mean by that!? Lila asked angrily. You’re already judging me and you don’t even know me. So let me put it to you this way princess… Since you can bring over your nasty boyfriend, I’m bringing over my gorgeous girlfriend whenever I please. Oh sweet Jesus in Heaven help me! You’re GAY!? Lila asked as she made a disgusted face. Lesbian. Kya responded simply. Whatever! And what right do you have to call ME princess when YOU’RE the one carrying around pom-poms? I’m a cheerleader for the school, moron. Let me guess… You’re an art major or something? Typical… Lila’s eyes grew wide in frustration. Now you’re insulting my studies!? Oh no! You’re going to leave! I don’t think so princess. I’ll stay just to make you miserable… Slut… Tramp! Whatever. Kya unpacked the rest of her items and went to bed early.

Kya awoke the next morning to see Lila standing over her. What the hell? Kya asked and sat up in bed. Do you HAVE to sleep naked? And why do you have to snore!? UGH! Lila whined and Kya rolled her eyes. No, I don’t have to sleep naked. I just like to. I feel free when I sleep. And I snore? Seriously? Julie never says anything about it… I don’t care what your stupid girlfriend tells you. If you bring her over, I’m going to preach to both of you about atoning for your sins of homosexuality! And what about YOUR sins for fornication before marriage? I don’t see a ring on YOUR finger. Lila got mad and stormed away and Kya laughed. You need to loosen up. We’re both adults here. How old are you anyway? That’s none of your business! I’m 22. Lila sighed. Fine… 24. Wow… And you still act ten years your junior. Does it make your boyfriend fuck you better if you act underage? Lila slapped Kya across the face. How DARE you speak to me that way!? Lila demanded. You’ve probably been screwing around since you were 15 or younger. Look bitch, you touch me one more time and I’ll kill you. You’ll go to jail. Do I look like I care if I go back to that place? Wonderful! AND you’re a criminal! I can’t take this! I went to jail for a year for false accusations. I’m sure you did. Lila rolled her eyes and began getting dressed. I had a guy try to rape me and I stabbed him for it. They thought I was trying to murder him, but it was self-defense. As soon as they got the tapes to prove my story, I was set free. Oh… Sorry. Lila said apologetically. You should be sorry. You Christians are notorious for your judgmental mouths. Maybe next time you should learn the facts before spouting shit off at me. I somewhat learned some martial arts in the slammer. Remember that next time you want to slap me or badmouth me, okay? Lila nodded and didn’t say anything else as she dressed to get ready for her day.

Lila watched as Kya got out of bed and began putting on clothes. Do you wear contacts? Lila asked. Kya half-smiled. No. Why? You have the greenest eyes I have ever seen… Uhm… Thanks, I guess. Why do you have so many tattoos? I think they’re cool. You have a nice figure… It would look so much better without them. My woman likes them, so I don’t care what you think. How often do you tan? I’ve always been pale and wanted a tan. This is natural. I’ve never tanned in my life. I’m SO jealous! Whatever. Oh, and I just remembered. I don’t have any body piercings except my ears. Yeah but they’re pierced like… ten times. So what. I like it. You don’t have to live with my body so why should you care? Thank the Lord I don’t! Yeah, and when you get pregnant, thank your God for that too. Nathan and I use protection! We have for almost a decade. See! I KNEW you were a teen slut! And what about you? You’re obviously not a virgin, either! Lila countered. I lost my virginity at 18, when I was an adult, to my girlfriend Julie that I’m still with now, thank you very much. Kya said, putting Lila in her place. Oh… Sorry… You sure do say that a lot. Stupid Christian… Keep your mouth shut since you don’t know a fucking thing about me, okay? You’re just a dumb bitch. Kya finished dressing, grabbed her books, and went to class, leaving Lila alone in the room to cry.

