    To my loving parents,

    Acknowledgements

    From October 22, 2006, until April 27, 2009, I wrote this book. These are my thank-you’s.

    First, I want to thank my parents. You guys have been there for me through so much. You’ve always believed that I could reach my dreams, even if they’re sky-high. You always taught me to dream and to believe, and I’ll always be grateful for that. I don’t know how to thank you enough for all you’ve done. I love you and that will never, ever change.

    My friends have talked me down and made me laugh no matter what, and I just want to thank you guys for your support and love and everything you’ve done for me. Katie, please, put down the Pixy Sticks and back away slowly. You all are part of my family. Remember that and remember that I love you.

    Some words of advice to the people who pick up this book. Keep following your passion. Keep reading. Keep loving. Keep breathing… and always keep it real.

    Later Dayze.

    —Beth

    This could be the inspiration you need

    That on which your soul does feed;

    That one story that you will want to read over and again,

    The thing that shows you where you are,

    Where you are going, and where you have been;

    You might see yourself in a character or your home in a place on the map,

    A friend in Indigo, Reef, or the rulers of the land;

    Then suddenly, you are riding a unicorn by the rolling waves,

    You are exploring a secret cave;

    A magical experience unlike any other,

    Read it alone or with your brother;

    With your cat or dog,

    A dragon—though it’s really a toad, or is it a frog?

    Read it in a tree, nestled in its branches,

    Or huddled on its roots in the rain;

    Keep it for yourself

    Or give it to a friend in pain;

    This book is for all to enjoy,

    To love, either girl or boy;

    Fall in love, live life, and enjoy this story land,

    I hope you care about this book as I do.

    Hold it in your heart and hand.

    Love, Live, and Good Reading.

    PS:

    YOU HAVE BEEN FOREWARNED!

    Once Upon a Story…

    The moon will become dark, and the power of all will wax magnificent. All else shall indeed be as fleeting as the tide. A dragon and true love that shall never be shattered will be found.

    And the magic in the world will no longer be dark, but rather all will be saved by the Radiance of the Riders of Earth.

    Prologue

    Once, five princesses were gifted with the powers to rule five different dominions. These girls were so named

    Ziyae, who was given power and the gift of Sight;

    Kymlea, who was given the power of Water;

    Ishtar, who was given the power of Air;

    Jaelle, who was given the power of Flame;

    and Eiko, who was given the power of Earth.

    These five girls, forever changed, were entitled the Five Elements. They traveled through a portal into a void of space and time. They combined their powers and found a world, which was lingering on the edges of ours.

    This world was Eldasor. They ruled in peace over their land for many years, and each fell in love. Then disaster struck. A dark wizard kidnapped Eiko. She managed to escape back to earth after destroying the wizard. The remaining girls and the boys they loved, especially Eiko’s beloved, fiercely searched the universe for her until one by one, they each landed back in their domains on earth. They lived there for many years, grew older, and married the ones that they loved.

    Ziyae grew older and had three children just before her husband disappeared. No one but the five knew whether he died or just vanished. Indigo, the youngest, was taken by a portal at only eight years old. Celyn, Indigo’s twin in every way but age, was a storm-wraith, a shape-shifter with extreme powers. Aethelinda, the eldest, was unstable. A rumor started when she first took possession of Dark Magic that she was a faerie changeling child, not even really a human but rather from the faeries in place of Ziyae’s real daughter.

    Jaelle also grew older and had two children, both girls. They were named Caileigh Genevieve and Rosemary. A Mage School in Eldasor took Rose when she was born. Caileigh was left on the doorstep of the Castle of Air in the north just after birth. She was taken in by the royals there.

    Eiko had a daughter whom she named Daiyu. She was given to a portal after birth, and she lived as a thief on the streets.

    The five met once again and discovered that these children and several others of Eldasorian descent must never meet all at once until fourteen years of age. If more than three met at any given time, their powers would come out too soon, become uncontrollable and most likely fatal.

    Goodbye, my daughter. May this gift keep you safe from harm, Ziyae whispered as she clasped a necklace around Indigo’s neck. She then handed the child over to Queen Maeve of the Castle of Flame in the west. Eiko put the spell of protection over each of the children. Rose was taken straight to the Mage School. Caileigh was flown on dragon-back to the Castle of Air in the north. All the preparations were made, and the other children were made safe as well. The five left in tears from their homeland and, before their powers faded for many years, went to the place called Earth from whence they came so many years before.

    Chapter One

    The Introductions

    Indigo

    Indigo walked out onto the stone bridge. Rubble from the explosion she had been in rolled over the edge, off her feet. She put her hand to her head and felt blood. There was a deep gash on her forehead. She put a hand on her bag to reassure herself that its contents had not disappeared and that this was not all a dream.

    Ah, c’est la vie. That’s life, a voice behind her said. Indigo twisted around and whipped her sword out of its scabbard. "Now, now, my dear… you should really… chill!" the figure exclaimed as it puts its hands up.

