Ariel Rodriguez
Meet the Author, Ariel Rodriguez. Ariel was born December 18 in a Creole family in Lake Charles, Louisiana, as Ariel Espree. She could remember everything since the age of two. Ariel has always been a bright girl with a promising future. As soon as she could talk, Ariel began singing in church and other local popular places. Ariel has lived in several states over the course of her life, but Omaha, Nebraska, since 2005 has been her home. Until the age of sixteen, Ariel was only familiar with dancing, singing, and modeling but was introduced to the world of acting and later found that was her strongest gift. Ariel was offered several acting roles but turned each one down to finish school, and started to write. At the age of twenty, she married. Her name then changed from Espree to Rodriguez, and she soon gave birth at the age of twenty-one to her daughter, Azriella Claire. Ariel is now working on her bachelor’s in women’s imaging and her master’s in OB/GYN, meanwhile writing and publishing several series, one being Legends of the Constellations. Ariel has always been a dreamer, and now she’s expressing her emotions into drama-fiction forms—and we are loving every minute of it, looking forward to reading the rest of this series and the series after the next.

CHAPTER 1
The Escape
IT’S THE BEGINNING of winter. I can smell it in the cold, crisp air. After a long run, I come to a point where on my left, there’s a cliff, and on my right, there’s a lake. Walking through water about two feet high, I am trying to get away from an angry group of people that seems to want nothing more but me dead. Trying to prepare my breath, I try relaxing to calm my nerves. I wait until the very moment their voices draw closer. Slowly I sit, praying they don’t find me, hoping for patience and strength to pace the one breath I took before pulling my body under. Can I hold my breath long enough? I’m becoming desperate for air, but I’m forcing myself to not think of anything short of survival. I can see the flashlights above. My legs are tensing. I want to give up. I’m craving the air above me. It’s funny how we think nothing of the things we cannot see. It’s when the supply is gone or limited that you actually begin to want for it—pray for it, hope for it, thirst for it. If air had no meaning before, it means a lot to me now. If only I were invisible, I’d sit in the open, smiling, while they look for me. This isn’t a fantasy—it’s real, and if I have any hopes of survival, I must contain myself or spare my last breath under theirs. I hear barking and shouting. I am afraid, with nowhere to run. I close my eyes and force myself to remain still. One move could change my life or take it away. Something falls directly next to me in the water. I wonder if they figured out where I am. Then everything goes completely silent. I open my eyes, and I see absolutely nothing. If they catch me, it must’ve been fated. I’ll move on as long as I’m able to have my last breath to myself—that’s all that matters. No more fight is left within me. I gave it all I had. I push myself up to the surface of the water to take in a breath of air. Relieved, I brush the hair from my eyes, tucking it behind my ears and wiping the water away from my face. I see no one and nothing there. Not one flashlight or crinkle in the trees; just me and the water that I nearly drowned in. Just in case someone comes back, I’ll hide in the bush that sits over the lake, standing in the branches that hover over the water. A hand grabs my shoulder.
Don’t be afraid, please don’t scream.
Before I could say her name, I hear beeping.

Constance! Constance, wake up. It’s time for school!
OK, I throw my arms up—well, just one because I’m so tired.
Constance, you missed breakfast. If I come back in here, it’ll be with a pot and a spoon.
She isn’t bluffing. Last thing I need is a headache to leave with. Forcing myself out of bed, I notice my school clothes aren’t there. Instead I have a dress, which I’ve worn about one week ago at church, and it hasn’t been washed. I can still see the gravy stain from the day I wore it.
My image is everything. I don’t like to be thrown together. We have very little money. My mom can barely supply food, but somehow we always eat. Most of us are grateful for the things we can afford to have. Mom tries her best to buy us something at least once every two months. Just yesterday she smiled widely, handing me a shopping bag with a pair or slippers inside.
So many people are intimidated by me. Could it be my outspoken personality or how beautiful I am? Who knows? I never really cared to ask. I grab the brush from my dresser, smiling at my reflection while fixing my hair, while looking over lyrics. I have a solo in my school’s upcoming play, My Conceded Daughter. Mom, I’m practicing.
She smiles. Well, hurry up before you’re late.
I start singing while getting my things prepared for school. I grab my notebook. It’s time to write a little before I leave. I write songs—love songs mainly. My wants come out in song, but my fears come out in my writing. I started writing at the age of six—so many books I hardly remember what they were about. I tried writing poetry, but it’s not for me. Too dramatic.
I started sleepwalking when I was seven, so my mom had to buckle me into bed, only because she was afraid I would hurt myself. But with my nightmares, being pinned down made it difficult to fall asleep. Now that I’m older, the buckles are gone, but the dreams… they never left.
Being awake isn’t always a pleasure either.
I’m completely misunderstood at home. I’m outspoken because I have to be. I have to defend myself every day, and it’s really tiring. Everywhere else I go,