Lila didn’t have classes on Mondays, and prayed about the things she had said and done to her new roommate. She knew she was wrong for what she did and took great thought into what Kya had told her. Were all Christians as she described? Was she so stereotypical that everyone knew what she was all about? Lila didn’t like knowing that she had such a ruined name and wanted to change herself somehow. She didn’t know what she wanted, but she didn’t want to be that mean person that yelled at Kya earlier.

Kya walked slowly to her first class, wondering if she was too harsh on Lila. ‘Maybe I should take my own advice… I don’t know her, either. She might not be the stereotype I believe her to be. I’ll have to apologize when I get a chance.’ Kya sat through her mechanics lesson in boredom, as she already knew all about spark plugs and how to change them. She stumbled to math class and tried to pay attention, but didn’t really care. After math was history class and she fell asleep there. Finally, violin class! Shit! I forgot my violin! Kya exclaimed in frustration. Julie stared at Kya, surprised. How could you forget it!? Julie asked. Kya wasn’t the type to forget something so important. My new roommate is an asshole. She and I fought this morning and I totally forgot it! Well, I’ll let you know if my roommate ever leaves. Then you could move in with me and we’d NEVER be apart! I’d like that. Kya leaned in and kissed Julie just as the instructor was walking in. Kya… What have I told you about that? Sorry Ms. Jenkins. I couldn’t help myself. Where’s your violin? You never forget it! I’ve had a really bad morning, Ms. Jenkins… I’m sorry. Kya said with a sigh. That’s okay! You can just borrow mine. Here. Thanks! Kya smiled at Ms. Jenkins’s generosity. As always, Kya got the highest grade in class that day and on a violin that she was unfamiliar with. After class, she returned the instrument to its owner. Kya… I’ve never seen you quite so upset in my class before. Do you want to talk about it? Kya sat down, sighing softly, and Ms. Jenkins propped her arms upon her desk and leaned in to hear what Kya had to say. I just got a new roommate yesterday. She and I absolutely hate each other. We got in a fight the second I walked in the door. She’s just stressing me out. I was in such a rush to get out of there that I forgot my instrument. I’m sorry. Kya looked down at the floor, slightly embarrassed. It’s okay! I know how things can get sometimes. Remember, I was a student once, too! Just try to remember it on Wednesday, okay? Kya smiled. Okay! Thanks, Ms. Jenkins! I feel a lot better now!

Kya went back to her dorm to get some money so she and Julie could eat lunch. As soon as Kya walked in the door, Lila was standing there with her arms folded. You took it, didn’t you criminal? Kya blinked at her in surprise. Took what? My wallet! I had it last night and today it’s gone! I didn’t take it. I actually came here to get some money for lunch. If I took your fucking wallet, wouldn’t I already have the money and have no need to come back? Lila sat on her bed, frowning, still staring at Kya. Although Kya made a good point, it still didn’t tell Lila where her wallet was. Kya bent down to get her purse and saw a wallet lying beside it that wasn’t hers. She picked it up and threw it at Lila. Here’s your fucking wallet. For the second time, I’m NOT a criminal. So typical of Christians, though… Immediately blame someone for stealing something that they just misplaced. DAMN I hate your kind! Now, if you’ll excuse me, Miss Holier Than Thou, I have a lunch date. Kya grabbed her purse and walked out of the room, slamming the door behind her. Lila sighed and put her wallet in her bag, feeling like an idiot.

Kya took Julie out to eat and told her what had happened. Wow what a bitch! So where was the wallet? Julie asked. On the floor by my bed the whole time! It probably fell out of her pants when she threw them off to screw her boyfriend yesterday. Julie laughed. I just can’t believe she accused you. Is it because you’re a lesbian? She thinks I’m a freak and a criminal. Why!? Because I have tattoos, body piercings, I’ve been in jail, and I’m a lesbian. Kya said while tucking her hair behind her ear. How would she know about the whole jail mix-up? She accused me being a criminal and I told her what happened. It didn’t change her thoughts about me, though. I can’t stand her, baby. She’s going to make me go gray so early in my young life! Julie sighed softly and squeezed her lover’s hand. It’ll be alright Kya. Just hang in there. We’ll do something together all the time so you don’t get stressed out. Kya nodded and tried to enjoy her lunch.

