Behind Mika's Mask - Charlayna Harris
Chapter 1
Should I get out of bed today? This was the battle I had with myself every morning before school. Why do I have to go deal with this bull anyway? Can I be home schooled, yeah that will work… . not! My mom would never let that happen just for something so superficial. I can see how that will play out in my head right now. Hey mom, I want to be home schooled because no one likes me at school. Whatever! You better get over it and carry your ass to school. Yep… . that’s what my sweet little mother would say. Well there is no need to stay in bed arguing with myself… I have to get ready for school now. I brushed my teeth, jumped in the shower and got dressed. Once I made sure my hair was done properly, I got my bags together and after grabbing my jacket I ran to the elevator.
As I began my descent to the second floor my mind went blank. It is always like this before I go to school… thoughts of the past that will not go away. It was so hard to remember the details as to why, but I knew I hated the way I looked and so I decided a long time ago to hide my face for as long as I could, or at least until my graduation. I have been told that I am a very attractive young lady but of course I don’t believe it. Hey, why am I thinking about the past at a time like this? After shaking those thoughts out of my head the door finally opened. Now let’s make sure my sister is up and off to the first floor for breakfast. Hey Tamari are you up yet? I don’t want to be late for school again because of you… Can you hear me in there?
Both of our places had a hallway that leads you into a large space with plenty of rooms. The last time I walked all the way in I was traumatized and I won’t let that happen again. I’m up… . I’m up,
she yelled finally and asked Are you wearing that? Why not something cuter that shows off your figure!
Bye Tamari, I’ll see you down stairs.
I was dressed in my favorite black hooded shirt and long pants that fit loosely. My hood was so big you could barely see my face just like I liked it. I also kept on a half mask just like in my favorite manga story. I didn’t want anyone to see my face or body and I even kept my hood on in school at all times.
My mom worked long hours, and she was rarely home because of all of her business trips so my sister and I looked after the house. I loved our home the best. It was set up more like an apartment building but from the outside it looked like a large family home. There were three floors and the top apartment was mine. My sister’s apartment was on the second floor and my mom’s was on the first floor. My sister and I both had three bedroom apartments with two and a half baths and our own master’s bedroom. We both had full kitchens with all the trimmings, so we didn’t have to leave our apartment, but we still ate together at moms place from time to time.
Morning sis
Tamari yelled as she walked through the door. Sup lil sis I’m glad to see that you’re up when I ask… . for once.
My sister is always full of life except for early in the morning. She is also very beautiful. She was a little taller than me about five feet nine inches with a milk chocolate complexion. She had long black hair that waved up anytime any moisture hit it and deep brown eyes. She was full figured with a thin waist and a great pair of legs. She had a smile with one deep dimple that could brighten any room, and she always had my back. What more could a big sis ask for?
Tamari where’s your other half?
I asked, as I grabbed the orange juice from the fridge. He’s upstairs getting dressed.
Mari was in a great long-term relationship with a fellow student who she had been dating for the last two years. Justin was a very tall young man 6’ 5 and 190lb’s to be exact. Mari liked them tall and strong with a good head on their shoulders and Justin fit those requirements to the fullest. He was caring, smart, and he knew his way around any vehicle. Justin spent more time here than he did at his own home.
Morning sis," Justin yelled when he walked into the kitchen as he gently kissed Mari on the lips. They were very happy and I was happy for them, but inside I longed for what they both shared. After we all finished eating, we jumped into Justin’s car and sped off to school.
Our college was diverse, and it had many good qualities. There were so many clubs you could join and a variety of sports teams as well. Oh by the way, if you were wondering Tamari and Justin are both 19 and a half and this is their junior year in college. I am 20 and a half and this is my senior year at school. I can’t wait to be done. My mom had us very close in age, and our father doesn’t really keep in touch but that is fine. Many children grow up without the other parent in today’s society.
We don’t know much about our dad other than the fact that he left our mom when we were young. Something about not being ready to have a family, but if you ask me he was in a little too deep by that point, but I guess that didn’t matter. After that he moved out, and that’s where that story ends. He sends my mom a huge check for us every month, and she
