    Chapter One

There stood Hideki, a seventeen-year-old girl, in a forest. It was mid-January, and snow blanketed the ground. It was about twelve degrees outside, and she was lightly dressed; wearing only a blue tank top, blue shorts and blue sandals. She had short dark blue hair and light blue eyes. In her hands were a bow and three ice-tipped arrows ready to fire. Her target—a fully grown white-tailed buck—was in sight and in range as well, not even fifteen yards away. She aimed and pulled back on the arrows when she heard a low growl from behind her. She had a feeling that she was about to be attacked.

Hideki had a choice—to kill her target, and risk an attack by whatever was behind her, or to turn and kill the thing behind her, and risk her prize escaping. She took a brief second to think, and she made her decision. She released one arrow and spun around quickly, unsure if she had killed her target. She found herself face-to-face with a bear.

Hideki was surprised, not because bears are rarely seen in the forest she was in, but because of her stupidity. She could have—and should have—released all three arrows and made sure that she killed her prize, instead of saving two.

What a waste . . . said Hideki. She turned around to face the deer, but it was gone. Hideki was furious. She spun around; both arrows still nocked, and aimed at the bear. Before she could shoot, however, the bear raised its right claw and swiped at her. Hideki jumped backward, avoiding a slit throat by a hair.

She aimed again, but the bear swung again, Hideki dodging. She then aimed a third time, but she didn’t give the bear time to swing this time. She released the iced arrows, and the bear was struck in the head. It didn’t seem to notice the arrows, however, because it didn’t show any sign of pain. It just kept attacking.

Hideki mumbled to herself, Damn bears . . ., and she jumped up and kicked the bear’s head. It stumbled backward, giving Hideki the time to put her bow back into its quiver and draw a dagger from its sheath. The dagger was not a usual one. It had a gold blade with a diamond in the center, and an onyx handle with a sapphire in the center. Once she had the dagger in her hands, the bear was ready for another round. It was about to swipe, but Hideki thrust her dagger in its neck, instantly killing it. Once she knew that the bear was dead, she yanked the dagger out of the bear’s neck, wiped the blood off of the blade, and put it back in its sheath.

Hideki then ran over to the location of where the deer had been standing and she pulled out a flashlight. She shined it on the ground and saw drops of blood that created a trail, along with her iced arrow. She silently cursed to herself. She put her flashlight in her mouth, but kept its light on the blood trail. She jumped up, and at the same time she held her hands out, her palms facing the ground. Ice began to shoot from her hands, and her feet landed on it. She then moved her hands farther out in front of her, and the ice created a trail. Hideki began sliding on the ice trail, as if ice skating without skates. She followed the blood trail this way.

She found the buck after what seemed like a millennia. She stopped shooting ice from her hands and stopped sliding. When she landed on the ground, she quickly took the flashlight from her mouth and spat. Her mouth was numb, but that didn’t stop her. She advanced the deer slowly and quietly, and when she arrived at it she knelt down and felt its heart. There was no beat. She grinned.

She then pulled out the same dagger she used to kill the bear with and she skinned and gutted the buck. She tossed the bad meat, organs and skin away from her location, and she then held her hands out. Ice shot out, and she began moving her hands, allowing the ice to move. She created an ice chest out of ice. She put all the good meat in the ice chest, and then carried it to the entrance of forest. She scanned the area for her car—a cerulean-colored cobra with blue rims and a bright blue tint on each window. When she found it, she ran to the side and opened the door behind the driver’s door. She pulled out some rope, and she tied the ice chest to the top of her car. She then got in and started the car.

Hideki looked at the time. It was 2:41 a.m. She was late getting home. She usually gets home from hunting around 12:15 a.m. Thanks to the bear and the buck’s escape, Hideki had lost over two hours of sleeping time. She put the car in reverse, backed up, put it in drive, and sped off toward the mansion she lived in along with twenty-four other friends.

Each of Hideki’s friends had magnificent powers, like herself. But, like herself, everyone who lived at the mansion was also considered a freak in the eyes of many.

When Hideki returned home, she put the ice chest on her shoulder, unlocked the front door, and walked into the mansion. She walked to the kitchen and over to the walk-in freezer. She put the entire ice chest in the freezer. Next, she walked to the elevator and pushed the up button. She entered the elevator and pushed the 3 button, which was the floor that her room was on. The door closed and the elevator rose. When the door opened, she walked out and went to her room, which was between Reiku and Inori’s rooms. She walked into her room and then to her dresser. She took her sandals off, and replaced her tank top and shorts with a blue T-shirt and different blue shorts. She then got into her bed, and it took her only a minute to drift off to sleep at 3:07 a.m.

Hideki’s sleep did not last very long, however. She woke up at 4:00 a.m. to a distant roar. At 4:02 a.m., she heard another roar, but this one sounded closer. She got out of bed and went to her window. She looked outside and saw an unbelievable sight—a dragon. She couldn’t believe her bad luck. She had only killed one dragon in her life, which took her about an hour, and that was when she was wide awake and armed with weapons and her ice powers. She was exhausted, and had just used a lot of energy. She decided to wake her boyfriend, Reiku, and get his help. But there was one problem; this was a green dragon. Dragons come in a variety of colors, and they all have different immunities and breaths. What each dragon breathes and what each dragon is immune to depends on the color that it is. Hideki knew the immunities and breaths of all colors. Green dragons, unfortunately, are immune to fire and water, and breathe lightning. Reiku controls water. Inori wouldn’t be able to help her, because he controls fire. So Hideki ran out of her room and to the elevator. She pushed the up button, and when the door opened, she pushed the 4 button, which was the floor that Ellemaru, Daisuke, and Zekoshimimaru’s rooms were located.