While Kya was gone, Lila sat down on the bed, unbelieving at what she had just done. She prayed again for forgiveness of her accusations and wanted to do something to take her mind off of things. She was digging around on the floor for her binder full of sheet music so she could play her keyboard and relax. While she was searching, she found Kya’s violin and took it out to try and play it.

After lunch, Kya kissed Julie goodbye and went straight home. When she opened the door, she was furious. What the fuck are you doing with my violin!? If you fuck it up, you’ll owe me five hundred dollars, bitch! Kya snatched it away and put it back in the case. Another typical Christian attribute… NOSY! Damn! I can’t even have a normal day because of you! I think I’d rather live in a cardboard box and try going to school than live with your ass! Kya said sarcastically as she shook her head. Lila sat there with her arms folded again, trying not to cry. Why are you so mean to me? Lila asked and sniffled. Why? You’re asking ME why I’m mean to YOU!? Wake up idiot! You’re so blind that your God couldn’t heal you with all the praying in the WORLD! Get a REAL life, Lila. Get a real major. Get a real job, and get real friends so you can bug them instead of me because I’m going fucking CRAZY! Kya yelled and started pacing back and forth in the room. Lila couldn’t hold back her tears anymore and just sat on the floor and cried. Cry to your God! Tell him all the horrible things you’ve done to people you don’t know and don’t care about! Maybe I’ll get hit by a car tomorrow and die so you won’t have to worry about me anymore! Kya threw her hands up in the air in frustration and decided it would be best to stay the night at Julie’s and just walked back out the door. Kya, wait! Lila yelled, but got the door slammed in her face as she tried to follow. She called Nathan to come over and try to cheer her up, but he didn’t answer his cell phone. Lila sighed softly and picked up her sheet music binder. She set it on the music stand above her keyboard and began playing the hymns she loved so much. Music gave her no comfort today, however, as she couldn’t keep Kya out of her mind. She thought about attending church more often now so she could get back on the right path.

Kya knocked on Julie’s door. As soon as it opened, Kya walked in. I can’t stay with her, sweetie! I really can’t! She’s driving me mad! Julie and Kya sat down on the bed together and Julie gave her a back massage. It’ll be fine. You can stay with me tonight, okay? My roommate is out for a few days on a science field trip and will be back on Thursday. You can stay until then, alright? Kya nodded and eventually fell asleep from Julie’s tender caresses. She awoke a couple of hours later to see that Julie had ordered pizza and wine. You’re so awesome! I love you so much! I love you, too, Kya. Here! I made this for you. Julie handed Kya a piece of paper and Kya studied it carefully. Julie was an artist. She was an awesome drawer, but it was only a hobby, and only rarely did she sketch. The picture was of a girl with a cello smiling. I miss my cello. I’m hoping when Mom and Dad visit in a couple of weeks that they’ll bring it in the truck. It won’t fit in my tiny car. Julie smiled. I want to hear you play when you get it. I missed hearing your music. And I missed hearing yours. But I don’t play music. I wasn’t talking about instruments. Julie blushed and she and Kya took off each other’s clothes. They made love for a couple of hours and then finally ate their dinner and turned in early, holding each other close.

Lila stayed up late playing her keyboard, knowing that she had classes the next day. It was 2 AM when she finally went to sleep, only to have to wake at 6 AM to get ready for classes to start at 7:30 AM. She grabbed breakfast and quickly ran to history class, barely making it before the professor. She fell asleep in history because of the lack of sleep she had, and stayed slightly over class to write the notes down from the board. She was late for art, but the professor never seemed to mind, as long as you were serious with it.

