    Chapter 1

    O nce upon a time there was a boy and his dog. The boy’s name was Matthew and the dog’s name was Blue.

    Blue was no ordinary hound dog no sir. Matthew took Blue with him everywhere he went.

    One day when Matthew took Blue to the store. The store clerk didn’t like Blue.

    Blue was the best hound dog that was in Matthew’s whole town.

    Boy you and that cursed dog of yours are out causing trouble again. Get out of my store, said the store clerk.

    We ain’t out causing no trouble mister. My ma just sent me out here to get some flour and sugar. If I go home empty pa and I won’t get any supper, said Matthew.

    Here get those sugars and flours and get out of my store, said the store clerk.

    Matthew and his beloved dog went home with the flour and sugar.

    Matthew’s dad was outside fixing up the barn and Matthew’s mom was out on the front porch working over the butter churn.