Hideki heard another roar before she could get to Daisuke’s room, and this one was even closer. When she got to his room, she ran in and woke him up.

Daisuke was a sixteen-year-old boy, and the brother of Ellemaru and Zekoshimimaru. His left eye was purple, but his right was green. He had dark brown hair, and was an extremely talented puppeteer. He had a tattoo of the word poison on his left hand, and a tattoo of the word puppetry on his right hand. He has the power of poison.

    When Hideki woke him, Daisuke mumbled, . . . Hideki . . . what are you doing . . . ?

Panicking, Hideki said, I need you and your sister’s help.

    . . . Why?

Just help me get Ellemaru! Hideki said, and she ran out of the room.

Before he could get out of bed, Daisuke heard an extremely close roar. He was now wide awake. He cautiously got out of his bed, and went to the window. He looked outside and saw the dragon, which was approaching the mansion slowly. Daisuke now understood what Hideki was panicking about. He ran to his giant string puppet, and pulled it off the nail on the wall from which he keeps it hanging. He then ran out of his room and met Hideki and Ellemaru, who were already on their way back to his room. Ellemaru was carrying her giant fan.

Ellemaru was Daisuke and Zekoshimimaru’s seventeen-year-old sister. She had white and green hair, and her eyes were silver. She controls the wind. They didn’t wake Zekoshimimaru, because his temper gets out of control and he’ll kill you if you do.

Zekoshimimaru was the fifteen-year-old brother of Ellemaru and Daisuke. He had blood red hair, and his eyes were metallic scarlet. He had a tattoo of the word sand on his left forearm, the word death on his forehead, and the word Geichirou on his right forearm. He controls sand and is the youngest, yet strongest person who lives at the mansion.

The three ran to the elevator and went down to the first floor. They rushed out before the door could completely open, and they exited the mansion through the back door, which was where the dragon was advancing.

Ellemaru said, Dang. when she saw the dragon

    I told you! Hideki said.

They all got ready for a fight. Ellemaru jumped on her fan, which was still completely closed, and started gliding. She glided toward the dragon, keeping her distance, and shot a ball of wind from her right hand. She hit the dragon’s left wing. The dragon continued flying, not taking any damage, or even acknowledging the fact that it had been hit. Ellemaru jumped off of her fan, and a large cloud of wind caught her as she grabbed her fan. She had used her fly attack. She then used her curse of the fan attack.

Ellemaru said to Hideki and Daisuke who were watching and making sure the dragon didn’t get close to the mansion, It’s screwed!

    Hideki said, Good.

Ellemaru’s fan opened slightly and revealed a small blue circle; the first sign of the curse.

Ellemaru then heard a deep voice, one she did not recognize, saying, "Foolish girl. Your silly fan cannot defeat me. I am a legend! I can’t be defeated!" She realized that the dragon was the one speaking.

Ellemaru said in response, We’ll see. and she swung the fan. A blast of wind burst out and hit the dragon, but it still didn’t seem to take any damage at all.

    Ellemaru said, What the hell?

The dragon then said, I am becoming annoyed. I will kill you now. and it opened its mouth, shooting out a ball of lightning.

Ellemaru said, Dang! and she used her wind shield attack. She created a shield of wind and protected herself, barely. Her fan then opened up a little more, revealing a green square that was larger than the blue circle. This was the second sign of the curse.

Realizing that she had no other options, Ellemaru said, Daisuke! Help!

Daisuke pulled out his puppet. Its mouth opened, and shot out ten poisoned daggers, one after another. They all hit the dragon, but none could penetrate its scales. Ellemaru continued shielding herself from the dragon’s lightning attacks, stalling for time.

Daisuke shouted, Hey, ugly! Over here!

The dragon looked over to Daisuke, who was flipping it off.

The dragon chuckled before saying, This will be quick. and it flew toward Daisuke.

The dragon swung its tail at Daisuke, but he made his puppet grasp it with three of its four arms. The puppet then flipped the dragon off with its remaining arm, and shot another poisoned dagger from its mouth. The dagger was shot with such force and was so close to the dragon’s tail that it sank deep into its scales, drawing its blood.

Daisuke looked up at Ellemaru, who was giving him the thumbs up signal. Then, her fan opened up completely, revealing a large, red triangle, which was the last sign of the curse. The three shapes on her fan then began glowing and the dragon began struggling, which meant that the curse was working. Daisuke made his puppet release the dragon, and it fell down on the ground.

The dragon got up, and said, Stupid humans! I’ve had that curse attack used on me thousands of times! I know how it works, and it can’t kill me! You should know to never give your opponent a chance to attack! and it shot out another ball of lightning from its mouth, and this one hit Daisuke. He fell down and didn’t move.

Ellemaru shouted, No! and she used her tornado attack, creating a huge tornado. The tornado quickly approached the dragon.

The dragon said, It’s no use! and it breathed another ball of lightning. It hit the tornado, penetrating it.

Ellemaru said, Dang! She then started
