About this ebook

Samuel, a young boy, is born around 1790. He becomes aware that his family is keeping a secret. His older brother Joshua knows what it is but won't tell him. Samuel believes that he can be trusted also. Joshua returns to the Quaker school, leaving more responsibility on Samuel. He begins to take on chores Joshua once did.
One dark night, Samuel awakens to Pal's barking. He peeks through a crack in the loft door; Pa brings strangers into their kitchen in tattered, dirty clothes. Would Pa explain all this to him in the morning?

    WHO IS OUT THERE?

Pal was a good watchdog. His barking kept foxes and weasels away from our chicken house. Before we got Pal, a weasel killed three chickens in one night. He didn’t eat even one. Pa said weasels were that way—mean-spirited critters. To Samuel’s ears, Pal’s bark had a special sound for people and another sound for critters. This bark was his people bark.
