Green Night Stone - Emily Qiao

    CHAPTER 1

    The Mission

I T WAS THE first Sunday of November and Greg Candiduce was eating his dinner. Greg ate his dinner slowly as he took in every word Tony Abbott, the prime minister he was working for had said about carbon tax. He was also waiting for an email to be sent for him today. Every year an email was sent for him on the first of November.

Greg had black hair and green eyes. He was short and very skinny. It was probably because he hadn’t properly slept when he was young. He was a servant of a family when he was young. He would have had a proper life if his mother hadn’t died from giving birth and his father dying from cancer not very long after that. He was very grateful of that family for taking care of him until he had got a job and could afford an apartment.

Greg was special. He had been graduated in agent school when he was twenty five years old. He had been top of the class in everything; He was very good at disguising himself, he was a really good tracker and he had great ears for eavesdropping secret conversations.

Greg was thirty one years old and he was still an agent. He had never been able to celebrate his birthday on the sixth of November because he was on a mission from the Australian Secret Intelligence Service, or the ASIS, every time. He was an agent and was responsible for anything that would do Australia harm.

A mission was sent to him to complete every year. Normally he would be able to complete them in a month or two. Occasionally it would take longer. Greg had always hoped to have challenging ones. So he had sent an email to his boss Fred Grode to plead for incredible and awesome missions.

An email popped up on his computer and he began to read it. His eyes widened as he read, taking in every detail as fast as he can.

    "Dear Mr. Candiduce,

We have a new and special mission for you as you had requested, to find the Green Night Stone.

The Green Night Stone is a very powerful stone carrying a deadly curse. It was found two thousand years ago by a peasant who was looking for leftover food in his farm. He died from drinking the Green Night liquid inside. The stone can turn people into monsters when you mutter the secret words. The stone mysteriously disappeared after the peasant died.

The stone has many abilities: it may turn kill you when you drink it, it may turn normal things into fortunes and it can give you the power to create an army of powerful deadly birds. They were first seen by an old King who called the birds Absconditus which means hidden or concealed because they were hidden inside the stone unless you call upon it. Those birds are really deadly and can only be called by the heir of stone creator. There are many more things in the stone that has not been discovered yet.

Later a thousand years ago it appeared again. An English Knight was fighting in battle and he came across it. The knight was able to use that stone and created amounts of gold and fortune. But because he turned too many things into gold a curse turned him into a golden statue as well.

We have received news about the Green Night Stone from a really reliable source. You are to go to Set Street immediately and wait for more instructions there.

    Good Day to You

    Fred Grode"

Greg dumped his dinner into the bin, went to get his travelling cloak and left his apartment. It was already dark outside. Greg chose the fastest car he had, a beautiful red car, and left for Set Street.

    CHAPTER 2

    An Explanation

H E WAS THERE within fifteen minutes. The street was empty except for a really big fluffy ginger cat sitting really straight on a bench. The moon shone brightly, lighting up the street.

He parked his car in front of the news agency and went to sit down on a bench after he heard the normal sound of his car lock up. He waited for an email or a friend to come for more information. He noticed the cat was still there. It looked as though it was staring at him.

Greg looked at his watch and realised he had been there for an hour and a half. But he continued waiting for he was prepared to believe that this was a test for his patients. He checked his email on his phone to see if he had read the email correctly. He did.

Greg had enough. He was about to turn and leave when the cat followed him. He opened the red car door and before he could drive away from Set Street the cat had jumped through the driver door and onto the driver seat.

There was a moment of silence.

    Shoo! said Greg.

Manners Mr Candiduce or I will have to tell Mr Grode that you are not ready for the mission, said the cat. Greg screamed and jumped away from the cat as if it was evil and was going to hurt him. The cat rolled his eyes.

Now if you will hop into the car I will explain everything. If you don’t remember me I will tell you my name which will refresh your memory. I am George Procery, said George.

Greg was thinking hard. The name was familiar. Then it hit him. George was his friend from agent school. Greg used to be bullied until George had helped him. Then they had become really good friends until graduation. Agent School rule number one was that everyone who studied the same school has to go to different towns so people won’t recognise you in a mission. Greg had never saw George again.

Greg sat on the driver seat and drove to his apartment.

"Where do I begin? I was sent here to complete the Green Night Stone mission. Not sure if they have told you yet, but the Green Night Stone was created by Jake Ollus, an explorer two thousand years ago from England. He travelled to Australia. Fred chose you to help me because you’re the only one in the office who had completed all the missions given. The person who gave us the source is a stealer by the name of Sam Depolanas. He was sent to search for information because we said we’ll pay his debts.

So he was there risking his life for us to steal the stone from a rich American dude who was descended from the English knight. The knight’s son found the stone in the knight’s possession before taking it to use. But every person in the family that got hold of the stone died because of the curse of the stone.