Kya’s school days were a lot less stressful without Lila screwing up everything, and she dreaded Thursday when she needed to go back to her own dorm. Lila had been attending church as she wanted to, hoping for some enlightenment after all she had done. She wanted Kya to come back so she could show her that she changed in the few days she was away. When the door opened, Lila ran up to give Kya a hug only to find Nathan there instead. Nate? What are you doing here? I thought I’d come apologize for not coming over Monday when you called. You sounded really sad in your voicemail and I’ve been so busy until now. I wanted to check up on you babe. I’m okay now. I was just stressed out but it’s over now. Good! Because I’ve sure missed you! He picked her up and tossed her onto the bed. Nathan! What are you doing? I’ve been craving you baby girl! I’ve GOT to have some of you! Despite Lila’s protesting, Nathan kept on until Lila just gave in and let him do as he pleased with her. She was, of course, enjoying herself and didn’t even try to fight him off as he continued fucking her. Kya opened the door just as the two were having their orgasms together. Kya stood there, simply staring. So that’s how straight people do it, huh? Just screw and go? No kissing, touching, rubbing, licking or anything? You guys blow… Literally… Kya rolled her eyes and threw her stuff on the bed. Don’t you knock first!? Nathan said as he got up and covered himself. I live here, moron. I don’t have to knock. Perhaps you should have a Do Not Disturb sign on the door so I can go back to my girlfriend’s until you’re finished. You’re a lesbian? Nathan asked in surprise. Uhm… Yeah. Didn’t I make that clear when I said girlfriend? That is so hot! Nathan said with a big smile on his face and Lila slapped him. Ow! What the hell was that for!? I didn’t know your roomie was gay! Lesbian. Kya said, narrowing her eyes in disgust. Whatever! Lila and Nathan said together. Look babe, I gotta go for now. Nathan, don’t! Lila begged. This is just weird. I’ll talk to you tomorrow. Nathan ran out the door much like he did on Monday, slamming the door behind them. You screw up everything. Lila said and lay back down on the pillow, staring blankly at the ceiling. I’m not the one screwing. I just hope you guys haven’t done it in my bed. Kya said and Lila turned to face her. I promise we haven’t. Since you’re a Christian, you’re probably lying to me. I’m going to go downstairs and do laundry. Lila got out of bed and grabbed Kya’s arm. I’m not lying. You don’t have to do that. Kya turned at looked at Lila’s nakedness. Lila was indeed beautiful, but Kya smirked as she thought of something humorous to say. Aren’t you ashamed of yourself in front of me? Shall I fetch a fig leaf for you? Oh Jesus I forgot I was naked! Lila yelled as she ran and jumped back onto her bed and covered herself up. Kya laughed so hard she wanted to cry. So fucking predictable! I swear! You’re either going to kill me with anger or kill me with laughter! So… Lila began. So what? Kya asked. Did you like what you saw? You have tits. Of COURSE I liked what I saw! Him, on the other hand, made me want to puke. I’ll never understand straight people. And I’ll never understand gay people. Lesbian. Whatever! You must like that word. You use it a lot. Oh! Go do a flip or something! Lila said in frustration. Now you’re insulting me. Tell me what bones in your body you want broken and I’ll do my best to avoid them. Lila’s eyes grew wide as Kya walked over to her and cracked her knuckles. Please don’t hurt me… Lila began praying that God protect her from the crazy woman and Kya just walked away. You’re a moron… Why do I even waste my time? Kya pulled out her violin and began playing, trying to block out the thick, snobby air that nearly choked her half to death.

