    Dedication

This is for you, Grandpa Marsh, my inspiration and my daddy figure. The one who was always there for me.

I love you and miss you every day.

The Past Shouldn’t Be a Part of the Future

Hey, Mom, I’m going to Kevin’s house. Grace, did you talk to me about going over there? No, ma’am. Is there something special going on that he wants you to go to? Well, no. But is it okay if I can go? I can drive and I have a car. Grace, all right, go ahead.

She left and I walked over to the cupboard to get a coffee mug. Good morning, Gage. Good morning, my dearest wife. All set to go to work? Well, yes, why wouldn’t I be? Just asking. We left the house and took Emmett to high school. Mom, Dad, remember, seven o’clock game tonight. Emmett, we’ll be there. Now remember, Emmett, after-school driver’s test. Okay, Mom. See you guys at seven o’clock.

We got to work and Walker laughed at the two of us. What are you laughing about? Oh, nothing, but for us it is funny that you two have been unable to separate. What’s so funny about that? Your guys’ past and how you meant. Yeah, I guess it is funny. Oh Gage, someone called here asking for you. He also said he was a part of your bombing crew.

Gage looked at him and put his hand on his throat then told Walker no more. Walker understood and left it at that. Hey, Holly. Yeah, Trebet. Hannah, Kevin’s little sister, called and asked about a tournament this weekend. Oh yeah. I’ll call her back. Well, what tournament is this weekend that you didn’t tell me about, Holly? It is a karate tournament. You know, the one I took Kevin to. Oh, that tournament. What time is it? Well, it is all day. Yeah, Gage, sometime you need to talk about that bombing crew mission.

He gave me a look, and I walked out the door. I got outside and was about to leave to go talk with Hannah. Gage came up behind me and said, Holly, please don’t get mad when you hear about my past. Besides, you were there, remember? You mean the last bombing mission when I was your only fighter pilot there to help on your mission. Yes, that mission, but please don’t say anything to Walker, Trebet, and Sidney. I can’t. It is a secret. But fortunately one of the kids will find out one way or another. I know that, but no one else needs to know.

He let me get in the truck, and then I drove to Hannah’s house. Why hello, Mrs. Gonjiles. We didn’t know you were coming. That is okay, Mr. Rodeizer. I came here to talk to Hannah. Is she home? Mrs. Gonjiles, Hannah is still at school. Oh, well that is funny. At the Ranger station Trebet said she called. Yeah, that is funny. Come on in. I’ll look in her room and see if she is here. Okay. He went to her room but didn’t come out. So I pulled out my gun and walked down the hallway. I walked into her room and saw Mr. Rodeizer on the floor with blood coming out his shoulder. I walked over and asked, What happened? I don’t know. All I remember was a man with a gun and asking me a different question.

I helped him up, and we walked out to the living room. Then I asked, Like what kind of questions? He asked who was out here and what was your name. Along with what you were doing here. And what did you tell him? Not a lot. I told him what you were doing here and who was out here but not your name. You did good. I have a feeling Gage and I are going to be visited by an old friend. And who may that be, Mrs. Gonjiles? You wouldn’t know him, Mr. Rodeizer. Mrs. Gonjiles, can you pick up Kevin, Grace, and Hannah for me? Yes, but I thought my daughter drove here? She left her keys to her car in it so the guy took it. Okay, good enough.

I walked out the door and saw a guy standing next to it. Hello, Mrs. Gonjiles. What do you want, Colonel Lard? Oh nothing, just wanted to see you and ask what is going on. Is that all you wanted to do? You could have done it without hurting anybody. Who said we hurt someone? Then Mr. Rodeizer came out with a gun in hand. What in the world. Mr. Rodeizer, what is going on here? Nothing, killer. Just thought we will repay you for what you did to our bunch. How? Didn’t Colonel Lard tell you what happened after that bombing mission you went on? No, after that I left. I didn’t hear anything of what happened.

Turn around, Holly. So I turned around, then I saw for the first time after I met him that he wasn’t here to make friends. Holly, is that the truth? I don’t care if it is the truth or not. Kill her, Captain Rodeizer. That is an order. Colonel Lard, it is not my job to kill people in cold blood. Fine, I’ll do it. I looked at Rodeizer, and he read the words that were written: He would do it too. Rodeizer took his gun and put it on the ground. Mr. Rodeizer, what are you doing? Mrs. Gonjiles, I can’t kill you because of two reasons. One is you helped my daughter out of that well out there, and two, you taught my son how to defend himself. And with those two acts, I can’t shoot you.

    Colonel Lard looked at him