You may be asking me what the curse of the stone is. But let me tell you, Jake Ollus who created it two thousand years ago was very smart, or I would say genius. It changes every time so it won’t be suspicious. Sam succeeds in stealing and he was travelling back to Australia. But he overheard the conversation Fred and I had about the stone.

Sam wanted to pay the debt and get more money so he tried running away with the stone. Lucky we had put a tracker on Sam in case something like this happened. I went after him and Fred emailed you. I tried to stop him taking the stone for his greed but it seemed Sam already found some of its powers. I was turned into a cat.

Sam left hurriedly and I couldn’t do anything. So I sat on the bench and waited for someone to arrive. You did and now you know what happened."

    CHAPTER 3

    A Disaster

H OW DO WE destroy the curse though? asked Greg.

"We don’t destroy the curse. We destroy the stone and the curse in the stone will be gone. We need to get the stone back first. Then we travel and try and find the cave where it was made. I know it’s somewhere in Melbourne because Jake made it in Melbourne. Jake Ollus was a really crazy genius. He had built a Green Night Stone Creator and Destroyer.

The Creator was able to make many Green Night Stones with the right equipment. The Destroy was kinda like an oven which was able to burn the Green Night Stone until it was reduced to fragments. I have been doing research and we know that nobody can create another Green Night Stone without the aid of Jake Ollus even if they have the Creator with them," explained George.

They arrived at the apartment and Greg parked his car. They were just at the front door and was about to walk inside when Greg saw the door was ajar. But he was pretty sure he had locked it up.

    What the… ? gasped Greg

The room was a total chaos. Books were on the floor because the book shelves smashed. The bed on the far end of the corner was really messy with the sheets ripped. The sofa had messed up files all over it and the kitchen was a complete mess with broken glass plates and cups all around. The computer was missing and so were Greg’s backup USBs.

Looks like someone knows you are part of this mission and they have taken the computer and USB’s to give you a warning. Think Greg. Why is the computer the only thing in the house stolen? asked George.

The emails and missions are all in there. That way, whatever is sent to my email, the stealer will be able to see it because those computers were given from the office and passwords are always saved to save time, said Greg.

Exactly. Now I want you to call Fred and tell him that you will be using my email if he needs to send messages to us, said George. He scratched himself and licked his paw.

Greg knew that George was right and he called Fred.

Yo. Fred Grode speaking, said Fred who had a deep and confident voice.

Hey Fred, it’s Greg. Remember how you sent me an email earlier? Well I’m with George now. Can you sent all the emails to George’s inbox? It’ll be a lot easier now that we are together, said Greg.

"I don’t actually send the emails dude. It’s a developed thing in the ASIS office ten years ago. We say what we want in the email and the computer scans our voices then sends it to the written email in its memory. Our technology is even more new than the ones at the ASIS office in Canberra.

All the emails sent to you under my name are from me boss. You’ve got a boss obviously me and I’ve got a boss, the highest of all bosses, Jacky Tielor. For some reason he doesn’t trust anyone at all and does all the email himself.

Anyway we won’t be able to help you change the email until the mission is over. Sorry bro but I am quite busy. Good day to you." Said Fred and hung up.

Greg brushed all the files on the sofa to the floor and sat down. George jumped onto the sofa and sat next to him.

We’ll have to use your phone provided by the ASIS office now. If we can’t change the email, we’ll just have to be faster than the stealers who stole your computer. Said George, By the way is there anything new?

Greg reached for his phone in his pocket and checked.

    Nope, said Greg.

Good. It’s late. I’m sure we’ll receive some orders tomorrow. The office will be able to tell us where Sam is tomorrow. The GPS only works once a day since the last black out. Let’s get some sleep, said George.

Greg laid on the half broken bed and thought about all the things that had already happened in one night. He fell asleep and had a dream. Fred was laughing at him because he couldn’t solve the mission.

Greg was woken up by his phone’s beeping. It was still very dark. Greg checked his watch and it read four fifteen am. He checked his phone and realised it was an email from Fred (in other words Fred’s boss).

    "Dear Mr Candiduce,

We have received information from the Tracker on Sam’s body that he is currently in the Melbourne airport. We have asked people who work in the Airport where he is going. They say he is going to London in England. You must travel there this instant and stop him.

The ASIS office wish you luck.

    Good Day to You

    Fred Grode"

George who had already woken up had read the message as well.

Get the car ready bro. We are driving to the Melbourne Airport.

    CHAPTER 4

    Airport Chase

G REG AND GEORGE hurried to the airport in a cop car so they could switch on the siren and cross red lights. Greg’s apartment was really close to the airport and only required a ten minute walk. But time was precious and they had to stop Sam from taking the stone away from Melbourne. They arrived in a minute.

    George was