    CHAPTER TWO

    ROOMMATES

Lila listened to Kya’s playing and thoroughly enjoyed it, although she didn’t say anything. Her playing style sounded very sad, no matter what song she played. Lila wondered if her playing reflected her feelings of depression from living with her. After listening to Kya practice for a couple of days, Lila finally got the courage to say something. It’s beautiful. Lila said quietly. Shhh… I’m feeling the music flow through me. Kya said in a melancholy voice almost as low as a whisper. The tone of her voice made Lila want to cry. Although Lila couldn’t stand her, there was a certain charm about Kya that definitely made Lila want to be her friend. Kya… Kya sighed, stopped playing, and threw her bow across the room. What!? What is it, Lila? What is SO important that you had to keep interrupting me about it!? Lila was silent for a moment, feeling nervous all over again. Spit it out already! Kya demanded. I think you’re beautiful. Lila blurted. She bit her lip, feeling extremely embarrassed, and continued. Uhm… Rather… I think your playing is beautiful. I really enjoy listening to you play. Kya smiled. Really? I was just practicing, nothing major. Want to hear a REAL song? Lila nodded and listened as Kya picked her bow back up and played through an entire song. Lila was crying by the end and even clapped for her. Kya grinned. Why are you crying? It’s… fantastic! I’ve never heard anyone play any instrument that way before. You’re very talented. Why isn’t music your major? Because music will never take me anywhere while I know cars will be around for a good long time. Cars? Your major is cars? Kya laughed. No, silly! Mechanics! I’m majoring in mechanics so I can fix cars. Oh! Right! Do you have a minor? No. Don’t really need one. Don’t really care. Don’t need the extra stress of more classes, either. I already don’t spend enough time with Julie as it is. I don’t want even more keeping me away from her. Do you have a minor? Piano is my minor. Really? I never see you play piano. Kya said in curiosity. That’s because I practice with my keyboard. I never see that, either. It’s under my bed. Oh. Well why don’t you get it out and play something and let me hear you. Alright! Lila said excitedly as she pulled the keyboard from under her bed and switched it on. She grabbed the binder out of her bag and set it atop the music stand and began playing. Church songs? Seriously? Can’t you play something else? Kya asked in a slightly whiny tone. That’s all I’ve ever learned! Even the songs we’re learning in piano class are hymns. That sucks. Why is your minor piano anyway? Going to be a piano player at church or something? Maybe. Why? No money in that. It’s not for the money! It’s for the glory of God! If I play music in His name, He’ll provide me everything I need. Really? You really believe that if you play music for your God that He’ll give you money, food, water, shelter, clothes, and other things? Kya asked sarcastically. Yes. He will provide if I give myself unto Him completely. So if you need money for bills and pray about it, your God will magically make the money appear in your wallet? Of course! That’s a load of shit. Has it ever happened to you? No… But it has to a member of our church that I know. I’ve never needed money. Of course not… I swear… Are you naturally blonde or something? You’re an idiot. Look who’s talking! You probably only have blonde highlights just because you’re a cheerleader! Lila said, getting frustrated. Highlights? Get real. My hair is naturally strawberry blonde. I don’t put that shit in my hair. It causes brain cancer. Wait, let me guess. You think that because I’m a freak and a criminal that I dye my hair too, right? I’m outta here. Kya put her violin away and began walking out the door. Kya, please don’t go! Lila accidentally touched Kya’s breast while trying to grab her arm and blushed and quickly turned away. Tell me one good reason why I shouldn’t leave right now! Because I don’t want you to. Lila said quietly. Why not!? Kya yelled. Because I’m trying to be your friend… I just keep messing up. I’ll say. I won’t leave this time, but under one condition. Tell me. You learn a new song that’s NOT Christian. Deal. Kya sat back down and played her violin for Lila again.

