    CHAPTER 1

    Favoured by God

T he Bible has a record of many events that show how God dealt and related with people over many generations. One of the things that stand out is that in most cases God selected younger people when He wanted to raise someone for a special assignment like bringing revival or deliverance to His people. Some of the people God selected were even despised because of their youth and lack of experience. We notice that even in the few times that God did great things through older people, He would have started appearing to them and preparing them for the mission while they were still y oung.

One well-known story is about the young shepherd boy David who defeated a whole Philistine army by killing their arrogant giant Goliath after all the experienced soldiers (including David’s older brothers) had been running away in fear for many days. It is this David who wrote:

For you are my hope O Lord God, you are my trust from my youth. (Psalms 71:5)

This reminds me of the young man Joseph the son of Jacob, and his 11 older brothers who hated him for his amazing God-given dreams. He endured several ordeals and unjust treatments, but God was on his side. He ended up being appointed deputy to the king of Egypt and was qualified and authorised ‘to teach his elders wisdom’ (Psalms 105:22).

I am also reminded of the boy Samuel who ministered to the Lord before Eli the priest. The word of God had become rare in those days because the ageing priest had lost the vision, but at a young age Samuel began to hear the voice of God and prophecy. He later took over as prophet and ruler for the nation of Israel. The Bible said about him:

And Samuel grew and the Lord was with him and did not let any of his words fall to the ground. (1 Samuel 3:19).

We read about Esther, who is first mentioned as a simple orphaned girl under the care of her father’s uncle Mordecai. She was a beautiful girl but was one of the despised Jewish foreigners in Persia and Media at that time. Her forefathers had been brought into that land as captives. After a rapid, amazing sequence of events driven by God’s favour, she ended up a queen in that foreign land and was able to save all the Jews who were targeted for mass destruction by those who hated them. She once said:

How can I endure to see the evil that shall come upon my people? Or how can I endure to see the destruction of my countrymen? (Esther 8:6).

It is one of the most amazing stories in the Bible. But why did God choose a youthful girl to be the key player in the middle of all this drama?

I also remember the God-fearing young couple Joseph and Mary who were busy with their marriage plans when God visited them with the responsibility and privilege to bring up Jesus Christ as part of their new family. When an angel visited Mary to advise of this grand plan of God, she accepted the challenge:

And Mary said, ‘…..Let it be to me according to your word…’ (Luke 1:38).

With no prior experience about raising children, the young couple were to nurture the most important child ever born on this earth.

Timothy also comes to mind – a young man with great responsibility of stewardship over the churches in the days of Apostle Paul. Paul had to encourage him:

Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. (1 Timothy 4:12).

These are only a few of many such young characters in the Bible. There must be a reason for God’s special interest in young people. Interestingly, God did not rely on the physical strength of these people, but instead they relied completely on the help of
