About the Author
To believers and pastors all over the world who have not yet learned of or embraced their election by God. It is hoped that this book will bring them the peace, joy, and empowerment that comes from having this knowledge.
I gave in, and admitted that God was God.
—C. S. Lewis
Foreword
As a preacher of God’s Word and the pastor of a local church, I am occasionally reminded by my wife to take the cookie jar of Truth from the top shelf and put it on a lower shelf where everyone can reach it. In other words, if I am going to effectively minister to my church family from behind the pulpit, they must be able to understand what is being taught. If people go home from church impressed with their preacher’s biblical knowledge but have not grasped the basic principles of the passage that was preached, their lives will remain untransformed, and they will be hindered in their ability to grow in their personal relationship with their Creator.
This is especially true when a preacher, or in this case, an author, takes on a weighty subject, such as election and predestination. While some may be content to preach to the choir
of Bible college- and seminary-educated believers, I believe it takes a uniquely gifted individual, with both a passion for God’s Word and a strong commitment to discipleship, to tackle these complicated topics and to meticulously distill them down to a layman’s level—with the goal of helping those who are intimidated and overwhelmed by such deep doctrines to come to a clear understanding of what God’s Word teaches.
Charlie Burgess is such a man. Charlie is particularly qualified to author such a book because he is a layman himself who has no theological training and yet is a well-studied disciple of God’s Word who takes seriously the biblical admonition to rightly divide the word of truth.
Most importantly, Charlie has thoughtfully authored a book that is rich in biblical content because he believes Scripture can stand on its own merit and does not need human intervention to help it.
The end result is an extremely well-researched and well-organized book that explains the doctrine of election in a most understandable manner without sacrificing one ounce of biblical Truth. It is truly an easy and enjoyable read.
Those who sit in the pews, as well as those who stand behind the pulpit and sidestep the subject of election because of a lack of comprehension, will discover as they read this book that understanding election is not