    Before Indigo could even move, her sword was knocked out of her hands. She seized a dagger out of the belt around her hip and threw it at the woman. It struck.

    Her adversary walked out of the shadow. She was a twenty-five, maybe thirty-year-old woman with platinum blonde hair that came past her knees. She was wearing a grey trench coat and a sword at her hip. She had a hand on her shoulder, which she pulled away and showed to Indigo. It was red with blood.

    She snapped her fingers, and two young warriors emerged from both sides of the bridge. They clutched Indigo’s shoulders and forced her to her knees. The older woman pulled her sword out of its scabbard and clasped the hair of her hostage.

    She smirked and said to her captive, "I had hoped that you would pull off something better than this. Where are your friends? You’re all alone." Indigo tried to wrench her head away from the elder woman.

    She said with the utmost dignity, "I am never alone. While you worry about me and my trifling attack, an army is being massed." The witch dropped the locks of her detainee and flashed her sword in the moonlight. She struck out, but at that exact moment, Indigo used magic to pull her sword out of the ground. It flew to her hands as did her second blade out of its scabbard. She put them under her arms, points facing back. With one swift motion, she slashed the goons and flipped the blades in her hands. The two dropped to the ground, and Indigo used magic again, this time, to morph her two swords into one. She held it in her left hand and touched her left cheekbone. She winced. The gash on her face bled down her tanned skin. She swung at the sorceress and held her down with the blade.

    Indigo asked, Why did you not kill me? She flipped backward as her opponent kicked her with the heel of a boot.

    "I thought you could be a valuable ally. I was wrong!"

    Aethelinda charged Indigo. She flipped onto her stomach and summoned the sword she had dropped. She rolled onto her back and flicked her wrist to parry the oncoming attack away. She jumped onto her feet and dodged the immediate assault.

    The two women fought for what seemed like an eternity until finally, it seemed like Indigo had the upper edge. The girl had her sword at her rival’s neck. Aethelinda knocked the sword out of Indigo’s hands for less than a second, and that was all that she needed. She used a blast of power to knock Indigo over the bridge.

    The witch watched the girl drop. She whispered, Good-bye, my sister.

    As Indigo fell, she was able to get her sword back into the scabbard. She did not scream even when she was grabbed midair by a young man on a vine. He was wearing a tunic and breeches, but the most mysterious thing was the black cloth mask over his features.

    When they swung off the rope, he whispered, Don’t worry, I’m a friend. They dropped to the ground, his arms wrapped around her tenderly as they rolled. She reached up and, with one hand, untied the knot fastening his mask. She gasped as she saw that it was a friend whom she had thought was dead.

    Taran, oh… I thought you were dead! I saw Aethelinda kill you!

    He held her close and said, Don’t worry about anything… I’m here now, and the past is behind us. She trusted him, though he had a strange tone in his voice. Up on the bridge, the sorceress pitched a giant-sized fit, sending a blast of flame toward the couple. They were flung several feet.

    Taran! she exclaimed. He ran up to her and helped her up.

    He asked, Are you all right? When she nodded, he kissed her on the lips, grabbed her hand, and started to run north.

    Indigo lived in a place called Wales, with Taran, a friend of hers. Indigo was starting to loathe the country that had sheltered her for almost seven years. Her homeland was not Wales. She was just there. She had come there when she was young, and she missed her homeland desperately.

    She had blown up the castle, and what she had said about the army was true. There were friends of Indigo who were massing secretly.

    When they had ran for what felt like a time without end, she dropped to the ground. Indigo looked around and saw that they were no longer in the dense marsh they had been inside just minutes before. She could still see the smoldering ruins of her adversary’s castle. She had succeeded in her mission: to break into the castle and blow it up. This was no mere rebel’s task though, for she was no mere rebel. She was Princess Indigo.

    She had to destroy the castle that the evil sorceress had built in the western outskirts of this land.

    As the girl looked over her shoulder, she saw that Taran was standing on a hill. She walked over to him and gasped. The witch of the castle was there, on the other side, talking to Taran. He turned around and saw Indigo watching them with a betrayed look on her face.

    You, you… you cowardly, arrogant… You traitor! How could you? I thought you loved me, and you betray me to her! He walked up to her, and she punched him in the face. She started to run.

    With a flick of her hand, the witch created sand-warriors and, worse, summoned a storm-wraith. A tiger, with eyes the color of blackest coal, was his current form. The storm-wraith morphed into a human, which was its rightful form. Celyn. Of course, it would be you, the double agent that you are. Indigo was gasping for air. He walked to her and brushed his hand across her face. She flinched.

    Now, now, darling, you’ll be thanking me soon, he said. She spun around and pulled her sword out of the scabbard. She glanced over to Celyn. He laughed and transfigured into a cobra. She screamed in fury and slashed toward his side. He easily dodged the blows, which would have been fatal if he had not.

    Meanwhile, Taran was watching Aethelinda shriek in
