About the Author
In memory of my devoted wife of sixty years,
Kathryn, who passed in her sleep
on my seventy-eighth
birthday.
Mother of our two children, Tony Marion Tripp
and Terri Kathryn Tripp.
AUTHOR’S NOTE
This book is a result of over fifty years of study and diligent systematic investigation of the Holy Scriptures. It is written in simplicity that anyone may understand. It is our prayer that the reader will come to understand who God really is. Our adoration toward him should be three-fold:
One— he is the creator of all things. The first cause of everything.
Two— he is the preserver of all things. All things are dependable upon the will and power of him.
Three— for his pleasure, all things were created.
Thou art worthy, 0 Lord, to receive glory and honor and power, for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created
(Revelation 4:11).
All scripture quotations are from the original King James translation and the spelling is as appears in the text.
Marion Tripp, DD
PRELIMINARY CONSIDERATION
Where did God come from? How long did he exist before he made the heavens? When did he create the angels? When did he create the earth?
All a great mystery!
There is no answer for these questions. We can only, by faith, take the records in the Holy Scripture that he did so. What is important is he did so. Not when he did so.
To understand, we must prayerfully study the scripture and rightly divide the word of truth. Second Timothy 2:15 states, Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth.
During the period of sixteen hundred years, from 1492 BCE to AD 100, holy men of God spoke and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. Some forty men were the writers of the scripture. By kings such as David and Solomon; by statesmen such as Daniel and Nehemiah; Ezra, a priest; and Moses, a man learned in the wisdom of Egypt, which God the Father gave him by way of revelation the book of Genesis. At Mount Sinai, God gave simple instructions as to what he demanded of them, a law,
in Hebrew tora; its root meaning is to throw
or point out
which simply means human direction.
Then there is Paul, who was learned in the Jewish law and, by revelation, is the author of the Pauline Epistles; a herdsman, Amos; a tax collector, Matthew; a physician, Luke; and fishermen, Peter, James, and John.
Of course there were the prophets: four major, fourteen minor. Keep in mind, the term major or minor; the books are not minor in a sense of being less important, nor are they later in date. The major and minor overlap in date. The name refers to length only.
Hebrews 1:1 states, God, who in sundry times and diver manners spoke in time past unto the fathers by the prophets.
Elijah and Elisha were not writing prophets, they spoke only.
The prophets did not introduce a new law; it was their function to call man back to the law given by Moses.
All these writers repeatedly claimed that they were transmitting the very Word of God. If you seriously investigate biblical evidence, you will find that their claims of divine inspiration are amply justified.
Striking evidences of divine inspiration are found in the fact that many principles of modern science are recorded as facts of nature in the Bible.
Isaiah 40:21–22 states on the roundness of the earth, Have ye not known? Have ye not heard? Hath it not been told to you from the beginning? Have ye not understood from the foundation of the earth? It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stritcheth out of the heaven as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.
Second Peter 2:17 on the law of conservation of mass energy, These are walls without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest: to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.
Ecclesiastes 1:5–7 on the atmospheric circle, The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to the place where he arose. The wind goeth toward the south, and tumeth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again, according to his curits, All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
Job 26:7–10 on the gravitational field, He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them. He holdeth back the force of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it. He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.
Of course these are not stated in the technical jargon of modern science but are in complete accord with the most modern scientific facts.
Jesus had a high evaluation of the scripture. In John 10:35, he says, The Scripture cannot be broken.
And he quotes from many parts of the scripture:
Matthew 19:4: Have ye not read that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female.
Here he accepts the account of man’s creation. In Matthew 24, he referred to the flood of Noah’s day as a universal flood. In Luke 4:25–28, he spoke of the miracles of Elijah. In Luke 17, he cited the destruction of Sodom. From Job 5, he believed the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch. In Matthew 24:15, he accepted the writing of Daniel as true prophecy.
If it was good enough for Jesus, it is good enough for me!
The true doctrine of biblical inspiration is summarized in 2 Timothy 3:16, All scripture is given by inspiration of God.
God’s plan is a progressive one; the judges knew more than the patriots, the prophets knew more than the judges, and the apostles knew more than the prophets.
The Old Testament cannot be separated from the New Testament; you cannot understand Leviticus without Hebrews or Revelation without Daniel. It all fits together like one big puzzle.
While the Bible is a revelation from God, it is not written in a supernatural or celestial language. The language is of three kinds:
Figurative is explained by content,
Symbolic either in content or somewhere else in the Bible, and
The rest should be taken literally.
When reading the Bible, you should read it as any other book. Let it say what it says. You can read it in seventy-two hours and forty minutes at pulpit rate.
Too, we must obey those parts of the scripture which we understand before we can expect to gain future understanding.
For if we be heares of the word, and not doers, he is like a man beholding his natural face in a glass. For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and forgetteth what manner of man he was. (James 1:23–24)
When you get ready to read and study the Bible, first, go to God in prayer, asking him to reveal his truths to you. Get quiet before him; let him speak to you.
We must not separate what God has joined as the Word of God and the
