    DEDICATION

I would like to dedicate this book to my daughter Kay, who was not only my inspiration, but had unwavering confidence in my ability to write her a comical story. Kay’s feelings are equaled only by my own absolute faith in her artistic talent as my illustrator, partner, and above all, my darling girl.

I would also like to thank my Gram and my little brother. Both eagerly read and critiqued the book with insight and care. My youngest daughter, Mandy, my parents, and family have all been incredibly supportive my entire life.

Thank you for all you have done! This book is an honorary tribute to all of you. You have my deepest gratitude and thanks…

    CHAPTER 1

    19274.png

    Saturday, 2:00 a.m.

    Yaawwnn! Owww… ohhh!

What is it, Ebbie? Taz whispered.

I yawned so hard I think I hurt myself. Who is calling at this hour of the night? I whined to my brother Taz.

If you could be quiet, maybe we could find out, Taz whispered. Mom’s on the phone with whoever it is….. Are you listening to me? Taz asked.

Yes, I answered petulantly, …Well kind of…. but then I yawned again, hahaaaaa.

Taz smirked, And we all know how hard it is for you to yawn and listen at the same time.

I was about to give him a piece of my mind, except I yawned again, and forgot what I wanted to say- I decided to ignore his remark and concentrate on Mom.

Concentrate, Ebbie… I said to myself, Really focus…. What is Mom saying? In the dim light I could see Mom’s face…. and speaking of dim light, I should be asleep, I thought, as another yawn crept up on me….. AaaaaaaH! I can hardly keep my eyes open. Look at that moon! Dogs are not meant to see moons! We should be asleep on our own beds with our fluffy pillows and cuddly warm quilts.

Yaaaawwwwnnn, I grumbled a little trying to clear my throat. Oh no! Mom hung up and is talking to me. Darn! I’ll just listen very carefully. Maybe I can still figure out what she’s saying….

Okay? Thank you, Ebbie girl, I’ll be back in a little bit, Mom spoke softly and quietly.

Shoot, I missed it again. Taz, what was it Mom said? I couldn’t quite hear, I mumbled.

Taz shook his head smiling, Mom got a call from Kaity. She was crying and wanted Mom to pick her up from her friend’s house. Taz spoke quietly too, and looked at me lovingly. I guess the idea of a sleep-over isn’t much fun anymore, he said.

I’m lucky, Taz tells me everything, because I am his best friend. Taz says I have pretty tan colored eyes, the same color as the tan spots over my eyes. I also have some tan fur on my feet and chest, but the rest of me is a rich shiny black color. The vet says I’m a mutt, part Doberman and part Labrador, and maybe some other stuff, but Mom says, I’m a pure bred mix.

Most people are afraid of me when I run up to them, but they don’t know they are meeting the nicest girl in the entire world….. All I ever want is for them to scratch my soft floppy ears or, better yet, give me some food, then, scratch my ears.

Speaking of food, I wonder what Kaity had for dinner tonight, and if she saved me some. Hmmm, if she’d stayed home, I would’ve gotten some of her dinner, and by now we’d both be cuddled up in her bed, safe and warm.

…Poor Kaity, she needs me with her…. I knew a sleep-over was a bad idea, I said, as I followed Taz and Mom out of the bedroom. I’m going to wait right here until they get home, I grumbled.

Yeah, but can you stay awake that long? Taz said with a laugh. Now I might have pondered that remark, but I was far too tired, and decided it would be better to take a quick nap before they got home……

    Saturday 2:02 AM

Now Mom is rushing around, throwing on some sweat pants and a jacket, and grabbing Kaity’s favorite soft warm quilt. Mom said that sleeping over at a friend’s house for the first time is a scary thing, and she was impressed that Kaity had stayed as long as she had. It wasn’t easy.

Mom always talks with me and explains whatever events are unfolding at any given time. What’s important, and if there is a decision which must be made, I always agree with my Mom. Mom had rushed off, and Dad decided to make Kaity’s bed… Well, no nap for me! In the process, he has tripped over me twice. Oh good gravy, here he comes again, and the bed is a mess. I guess I better get up and help him… But the next thing I knew, he went flying towards her closet door… crashed into it, and fell into the closet, along with the door. Owww!!! Dad had kicked my side and it hurt, and now he’s yelling at me?? It’s not my fault he’s so clumsy! Now he’s saying he about broke his neck. Hmmm, I swiveled my head from side to side. Now I hadn’t thought of that, I guess I’m lucky he hit my side and not my head or neck… I think that’s why Mom always takes care of all of us at night, instead of Dad. Mom is a little-animal-like she senses things and can see everything, even us… She said she recognizes our black outlines.

Unfortunately, Mom had decided to wash Kaity’s sheets earlier in the evening, and it’s lucky she put them in the dryer, and was planning on making