Over the course of the next two weeks, Kya listened to Lila learn a couple of new songs and even tried playing along with her violin. They sounded okay together but definitely needed practice. On Friday night, the college had a home game and Kya was trying to hurry and get her uniform on. She quickly put on her makeup, fixed her hair, and tied in her ribbon. Lila? Do I look okay? Yes! You look… Perfect. Lila gazed at Kya, but Kya didn’t seem to notice. Great! Are you going to the game tonight? Kya asked in a hopeful tone. I guess so since it’s a home game. Awesome! See you there! Kya said excitedly and walked out just to see Nathan walk in. Nathan was on the football team and he was honestly one of the best players. Kya hoped he wouldn’t be too long… During the game, Kya looked for Lila and never saw her. In fact, Nathan never showed up, either. Kya knew what they were doing and it irritated her. They ended up losing their game and Kya stormed into the dorm afterwards with Julie following her just to find the two of them getting dressed. We lost the fucking game, Nathan! We could’ve used a plan or something. They read us like books! Lila, I can’t believe you ditched me like that just to fuck. You disgust me. Kya spit at them, grabbed her stuff, and walked out the door, leaving Julie standing in the dorm. Julie looked over the both of them. You two are a fine piece of work, you know that? Nathan, you’re an asshole. Lila… You’re such a bitch. How could you do that to her? I thought you two were finally getting along… You both disgust me… Julie said softly and left the room, closing the door slowly behind her. Don’t let the gay people upset you, Lila. They’re lesbians, Nathan. Whatever! Just don’t let them get to you. But Julie’s right! I told Kya I’d be there and I wasn’t. Lila said sadly as she thought about the exited look on Kya’s face when she said she’d be there. You only go to the games to see me play. No reason for you to go since I wasn’t there. I wanted to go see her cheer. I’ve never really paid her any attention. She’s captain of the squad, and I’ve never even noticed her. Wow that’s deep. I didn’t know you two had become friends so quickly. We have. Or… we’ve tried to. I just keep fucking it up. You need to leave. I need a shower. I smell like sex and dog. Now THAT’S a nice combination for thought! Nathan said with a huge grin. You’re sick Nathan! Get out! Lila yelled and pushed him off the bed. Fine, fine! I’m going! Let me dress first! Nathan finished dressing and left as he said he would, and Lila took a cold shower and cried. ‘I’m such a horrible person!’ She said to herself and let the water fall on top of her head and drip off the tips of her long, raven colored hair.

How could she blow me off like that Julie!? Kya asked. She was frustrated and hurt all at the same time. I don’t know sweetheart but you need to calm down. It’ll be alright! You could make other friends. I see plenty of people every day and I’m sure you do, too. Julie said and Kya nodded. Yeah… But it’s hard to avoid someone you see EVERY SINGLE DAY! Kya said and began pacing. I know baby. It’ll be fine! Don’t worry, okay? Would you like me to rub your shoulders? Please. If you don’t mind. Well if I minded, I wouldn’t have offered. Why don’t you take off your uniform? Kya nodded and did as she was asked. Once again, she fell asleep to Julie’s soft hands running all across her body. She awoke a couple of times during the night to find Julie naked beside her. She kissed Julie’s forehead and held her tight until the next morning.

When Kya awoke, Julie was already dressed and had breakfast made. I have to go shopping today but I’ll be home for lunch if you want to go out. Julie said as she grabbed her purse. Definitely! I’d love to take you out for lunch. You’re such an angel, Julie. You deserve more than I could ever give you. Julie blushed at Kya’s words and Kya kissed her lips. I need to go home and shower or something. Hopefully Lila won’t bother me since it’s the weekend. Julie nodded and waited for Kya to leave before shopping. When Kya got back to her dorm, she noticed that Lila was nowhere in sight. She played the violin for over an hour and finally decided to go take her shower.

    CHAPTER THREE

    DEVASTATION

While Kya was in the shower, she heard her cell phone ring and noticed it was Julie’s mother. She quickly dried her hands and answered her phone. Hey! I haven’t talked to you in forever! Kya said happily. Kya… I don’t know how to tell you this… The sound of Anne’s voice worried Kya. What happened!? What’s wrong!? Kya heard Julie’s mother burst into tears on the phone. It’s Julie. What’s wrong with Julie!? Please answer me! She was in an accident this morning. Is she okay!? What hospital is she staying at!? I’ll be there in a few minutes! Don’t bother. Why!? Is she alright!? Julie’s… Julie’s what!? TELL ME ANNE!! "Julie’s dead Kya… I’m so sorry… I know you loved my daughter and she sure as hell loved you… I have to go now.
