    PART ONE

I    was born in Kansas City, Missouri—in 1973 to my jamican parents. I have one brother and two sisters, but as far as I can recall… I haven’t seen them in years.

My street life began when i was fourteen, while living in East L.A with my Aunt Johan. Next to our apartment building was an alley, where some dreads from Kingston Jamaica run things. They called themselves the tella posse. When ever i was home, i would stand by my Aunt’s crib and watch cars go in and out of the alley, as if there was a fast food restaurant back there. As a jit i was always curious and always wanted to go in the alley, but Aunt Johan always told me not to go over there… but hey, i was never the one to listen. On my way from school one day i decided to pass through there. I wanted to discover why Aunt Johan didn’t want me over there. The first person i came across was a dark skin dread name Timo. Yoh youth mon, what yo want? he asked me. Nothing dread, i’m just passing through, i replied. What’s your name youthmon? Tony, i said."

What school you go to? Hold up dread!!, What’s up with all these mother fucking questions? He smile and said, Eassy… Top Kat, cool down yo temper mon. My name is not Top Kat dread. Ha, Ha, Ha, He started to laugh, then he said. Yea mon, as of today thats your new name, because with that attitude one day your gonna run things mon, Your gonna be on top of all these cats running around here! I hear you dread, i replied. I started to leave when he asked me if i wanted a job. Doing what? i asked him. Just stay on the front and be a lookout for tha dread mon, and i will pay you $50 dollars every evening."

DAMN!! For real dread? Yea mon, all you have to do is blow a whistle that i’ll give you whenever you see the police turning onto West Blvd,, OKAY Top Kat?"

Hell yea dread!!! For $50 dollars i’m down. Can I start working now dread? No youthmon, but i like your willingness and your attitude. So… where you live at Top Kat? Next door with my Aunt Johan, HOOO! Miss Johan is yo Auntie? Yea dread. I mon know yo auntie, she’s a hard working lady. But one thing though Kat, dont let her know nothing we talk about. I know
